A Brewers bottom line question
Right before the playoffs there was talk in some quarters that if the Brewers did not make the playoffs they would come up about 10 million short.
Since they made the playoffs how did that effect getting back to even or even into the black?
I know they said when they got CC it might put them into the red but does hitting 3 million in attendence and making the playoffs counter that.
Not looking forward must wondering if they lost money this year.

I believe it was posted earlier here
That the players and umps get the majority of money from the first three games in a 5 game series, with the clubs splitting the gate from any games after that. So the Crew would have picked up another $1 mil from the gate plus parking, concessions and their share of TV revenue. I’m not sure if they get a bigger share of TV because they were playing or if its split evenly amongst all MLB teams.
Increased season ticket sales for next year would be considered revenue this year, and would go towards profit this year, so it is possible that they could have an accounting profit this year but those advance sales eat into the operating profit next year.

My understanding of accounting would have 2009 season ticket pre-sales count as income for next year because that is when the service (baseball) will be delivered and because you are only placing a deposit on the package and not buying the package.
Another way to think of it is like the NFL salary cap. Signing bonus are paid the day the contracts are signed, but for cap purposes, its cost is divided equally throughout the term of the contract.

This is true
Any cash brought in for ticket sales for next year is actually a liability on the books as unearned revenue. Do the brewers actually announce their profit/loss at the end of they year. I am really interested to see just how this year’s money situation played out.

They gave a brief overview last year…. but nothing like they would do if they were a publicly traded company

If 2009 sales are indeed recorded as “unearned revenue,” they would have no affect on the 2008 income statement — unless somehow part of it has been earned in the current year. Then adjusting entries would be made and it may be difficult to discern what revenue comes from where. I have no idea how MLB teams account for things, but hopefully my $80,000+ education has taught me something.
