Torres Retiring
Per TH - Torres is saying goodbye... hopefully it is like the Brett Favre deal and he will want to unretire before pitchers and catchers report.

Can they pick up his option anyway just so that they have control of him should he pull a Favre?

Ben Sheets for closer!
(just kidding)

IF...
he came back to Milwaukee at the right price… I would welcome him with open arms.
The right price being 3/30…

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
(sorry. dont want him back at any price…)
:)
I'm ok with a cheap deal too...
But my ideal is more like 2/20 with an option for a third at 12.
I don't specifically articulate my motives, because that wouldn't travel as well as a boo does.
My ideal is close to yours.
I would keep it at two years and an (team) option for a third year at a set price. But I would lower the salary for the first two years to $6-8 million with incentive bonuses for innings pitched/games pitched that could escalate it as high as even $15 million
Eric Gagne DL time: May 23-June 29 Brewers record in that span: 20-9
what do I know
but I’d guess he gets something like 3/45 on the open market. If he were signed to a one year deal, he might do it thinking he’ll make money in the long run by bumping up the years and rate.
I’d guess something like 10 million with an option for a second at 20. I hear some negative tones from people like McCalvy and Haudricourt when they talk about him coming back though and they actually talk to Melvin and others in the Brewers.
I'm sure that that is what he will actually get.
I was just saying what I would be willing to pay him. 3/45 for the Brewers on a player with huge injury problems is too risky; there would have to be a lower salary and high incentives for me to be happy with him coming back, though I’m sure that is very very unlikely.

I'd like to see 1/10
Even though it is the prevailing wisdom, I’m not sure he has huge injury problems. I would think the inner ear thing pushed him beyond the norm for pitchers, but how much worse is he than average?
He really hasn’t had a major injury. For a pitcher with his service time, I wonder how frequently that happens.
This is all part of Torres’ master plan to be traded to the Twins or Cubs, isn’t it? Don’t give in Doug, don’t do it.

Ugh
I’d like to advocate McClung for McCloser, but I think Villy is a better option. CV has better K rates than Clung and far less walks. I think the more dominating stuff of McClung is better in a multiple-inning role, whether as a starter or a dominant long-term relieving/setup role (not to be confused with “long reliever”)like he was late last year. He’s been tried as a 1 inning guy in Tampa and it didn’t work out so well. CV, on the other hand, has shown he can get strikeouts like an elite relief pitcher and has a propensity to be consistent and find ways out of jams instead of imploding.

Speaking of McClung – Is he worth locking up for a few years? If I am reading Cots right, he is in his last year of arbitration. If I am reading it wrong – he this is his second to last year…

Add one year to the service time shown on Cot's
So McClung is currently at 4 years, 111 days. That means he’ll still be eligible for arbitration after 2009.

Right.
Plus he was traded for Grant Balfour, who is awesome now.
Are we 100% sure Torres would have closed, even if he came back? He wasn’t exactly dominant enough to demand another season in the role.
I don't specifically articulate my motives, because that wouldn't travel as well as a boo does.
As the roster stands now.
I’m 95% sure Torres would have closed. There isn’t anybody else that I think management would be comfortable with closing. Nobody else really has experience closing.
Though I hear this guy, who’s formerly had success closing, is going to be a free-agent this winter:

Hmm
If a player leaves the organization and comes back, can he get a second bobblehead promotion?

Oh, I do too
I’m just not sure “CLOSER” is the best use of his skills. I, for one, would like to see if he could put up a low 4 ERA in the rotation. If he’s not a starter, I think it would be awesome to have two bullpen aces— Carlos and Seth— who can go multiple innings. I think it’d be kinda foolish to pencil him into only pitching with a 3 run lead or less in the ninth inning. It’d be cool to get a guy like Hoffman for that— like we were trying to do with Gagne last year, except he sucked beyond epic proportions.

Ooo, Hoffman would be nice.
Didn’t he only make something like $7 million last year? That’s three million dollars less than our tubby french-canadian friend.

It's been officially confirmed now that Hoffman will not be back with the Padres
and it doesn’t sound like he wants to retire. I think $7 mil would do it.

Remember when Riske was going to be the backup closer?
Let him be the guy that’s only used in three-run lead situations.

The way our roster looks, it seems as though some AAA guys are going to be up next season.
Looks like we can finally look forward to some Luis Pena time.

Right now
This is all a projection, mind you:
Shouse
Riske
DiFelice
Dillard
McClung
Stetter
Villanueva
Assumptions: McClung isn’t in the rotation, which features Gallardo, Parra, Bush, Suppan and (acquisition or Capuano). Shouse re-signs, but Sheets, Sabathia, Torres, Gagne, Mota and Todd Coffey do not.
If all that happens, the roster already has 12 pitchers without Luis Pena. It’s not a great 12, but it’s 12, so there’s not really a mad dash to find 4 more guys, just one or two who can improve it.
I don't specifically articulate my motives, because that wouldn't travel as well as a boo does.
I don't think Capuano will be back.
Also; ick.
Some of those guys did well in short stints in the majors, but I bet that a full season would show a not-so-good side. Personally, I think it is pretty necessary to get two good relief pitchers to help. Especially if Shouse leaves.

Assuming Coffey won't be offered a contract?
If the team wants to keep him around, he’s arbitration-eligible.

You can do worse
There isn’t a really crappy guy in the bunch. Should be able to find a couple hot hands in there.

That's an 80 loss staff if I've ever seen one.
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

Omar Aguilar
I really think he could make a marmol (2007)-esque second half impact. trusting his stuff and throwing strikes is the most important thing for him, I feel.
Screw second half
A good spring training and a couple of solid AAA outings and he’s up in April or May, I think.
And neck size to baby eating ratio.
I agree
How about a late-May callup so he’s not a super 2?
and...
Rob Wooten could move quickly too. Lots of college relievers do, and he had outstanding numbers last year
MLB closer
just because he’d come in, the lights would flash, his song would play, and the crowd would go WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT

heard on the radio this morning
that Torres is a Jehovah’s Witness. I wonder if he’s retiring so he can go door to door and torture people.
Hey
Isn’t there a team out there that needs a bullpen coach?

We picked up his option
in case he changes his mind, but we don’t have to pay him or keep him on the 40-man roster.
