Yankees' initial offer to Sabathia: $140-142 million
It's actually less than I expected, but still about 40% more than the Brewers have offered. (h/t Crawfish Boxes)
Also, it's possible CC Sabathia loves everyone. Apparently he's also friends with Nick Swisher.

Maybe the extra $8-10 million is being set aside to acquire more Sabathiacquaintances
Either way, I heard CC can’t stand Wilson Betemit, Jeff Marquez, or Jhonny Nunez. Brilliant!

Funny...
I just became really angry for some reason, hmm.

The thing is
The $140 million is for one year.

Thanks for the hat tip
And I wouldn’t worry too much about the Yankees offer being lower than you expected: it’s just day one of free agency, it’ll rise to even more ludicrously insane levels.
Hopefully Prince Fielder and he had excellent philosophic discussions on the virtue of vegetarianism and he doesn’t want to leave until he gets Prince back on the meat.
The Crawfishboxes
A good friend of mine used to say, "This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

It's about 15% more than the Brewer's offer
$23 mil/ yr vs 20 mil/yr, assuming that the Yankees offer is a 6 year deal like Santana’s. The Brewer’s may be able to close the deal by adding a year at $35 mil or so to the contract but giving CC an out after 3 years so he can go home to Cali. The total is close enough to the Yankees offer that the union won’t be pissed, but everyone knows that there is really no intention of those last years being paid out. They just form the basis of the next round of negotiations.
Then you just pray that he doesn’t get hurt.

Key phrase indeed. I think that risk makes even the (reported) $100 M offer foolish. Granted, CC hasn’t shown any injury propensity in the past, but putting yourself out there like that is kinda like asking Murphy to come knocking at your door, isn’t it?
It's called "playing the percentages."

The Team needs to make a new offer
CC can be had, and he needs to be had.

That’s Old Brewer Loser Talk.
Its time to make a big-boy move, and show people that the organization is serious about being in the business of winning.

Is that what it's time for?
It’s not like we’re using Monopoly money here. Unless you personally want to use your untold millions to bring CC back into the fold, you have to keep an eye on what you can afford.
The Yankees payroll is, what, $250 million this season? I believe I read that they’re purging $80 million off the books for 2009. $80 million! That’s, like, our entire payroll, just about.
I’d love to see CC back as much as anyone, and I’m fine if we make a new offer - preferably with a 6th year. But if we end up in a bidding war with the Yankees, we lose - even if he signs with us, we lose, because it’ll be for $25-30 million a season.

I’m just bitter, because I think the 1st offer was good enough.

Yeah, me too
I think he’ll only be 32 when a 5-year deal expires too - barring injury, there’s a good chance he’d be in line for another $100 million payday.
C’mon, CC! Think about all the good times you had here in Milwaukee!

I'm pretty sure
I saw Kendall in the supermarket the other day wearing the same exact thing. Hell, I bet he sleeps in that gear.
Congrats 08 Crew on a fine Wild Card achievement! What do you say we keep the next postseason drought to something a little shorter than a quarter of a Century.

CC taking the weekend to think about Yank offer
“a person familiar with the lefthander’s thinking said.”
Familiar with his thinking? And Peavy’s agent is trying to juice his contract to come to NY. What a soap opera. Just go there Jake.

1980s Yanks all over again?
All the free agents in the world couldn’t help them then and I don’t think they’ll help now. Of course, now that Darrell Rasner saw the writing reading “no fifth starter spot for you” and went to Japan, they’ll need something because they couldn’t have done it without him this year (gulp.)
Wasn’t the main issue with the Yankees this year injuries, anyway?
