Hmm
That article is from Wednesday. The JS yesterday said the team was still prepping their offer and that it’d be closer to $100 million for five years.

"expectation"
He phrased it thusly:
“The expectation in some baseball circles…”

$25 million/year
might do it, but I’m thinking CC will ask for 5 or 6 years.

If Johan is worth 20mil a season for 7 years… why can’t we offer CC something that… Starting around 17 mil a season for 09 and going up from there and for 7 years??

Because the Yankees would double it. :)

I think the Yankees will offer more regardless
It’ll be about CC’s motives. 4, 100 is a quality offer and he might take it. He’ll probably get 6, 150 from NY- nothing we can do about that.

Ok – I suck at asking questions…
Why are we stuck on 4 years? Why not stretch it out to 6-7 years and the $20 mil ave the Johan got? Is it because of the cardinal rule to never give a pitcher more than a 4 year contract?

Its probably just because it is less of a risk.
Four years wouldn’t be quite as crippling as seven years to a franchise.
It also might have to do with how other contracts match up. The team needs to be able to afford arbitration and contract extensions for the other 24 players on the team.

Right
It’s sad to admit it, but at some point, CC is suddenly going to suck - or in Suppan’s case, not so suddenly.
It’s like a game of Hot Potato: you don’t want to be the team holding the big long-term contract when he’s no good.

No – but we could keep him for the first 3 years and then off him to the Yankees and let him pull a Carl Pavano on them…
