Mike Maddux Joins the Rangers
The Dallas Morning News' Texas Rangers Blog reports:
"The Rangers will name Mike Maddux pitching coach perhaps as early as Monday, a source with knowledge of the process said Sunday night.
[snip]
UPDATE: Brewers GM Doug Melvin is confirming that Maddux is coming to the Rangers. Melvin told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel that the Rangers "overwhelmed" Maddux with a multi-year deal."
Good luck in Arlington, Mike, and thanks for your years in Milwaukee. Feel free to take one of your erstwhile model students along with you.

Well, at least he'll be back in a few years.
When the contract expires, he will be a former-ranger.
Paging Mr. Melvin….Mr. Melvin, please…

Dick Bosman, welcome to Milwaukee
Born in Kenosha and the Rangers pitching coach during most of Melvin’s tenure there? With that background, I don’t think Melvin would even have to interview him.
It just gets better:
A highly competitive control pitcher who told teammates, “If you don’t hustle when I’m pitching, I’ll kick your ass,” Bosman was 14-9 with an AL-best 2.19 ERA for the 1969 Senators. He won a career-high 16 in 1970, and on July 19, 1974, no-hit the A’s while with Cleveland, losing a perfect game on his own throwing error.
Perfect.

Losing a perfect game on his own error?
Gritty.

how do you pitch a no-hitter with no walks
but have your error be a throwing error?

Wouldn't say I'm happy....
But I’m not all that disappointed either.

what kind of news is this? it's kind of crap!
Coming to an AL ballpark near you in 2009, Mike Maddux and Gerald Laird starring in “It Came From the Depths of the PCL.” Co-starring the entire Texas Rangers pitching staff (all 30+ of them, if 2008 was any indication!)
In less jocular news, good luck to Mr Maddux in Arlington—he’s going to severely need it.

the exodus continues...
I’d argue that Maddux had more to do with the Brewers success over the last 2 years than Yost did. The decomposition of Turnbow and Capuano this year may have made some people forget that Maddux was able to turn them into AllStars.
I would’ve taken Sveum+Maddux over Macha+anyone else. Good luck in Texas Mike, I wish you the best.

Yeah, but
Maddux was still in charge when they fell apart, too. But yeah, we had pretty decent pitching during Maddux’s tenure - I’m not sure what to expect when he’s not here. Guess we’ll find out soon enough.

I'm going to miss the mound 'stache talks
I guess we will find out soon enough how much of the success we can credit to him. I wish him luck in Texas.
Congrats 08 Crew on a fine Wild Card achievement! What do you say we keep the next postseason drought to something a little shorter than a quarter of a Century.

I will NOT miss
that goofy jog to the mound.

I never understood what the hurry was
If you’ve got a pitcher struggling take all the time in the world to get to the mound, crawl if they’ll let you. Instead Maddox acted like if he didn’t get back to the dugout quick enough someone was gonna steal his seat. Or he was afraid Counsell would try to branch out from in game tactical decisions.

Hopefully Mazzone doesn’t share Bobby Cox’s feelings about Ned Yost’s dismissal

Does anyone else think this was handled strangely?
The team refused to let Maddux talk to the Rangers until his contract expired. Did they suspect their offer was below what Maddux could get elsewhere and they wanted to try and keep him from that fact?

there's really no way
to determine if Maddux was in fact a “good” pitching coach. All we have is mixed anecdotal evidence: if he gets credit for Turnbow, does he take the blame for Turnbow’s collapse? He didn’t master Grant Balfour (in a very limited timeframe)—does that mean he wasn’t good? Capuano and Bush showed both promise and inconsistency—which way does that cut?
The reality is that there is simply no way to directly evaluate a “good” pitching coach. A change in pitching coaches is small beer. Even the vaunted Mazzone couldn’t replicate success in Baltimore.
All things considered, I’m rather pleased with the greater likelihood created by Maddux’s departure that the dugout next season won’t just be Macha with all of the same old staff from the past.

Whoops!
Mike, maybe next time you’ll read the Texas Rangers contract a little more carefully.

Over at Lonestarball there is a thread about the hiring with some good research.
It seems like I read several times that Macha was good with young pitchers and the guy seems to know lots of people in baseball, so I assume he’s got some good ideas and will hopefully get someone he gels with.

IMHO – Maddux excelled in taking scrap heap pitchers and making them servicable and average to slightly above average. What he did not excel in was taking average pitchers and making them better.
I tend to agree with Supertramp… I am not happy about the departure… but I aint exactly depressed to the point that I am going to drink a bottle of scotch over it either.

Interesting
the Rangers have some nice pitching in their minor league system so he will have a lot to work with

Why not sign the Professor?
Go from one Maddux to another? Mike to Greg?

Just because Greg can pitch doesn’t mean that he can teach/coach…. just ask Rod Carew
