Brewers sign somebody!
Remember when I said today was a slow news day? I take it all back.
Tom H. reports that the Brewers just signed R.J. Swindle to a major league contract. Pay no attention to his MLB career .409 BAA (OK, in fewer than 5 major league innings) --- Swindle is bound to be a fan favorite from the get-go:
- He has a 55 MPH curveball. Mr. Slowy?
- In the minors, thanks to Mr. Slowy, he averaged 10.4 Ks/9 innings, with a career 1.58 ERA.
- His last name is a great name for puns. Say, do you think his first name is Rob?
- He's a former Phillie drafted by the Red Sox. Winners of the last two World Series? Phillies and Red Sox. Ergo, this guy's a winner.
- He's from ...you guessed it...Canada.
Be sure to give him a big BCB welcome the next time you see him.

tells of two recent promotions in scouting:
Doug Renolds was named East Coast crosschecker and Corey Rodriguez West Coast crosschecker. Rodriguez replaces Bruce Seid, who was promoted to amateur scouting director after Jack Zduriencik left to become Seattle’s general manager.
Reyonolds replaces Tom McNamara, who joined Zduriencik in Seattle.

I'm confused
He’s never played for Texas?
I wonder if this means the Brian Shouse era in Milwaukee is over. With Swindle and Stetter (presumably) on the roster, there’s not much room left for Shouse.
I’m assuming you already know the answer to the question in your third bullet point is yes.

OK, I'm actually excited about this.
Read this, which I remember reading on Beyond the Boxscore (note F.A.T. means Free Available Talent, not that Swindle is obese). I feel like Moneyball— nobody likes him because he doesn’t throw hard. Hope he gets a shot at the roster.

Swindle’s style is somewhat similar to Shouse’s despite their differing statures (Shouse is listed at 5-foot-10 and 196 pounds; Swindle at 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds). Swindle throws a variety of pitches from different arm angles, including a 55-mph curveball. His fastball tops out in the 84-85-mph range.
Swindle is believed to have agreed to a split contract that pays the Major League minimum salary — $400,000 in 2009 — if he remains in the big leagues. He has two Minor League options remaining.

“Wrights’ homer” is of a Rob Swindle 55 mph curveball
“Swindle’s first strikeout” is on a pretty sick slider

The home run pitch
was clearly zipping along at 65 mph. He needs to throw that bad boy a little softer.

Maybe that wasn't the awesome-curve then?
Hmmm. Aborted slider? If so, I can’t wait to see the curve if it’s 10 mph slower.

I wonder
Do you think he warms up in the bullpen by playing horseshoes? Lawn darts maybe?

Ex-Atlantic League pitcher with certain specialties who pitches slowly? Don’t the Brewers already have this guy?
Wait, DiFelice is a righty…never mind.

In the aformentioned David Wright home run,
is it just me or does his delivery look exactly like Mitch Stetter’s?

This signing was a necessity.
With R.A. Dickey and C.C. (or, CC nowadays) Sabathia gone, we needed another initials guy to keep J.J. happy.
