Tuesday's Frosty Mug
The Brewers actually delivered their formal offer to CC Sabathia yesterday. Ed Valentine who writes about the Yankees for Bugs & Cranks, thinks Sabathia is worth about 6 years, $150 million to the Yankees. That strikes me as about right. Rowland's Office thinks the Braves could sign free agency's best pitcher...but it's Japanese starter Junichi Tazawa, not Sabathia.
MLB Trade Rumors has predicted where the top 50 free agents will end up. He's got CC Sabathia as a Yankee, Ben Sheets as a Brave and Ray Durham as a Diamondback. Perhaps more interestingly, he has Brian Fuentes and Jon Garland as Brewers. Crawfish Boxes says Sheets could rejoin Mike Maddux in Texas.
On the trade front: Buried in this story on Mike Cameron's return, Doug Melvin said he's not talking with the Padres about Jake Peavy. Melvin says he was unwilling to give up young pitching, but it's also possible Peavy would have rejected a trade to Milwaukee, as he appears to have listed seven teams he's willing to play for in 2009.
Here's a deal that would turn some heads: Infield Chatter proposes a three-team deal for the Brewers, Tigers and Rays with the Brewers sending J.J. Hardy to the Tigers and getting Rays SP Andy Sonnanstine and minor leaguer Jeremy Hellickson. The Tigers may be looking to cut payroll.
Meanwhile, Ken Rosenthal says the Brewers likely will not move Prince Fielder this offseason and Rick Peterson does not appear to be a candidate for the pitching coach position, which will likely be filled by bullpen coach Bill Castro.
Craig Counsell and Guillermo Mota filed for free agency Monday, joining Francisco Rodriguez, as well as Rafael Furcal, Omar Vizquel, Edgar Renteria, Brandon Lyon, Paul Byrd, former Rays Cliff Floyd and Trever Miller and Reds Corey Patterson, Paul Bako and David Weathers.
One free agent may not be available after all: Scott Boras, who represents Greg Maddux, said Maddux is leaning towards retirement. Maddux has 355 career wins, eighth most all time. If he pitched in 2009 and won ten games, he'd move all the way up to fifth.
The coaching carousel has some names you'll recognize on it this morning: Bleeding Blue and Teal has a list of potential candidates to manage the Mariners, including Ned Yost, Willie Randolph, Bob Brenly and Ted Simmons. If Randolph interviews, it will be his second interview with Zduriencik, who was part of Randolph's interview in Milwaukee. And as for Ted Simmons, he won't sit home even if he doesn't get the Seattle job: he and former Brewer manager Jim Lefebvre recently joined the Padres coaching staff.
Oh, and be careful with #3 pencils.
Drink up. And go vote!

more Sabathia-related blather
via the Boston Globe’s Extra Bases blog:
Milwaukee GM Doug Melvin said by making Sabathia an offer “we just wanted to make sure he knew how much we appreciated what he did for us and how much we’d love to have him back.” Melvin doesn’t know where the offer will lead, but he said it was a one-time offer made by owner Mark Attanasio to retain a top-echelon player and that nobody should think if they don’t land Sabathia that the money earmarked for Sabathia would go toward another free agent. “This is a special case,” said Melvin. “We won’t do this for anyone else.”
Notice he didn’t mention Sheets? (Or Nick Cafardo didn’t ask, either way.)

Really? That trade idea intrigues me, actually.
If anything, it’s a lot better than the trades with Fielder where Hardy is added as a throw-in player. Screw that. If anything, he deserves his own blockbuster trade like this one.

FUentes
You mean we can get him even without trading a team of Laportas?

Well done…ha ha.
If the Brewers sign him, I will go to great lengths to get a FUentes jersey.

infield chatter
Another offer for a middle of the rotation soft tosser. The last one I read suggested Bronson Arroyo. Gak is my PG opinion.
And why doesn’t the guy allow comments without joining things?

more of what's said elsewhere sort of
They’re shopping Khalil Greene but the market price for SSs isn’t set yet. Not directly related to JJ but that’s what came to mind. I wonder what Greene will net, especially with the bad year.
“The Padres’ hiring of bench coach Ted Simmons and hitting coach Jim Lefebvre, announced by the club yesterday, gives fire to manager Bud Black’s ice. Black is energetic but not externally fiery; Simmons and Lefebvre have more combustible personalities.” I called him Yoda although that nickname never caught on. What were some others? I can’t recall. About the only time I saw the guy with anything that looked like an elevated pulse rate was when he was jawing with Ned and that wasn’t often. Trenni once referred to him as not connected to the players and talked about how he would sit by himself in a busy clubhouse and do crossword puzzles. He was with the Padres organization though. But fiery?
“The GM [Towers] added that he doubts Peavy would approve a trade to the Red Sox, who have the financial might and young talent to make a compelling offer. The Brewers have young talent to offer the Padres, but Towers said he doubts Peavy would OK a trade to Milwaukee.”
But he’d go to the Cubs? I wonder how much having a national network, WGN, that carries games creates a positive profile of the team.

Why would he rather pitch in SD than Milwaukee, but OK Chicago?
I’m not really interested in Peavy, but what’s the deal with that?
And neck size to baby eating ratio.

Milwaukee and Wisconsin have never been a place players were thrilled to go to.
In any of the pro sports here. Richard Jefferson was moody about being traded to the Bucks, nobody wanted to go to the Packers until Reggie White (And Charles Woodson still is only here because he didn’t get offers anywhere else.
Players that come here eventually warm up to it and enjoy it, like Woodson has, but beforehand it does not seem like an appealing city to them. Too small, not enough night life, not enough TV coverage, whatever.
Chicago, though, is a big city, has one of the most (blech) liked teams in the league, and a huge amount of TV coverage, not too mention gobs more money than the Brewers have.

Torres
So if the Brewers had a couple days to decide on Cameron’s option, do they have the same time frame for Torres’s option? I would assume they will pick it up, but I haven’t heard anything, or missed that news.
Congrats 08 Crew on a fine Wild Card achievement! What do you say we keep the next postseason drought to something a little shorter than a quarter of a Century.

More Torres
I’m interested in hearing more about what’s going on with him too.

hey its Brewers classics on TV here in Milwaukee
Sheets versus Lowe in early April 07. Estrada is in decent shape. Fielder is way lighter. Nick Leyva is out there rather than in Venezuela and Rickie is fast.
I know I’m in the minority, but I hope Sheets injury history means he comes back on a short contract.

If it is a short, cheap contract with a ton of performance bonuses.
I’m with you.

I was watching that game last night too…
Sheets pitched lights out… everyone hit the ball….
I also liked watching Lowe pitch… he wouldn’t be a bad pitcher to bring in for a couple of years…

Also watching that game… can we through Bill Schroeder in on any trades we do this year…
Bill Schroeder and Hall for a 6 pack and some wings…

How do people feel about
AJ Burnett? He’s opting out. Too ’spensive?
Lordz Of Vengeance....If I'm not drunk, I'm at work.
I am also pro-Rodgers.

Probably.
The only pitcher on the market I would want for over 10 million is CC. Maybe Lowe, if the contract is short (he is getting old). Burnett would be nice, but in his case I think I would rather spend the money on other improvements.

He’s opting out of 2 years which would pay 24 million, so the price in North of there so to speak. He’s had his own injury history and pitched a high number of innings last season and he’s not as big a guy as CC needless to say.
by ol Pete on Nov 4, 2008 8:30 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Might as well just go for Sheets.
2 and $24 might get him, and that’s what Burnett turned down.
