NL Gold Glove Winners
No Brewers make the Gold Glove team.
National League
P, Greg Maddux, LAD
C, Yadier Molina, STL
1B, Adrian Gonzalez, SD
2B, Brandon Phillips, CIN
3B, David Wright, NYM
SS, Jimmy Rollins, PHI
OF, Carlos Beltran, NYM
OF, Nate McLouth, PIT
OF, Shane Victorino, PHI
Nate... McClouth? We all know this is an exercise in stupidity because the writers who vote have no clue what they're talking about, but McClouth is a terrible defender. Sky Kalkman/Justin Inaz's ratings had him at 45 off, -14 def, 32 tot. He might be the worst defensive CF in the majors.
That's not the only bad pick. Pujols is pretty clearly better than Gonzalez, and Brandon Phillips is not anywhere near Chase Utley, who some stats think had the best year of a second basemen in quite a few years.

That's what a good throw in the All-Star Game will get you

I don't know
Is he a terrible defender? I still haven’t seen a criticism of his play. I think its because most people have never seen him play including Rob Neyer.

Is he a great defender?
Top 3 among NL outfielders? Does it matter? I’m just saying that having a good play in the All-Star Game might have made his name stand out a little more when it came to voting.

You could argue that he only made one error, but Cameron only made one error too.
Plus the aforementioned -14 fielding in the plus/minus rating. Sky Kalkman thinks he should play a corner.
And neck size to baby eating ratio.

what do you conclude from the RZR?
And Sky Kalkman probably has never seen him play. Seriously, there are some fun, interesting, informative conversations over at BYB, but that doesn’t mean using esoteric calculations can run a MLB franchise as GM and manager like those guys believe. When Neyer makes the claim that NL managers and coaches are fools and ignorant the only response over there is snickering, sarcasm and condescension.
McLouth had more out of zone plays per inning than Carlos Beltran. He had slightly fewer than Cameron. I doubt he has many balls clanking off his glove given the official scorer there, so how would those numbers be reconciled. He’s one of the best, comparable to Mike Cameron in getting to OOZ but somehow he lacks range? At worst that should raise question to the results.
Why the relatively low rate of BIZ? There are lot of possibilities, but off the top of my head two are the camera angles and magnifications and defensive shifts. There is also a significant chance that the two people doing the measurement based on watching video that produce the raw data share the same biases (and I mean systemic not a prejudice).
His raw numbers look really good. I know its the most un-PC thing to say, but maybe the people shooting off their mouth should try the scientific method and look at the calculations when the observed results seem contradictory. I don’t think that’ll happen because many of the people who claim superior knowledge and equate “science” with making mathematical computations don’t view observation as reliable or sometimes even valid.

Have you watched him?
Maybe he’s not the worst in the MLB like those numbers say, but he’s certainly not that good. I don’t think he’s too solid, and I watched him at least 10 times this year. There are obviously better choices for gold glove.
If Nate McC hit .260/.320/.400 this year, think he would have one? I’m just saying this award is a joke and shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

What doesn't he do well?
And he didn’t hit much better than that. Braun hit better than that and has good raw numbers.
Again, high number of OOZ, not dropping balls in his zone (that’s a presumption), yet somehow doesn’t get to balls hit closer to him… what hypothetical would explain that?
