Brewers Offseason Plans
As many of us are, i am anxiously waiting for this winter activity to start rolling. Arguably the most interesting time of year for alot of fans, November/December gets my juices flowing as well. Then i put myself in the position of Brewers GM and make decisions based on what i think is best for my team. But this offseason, it is hard for me to make decisions on who stays, goes, and comes in. The Brewers are now considered 'contenders' and not just building for the future. This in turn brings up issues for a medium-sized market team in the midst of contracts exceeding $150,000,000 on the market. If a team like the Brewers offer a contract of this monstrosity, then we have little money left over for other needs that may need to be addressed. Arguably the best pitcher in the game, who the brewers had for the last cpl months of the '08 season, will require this kind of money to be had. I love CC as much as the next guy, and i know the marketing revenue he will bring in will be huge, but me, as the GM of the mid-sized market Milwaukee Brewers, does not want to be the guy who gives this kind of money to one player.
The Brewers have holes to fill, and if we throw all of our eggs into one basket, we will go into the season with holes that are glaring in need of talent. So i want this post to be a place to discuss the options that the GM has this offseason.
In my opinion: Pitching staff
1. CC goes 2. We offer sheets arbitration, only one year is worth the risk 3. Forget all about guys like Burnett and Lowe. 4. I was going to talk about offering Mike Hampton a 1-yr contract, but apparently the Astros have beat me to the punch http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/12/astros-sign-mik.html 5. I would like to see a trade made to bring in a guy that can be a #2 starter for us.
So our rotation would take shape of: YoGa, #2 starter, Parra, Bush, Suppan (unless sheets accepts arbitration, then he is our numero uno until he breaks a nail and is gone for 2 mo's)
Shouse = gone, Gagne - i have this feeling that makes we want to give him another shot in the 8th inning role. (sorry gagne haters, but he still throws 95 and has nasty movement on his pitches)
Bullpen - Stetter, Swindle, Gagne, Villanueva, Riske, McClung, DiFelice/Dillard, one FA signing - this bullpen does not look as bad to me as i know it does to many other ppl out there.
I really dont want to get into specific trade talks (Prince, Hardy), because they would all be arbitrary at this point in time, but to tell u the truth, i would not mind seeing Hardy in another uniform. (if the return is right)
Prince, Weeks (it's his breakout year, we've all heard that one before, but it is what i believe), then some combo of Escobar/Hardy/Hall/FA signing/trade return to play SS, and 3B.
Kendall/Rivera
Outfield gets interesting for me. I would like to trade Cam for a young starter. (maybe team Cam up with a youngster n get that #2 starter i was talking about, or straight up for potential *phil hughes) then we can sign a FA CF, say Taveras (comeback player award year) or trade for DeJesus, and make them our leadoff hitter. LF is easy. Corey Hart on a short leash manning RF.
"My GM" Lineup Overview:
1-Taveras 2-Rickie Weeks (more of a power hitting approach) 3-Braun 4-Fielder 5-Hardy 6-Hart 7-Hall/FA 8-Kendall 9-Pitcher
1-Sheets 2-YoGa 3-Parra 4-Bush 5-Suppan/Hughes
I'd like to believe a team such as this can warrant 86-89 wins. Leave your thoughts and ideas on what the team should do over the course of the next cpl of months..

Taveras
Get me as far away from him as possible.
Doesn’t walk much, batted .320 in 2007 with a .370 BABIP. Last year his BABIP came down to .296 and he had an OPS+ of 56. Yikes.
His fielding ranks in the bottom third of the league as well.

Willy Taveras? What is this, MVP Baseball 2005?

Haha
If only it was. Wayne Collier and Sam Gent would prominently figure into the plans if this were the case.

I remember trying to play a full season at the MLB level with Gent as SS and without editing Gent’s stats… and his numbers were even worse than the ones the real life Gent put up.

Gagne throws 95?
I didn’t see a whole lot of movement either. He’s got that 2-seamer that breaks away from hitters but it doesn’t seem to get many swings. Its hard to imagine him taking less than 3 or 4 million and that would be too much if you ask me.
No CC, Burnett, Lowe or Sheets. Who are the number 2s that are out there? Don’t say Oliver Perez. Greinke or Cain are going to be tough to pry loose.

gagne does throw 95
ill take sheets, woulda taken hampton, perez as a no. 3 guy, maybe looper, possibly garland for <10 mil. … smoltz, fuentes, possibly hoffman for bullpen on short deals.

must not be very often
I recall his fastball sitting around 90-91.
You went and said Perez… not only has he not performed that well, he is a Boras client. Hell no to Looper. Is Smoltz able to pitch? Fuentes won’t be cheap and Hoffman probably won’t be either.

The list of players you wouldn’t take is shorter.

miller park gun had him at 96 consistently
id say it is beefed up a cpl mph. but he was def at 93-94 consistently. n yes i am willing to take a risk on perez for a 2-3 yr deal, the whole boras client thing is bad news though. u must knol something i dont about smoltz, that mid 2 ERA last year doesnt sound too bad to me. id take fuentes for 3/25 not sure if itll get it done tho. Hoffman on a 2 yr doesnt look too bad either. (didnt do my hw on how long of a deal he wants)

Just a succession of failure here
The above numbers are Gagne’s fastball velocities, if you’re wondering.

the sad part
is while you were posting, I was looking for the same info including at fangraphs and didn’t find it.

My take...
Sheets for a 1 yr arbitration number would be a dream come true. I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t receive a premium multiyear deal though, and for more than AJ Burnett. If we can get him back for something like 4 years/$65-70 Mil I think we have to do it.
I think Shouse will be back and we’ll have quality lefties to burn (Swindle/Choate/Stetter/Shouse). Gagne will not sign for what he’s worth (major league minimum). I’d be much more willing to take a Rule V guy for the pen if we still had Maddux as coach. Obviously the FA thing didn’t work for us last year.
Taveras in center is a non-starter. I’m not the only one
who thinks we should move Weeks to CF and plug in Escobar/Irribarren/Hall/FA in the infield.I think we can expect the D and OPS to improve with the natural progression of Hart/Weeks/Hall. I think we’re a quality SP and power-arm-in-the-pen away from contention. I trust Moustache will not blow up our home-grown core and actually has the resources to make a big FA signing or 2 to get us there…

Why do you think Sheets will be getting a bigger deal than Burnett?

Check the numbers...
AGE W L ERA G IP ER HR BB SO CG SHO
32 87 76 3.81 215 1376.3 583 122 568 1278 19 9
AGE W L ERA G IP ER HR BB SO CG SHO
29 86 83 3.72 221 1428.0 591 160 313 1206 18 4
The top one’s AJ, the bottom Sheeter. Eerily similar. They’re both severe injury risks. Sheeter’s younger, so I think he’ll get more $$/years.
