C.C. Ya: Sabathia picks the Yankees
Not a big surprise but I think we were all holding out hope that he would stay in Milwaukee. Thanks for the memories and the end to the playoff drought big man!

The J-S is reporting the same story
thought it’s only quoting the NY Post.

so
I could work for the J-S? Pass. And I gave Sabathia his “periods” back in the title of the post- for $70 million each. Either that or it’s early and I’m tired.

This is sooo sad
The Brewers’ mlb site posted an article late last night about how they were ready “to make their next move” in the CC Sabathia sweepstakes. This is what was front paged on that site when the Post’s story broke.
It’s like that scene in the movies where the awkward hero finally musters up the courage to ask the girl out, and as he gets to her house, he sees her driving off with the varsity team quarterback. Bring on the ergonomically advanced javelin!

Ah yes
Forget Sabathia - this was the biq question this winter. Mike Lamb: woolly or won’t he re-sign with the Brewers?

good luck, CC
Ordinarily, I would be wishing for a Yanks free agent’s arm to fall off the moment after he signs, but it is hard not to like CC and appreciate what he did for this organization in half of a season.

You're a better man than I am.
It’s amazing how little impact the fact that I more or less knew this would happen had on my ability to stave off bitterness. I’m old, so my hatred for the Yankees goes beyond their Ferengi-like tendencies in the free agent market and reaches back to the days of the old AL East. I haven’t forgiven them for 81. If he’d landed in Boston or frankly in LA or SF I probably coud avoid wishing him bad luck.
But he didn’t. He’s a Yankee. And so I’m at war with myself. I’m grateful for last year and how much fun I had watching him, but I’m not a good enough person to get past the pin-stripes he’ll be sporting in Spring.
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

If it helps
At varying points over the past few weeks, he was quoted as saying “I really want to be a Brewer” and “I really want to be a Dodger.” At no point did he say “I really want to be a Yankee”; in fact, it seemed like he DIDN’T want to be one. So feel free to call him a sellout. :)
I saw somewhere this morning that the deal with Yankees might be for 7 years and $160 million.

So at this point
Do we celebrate this as the Yankees overpaying again? I certainly think so.
Some of the projections are rather unfriendly for Mr. Sabbathia, and to be on the hook for that much money could be…Zitoesque.
Or will they be raking in so much money with that new stadium that they could have payed him a a billion and it wouldn’t matter?

Yankees Overpaying
Hell Yes -
Fox Sports is reporting 7/160 for CC
7 years is too long for a pitcher – even as good as CC is – it is too much of a risk.
And if I was CC – I too would have signed the 7 year deal

by Saberilliterate on Dec 10, 2008 9:23 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I wouldn't
I would have taken the 5 with an opt out at 3. The 20 million in 7 years will be worth about 10 or less. Even when you get out to 4 or 5 years, the Randy Wolf’s of the world will be getting paid a lot more in dollar amounts (not necessarily in real buying power). Seems like that will be an uncomfortable situation. It is guaranteed though.
In 3 years his Giants could be a contender and he could have slipped into their rotation.

That's part of it too.
Is it possible to be naiive when you know you’re being naiive? Part of me hoped that he would be the mythical ball player that would choose happiness over cash, not insist on squeezing every last dollar out of his free agency and instead take one of the othe ridiculously lucrative offers and play somewhere else. So there’s that disappointment too.
But I’ve really got no right to feel that way. Only he knows if he believes he’ll be less happy in New York than he would have been elsewhere and only he knows if the cash differential made him turn his back on that knowledge.
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

In fairness
I don’t think he said the “I really want to be a Dodger.” I think that was a misquote — basically his agent saying CC would like LA.

Wasn't the story:
Coletti said he ran into CC in Las Vegas, and CC said he’d love to be a Dodger?
I’m sure Coletti wasn’t giving a direct quote, but the fact that Coletti even said that, suprised me.

Now is the winter of our discontent!
At least, now, we can get sorted in relief pitching and trade talks for starting pitching. I don’t want Burnett, Wolf, or Garland, I want a Matt Cain, a Grienke type.
Sucks to lose him to the Yanks, but at least now we can open up the idea that there just might be other players in the fray next season then one lone pitching spot. Because our 2009 bullpen scares the heck out of me currently.
by Lavender on Dec 10, 2008 8:03 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
At least it's over semi-early
7 Year deal is a long time to project a players value. But at least we can now focus on making the rest of the team better now that the big fish is gone. After we stop being bitter for being a small market team, what’s our next step?
Make a move for Sheets? Try to get Cain/Grenke/Peavey?
by SgtClueLs on Dec 10, 2008 8:33 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Hell yes bring back Sheets
He is asking for a two year deal! Two freakin years of Ben Sheets for around what they were willing to pay for one of Sabathia? You make that deal and don’t think twice about it. Even if Sheets gets hurt on opening day and can’t pitch again you aren’t hamstrung as an organization because of the deal.

but there is that portion of the fan base that doesn’t care and wants him gone no matter what.

When Sheets is healthy he’s a monster, to bad he’s got a tendency to hurt himselfs. He’s worth the relative low risk. YoGa is nothing short of awesome, but I’d feel better with a ace vet to help the kids along.

I’m with you. I don’t think he’s all that high of an injury risk if he isn’t trotted out after hour long rain delays in rat hole Wrigley or pitching frequent games with nutty pitch counts.

I really wonder if Sheets isn't embittered enough to ignore the Brewers...
… assuming 1)they’re interested with Sabathia out of the mix; and 2)he actually has another offer he likes on the table. There are reasons to believe he didn’t like the fact that he wasn’t offered a deal while Sabathia was.

Is the wailing and mashing of teeth if he gets hurt the NYC media will blame it on the fact the Brewers got 2 seasons worth of pitching out of CC in the half season they had him.

It does give you a horrible feeling that he will be in pinstripes, but you got to love him, probably my second favorite player next year STILL only behind Ryan Braun!

A pretty good one, too.

I am a little surprised
I didn’t think he would sign witht the Brewers, but after all that talk about wanting to play in the NL and in Cali, I though he would’ve held out for the Giants or Dodgers. But now ESPN tells me that the Yanks included an opt out clase after 2011. I guess that would work pretty well for him and his family.
Oh well, it was awesome while it lasted and I think Milwaukee will always love CC. Unfortunately, now I have to root for the Yankees for 30-35 games. I’m more of a BoSox fan, so that will be hard.
