The Mikey/Melky Deal Is...
not done, per TBTSNBN. But wait! It's only on hold as the Yankees were too busy signing AJ Burnett to a 5 year, $82.5 million deal. Tom H. suggests it might go down on Monday instead.
Tom seem pretty PO'ed at the Burnett signing too:
THAT MEANS THE YANKEES HAVE SPENT MORE THAN $240 MILLION TO SIGN PITCHERS CC SABATHIA AND BURNETT. AS A POINT OF REFERENCE, OWNER MARK ATTANASIO PAID $223 MILLION FOR THE ENTIRE BREWERS FRANCHISE.
GOOD TO SEE THE DECLINING ECONOMY ISN'T WORRYING THE YANKEES.
It is pretty amazing that two pitchers cost nearly a quarter of a billion dollars.

I'm glad
That Tom used all caps for that, if he hadn’t I might not have been able to tell how he felt about it. /rolls eyes

I need more details
Will his wife get 8 trips by limousine each season to New York like she did when AJ was with Toronto?

I'm feeling optimistic
The more pitchers the Yankees sign, the less they’ll need Ian Kennedy. Even if we have to include a little money with Cameron, I’d be happy to tolerate Milktoast in center if we get an actually good pitching prospect.

Speaking of which
Apparently the Yankees are hoping to bring Andy Pettite back into the fold. Allegedly, that’s whom Cashman was flying out to meet when he left the winter meetings.

Maybe next, the Yanks will sign Teixeira in retaliation for us not eating Cameron’s salary just to screw us out of their 1st rounder.

It's because we're a playoff team
and they aren’t. :)

For some reason, this made me think of the SNL ‘fart face’ sketch with Josh Brolin, and I imagined Cashman saying, ’Let’s sign Teixeira and stick it to that fart face Melvin for not eating some of Cam’ron’s salary.’ Then I laughed.

IIRC, the Yankees are getting extra revenue sharing money for the next few years because of the new stadium. It looks like they’re trying to spend every single penny.
We've got uniforms and everything, it's really great!

With Burnett a Yankee now… don’t the Brewers have to get Hughes in this?
by HRF on Dec 12, 2008 7:35 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
No
Hughes isn’t going anywhere. Forget Hughes.
If the Yankees didn’t trade him for Johan Santana, why in the world would he be included in a deal for Mike Cameron?
by TimQMills on Dec 13, 2008 9:14 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The difference between this year and last year is that Hughes and Kennedy weren’t all that good this year. Steinbrenner being impatient as he is probably won’t care about getting rid of him as it doesn’t look like Hughes or Kennedy will be in their starting rotation at the beginning of the year

Because he’s, at best, their fifth starter right now going forward. So that is why in the world he’d be included—he had far more value last off season at this time than now.

Shocking
I think not. It is the Yanks after all, they have always been a team about spending the dough they have freely.
by tyr on Dec 13, 2008 9:14 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Poor choice of words
The Yanks have not “spent” $240 Million. CC has the option to opt out after 3 years in which case the Yanks will have paid him $92 million. I’m sure there are clauses in AJ Burnett’s contract that if he kills someone while driving drunk or runs and underground dog-fighting ring the Yanks could void his contract. The Yanks haven’t “spent” anything yet.

Being literal are we?
It’s just saying in terms of contracts, if they go for what they’re billed for, it’s what it amounts to. And what it amounts to is ludicrous when you factor in, there are other players on that team…some of whom have the largest contracts in history.

The Yankees *committed to spend* $240 million.
Better?
I don't specifically articulate my motives, because that wouldn't travel as well as a boo does.
