Non-Tender Deadline 2008
The Brewers tendered contracts to Prince Fielder, J.J. Hardy, Corey Hart, Rickie Weeks, Dave Bush, and Seth McClung. Prince, arbitration eligible for the first time along with Hart, Weeks, and McClung, is in for a big raise.
However, most notably left off the list is starting lefty Chris Capuano. After a second Tommy John surgery, who knows what he is capable of doing. However, if he can somehow return even close to the 18-win form he was in 2005, clearly he would be an asset to a team currently deprived of starting pitching due to recent free agent departures.

Edit 9:24 PM: Ty Wiggington has become available through a non-tender from the Astros. A solid 3B pickup, that'd be nice eh?

If the Brewers signed him
Bill Castro would have to be a miracle worker. Cabrera is a model of inconsistency.

I know virtually nothing about him. His “amazing” arm and all the blah, blah about potential makes my ears perk up. His ERA in the AL East was 5. Is there a rule of thumb for translating from AL to NL?
Regardless, just thinking out loud.
I dunno
His BAA has gone up each of the past 4 years, and only once has he had a WHIP under 1.5. (Stats are here.) I’m all for giving anyone who might even remotely be good a shot, though.
It the past 5 years, he’s had 14 ABs, though, and struck out each time. That would be amusing to watch, at least, especially if Sheets doesn’t re-sign. Think Macha will bat Kendall 9th?

When I sorted tRA descending, and Suppan was fourth-worst,
I know Cabrera was very close to the worst qualified. So it’s not like his stuff is limiting line drives, and his walk rate is crazy.
And neck size to baby eating ratio.
Yeah, he's excited people for years
The fact he’s tall and was a hard thrower (his FB keeps slowing down) got people excited initially, but he hasn’t improved any in the majors. Every once in a while he’ll come up with a great start and then follow it up with a string of bad ones. I guess this is the year Baltimore finally gave up on those good starts coming in bunches. Maybe a change of scenery would help him but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Here's an idea
make him a closer. He’s got the stuff to be nasty, why not?
I just sit back and root for the taser
Chuck Woolery + James Earl Jones?

Fun side story
There’s a version of the Bible narrated by James Earl Jones that I really want to get. I think it’ll be hilarious to throw in some Vader breathing as well.
"If loving CC is wrong I do not want to be right"
"If lovin’ Braun is wrong, I want to be a repeat offender"
So was Tim Redding
per Rambling Al. His WHIP over the past two years is decidedly mediocre (Redding’s, not Rambling Al’s), which isn’t so bad for a fifth starter. (Stats here.) They’re better than Suppan’s, and by a fair margin.
I’ve tried supporting the Suppan signing, but I’ve about given up. If Redding can be had for cheap, wouldn’t it be worth it to just dump Suppan altogether, take the hit, and sign someone like Redding? Yes, you’re losing his entire salary, but you might pick up a few wins in the process.

This theory sounds decidedly familiar.
I agree with your ideas, of course.

I'm all for picking up Redding for $3MM or whatever
regardless of what that means for Supp.
Also, cheese.

I'm all for cutting Suppan.

Your signature got me thinking
If Cameron goes, will we tuck or not tuck?

If Cameron goes, my guess is that business goes with him.
The most enthusiastic participants that I saw were Cameron (of course), Sabathia and Prince, and 2 of them would be gone, and I doubt Big Surly will carry that on without them.
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

Ah, but see
You are forgetting that Braun, Hart, and Hardy constantly untuck their shirts before the game is even over.
"If loving CC is wrong I do not want to be right"
"If lovin’ Braun is wrong, I want to be a repeat offender"
that got me thinking
about the seinfeld episode where george is asking lupe the maid in the hotel not to tuck in his bedsheets and then asking jerry what he wants. unfortunately, i couldn’t find that clip
I untuck my shirt!
I live in Virginia
& got to see Cabrera and Redding pitch multiple times. My thoughts:
Cabrera’s natural stuff is as good as anyone I’ve ever seen. His 2-seamer comes at 95 and has so much movement that nobody knew where it would go. He gets zero borderline calls. After watching umpteen 10 BB 8K 7 inning games I gave up on thinking he could ever get it together. He obviously tried to dial it down last year to try and get improved control. When that didn’t work he’d overthrow 99 mph 4-seamers all over the place. I don’t see the Brewers getting involved with him.
Redding’s got good stuff and command and control. He was the Nat’s best pitcher at times last year. He’s even more of an injury risk than Sheeter or Burnett. I’d say he’s a solid #3 for the 2 months of the season when he’s not on the DL.
For all the denigration of Suppan, I’m pretty sure he’s a better bet to log 180 quality innings than either of these guys…
I'll take Redding, but if we're paying Suppan anyway
I’d rather keep him around in long relief and as a contingency plan if/when someone has to miss a start.
I don't specifically articulate my motives, because that wouldn't travel as well as a boo does.

Or put him in the minors for when someone inevitably gets injured.
If someone claims him off of waivers, than they can have his contract!

Could Ty Wiggington fill the Craig Counsell utility role on the infield?
Getting some spot starts, possibly even starting third baseman. Bill Hall can fill in at short if the situation requires it. <-That was painful to say.
There are a lot of people who will be after him
He’ll start somewhere. Think of all the teams shopping for 3B.
if anything that shows how tight money is in Hooooston. They also brought back Backe, so despite the willingness of players to redo their contracts to try and bring Sheets there, I’d say it becomes less likely.
Guys that interest me
Takeshi Saito
Chris Burke- counsell replacement
Wiggington
and how about Joey Gathright? Who wouldn’t want a guy who jumps over cars on their team?
I just sit back and root for the taser
Complete list of non-tender chickens
is here. Well, they omit the Mets, but the Mets players seem to be in the comments.
