Winter League Update for 12/22/2008

In Mexico: Jason Bourgeois went 3-for-6 over the weekend with five walks and a stolen base. He's hitting .353/.420/.432 for Mochis.

In Venezuela:
  • Alcides Escobar entered the game as a defensive replacement Friday but did not make a plate appearance.
  • Hernan Iribarren went 1-for-12 with a walk and three runs scored over the weekend in his first action since November 22.
  • Brendan Katin went 4-for-14 with two doubles and a triple, driving in six runs for Zulia.
  • Jorge Julio had a disastrous outing Friday, giving up six earned runs on three hits and two walks in .2 innings.
  • Luis Pena gave up a run on two walks while failing to retire a batter Friday.
  • Luis Ramirez retired the only two batters he faced in his debut Saturday. It's possible he hadn't pitched since playing in West Virginia in 2007.
In the Dominican Republic:
  • Joe Bateman pitched 1.1 scoreless innings for Este, allowing one hit and striking out one. He's only allowed one earned run in his last eight innings.
  • Rafael Lluberes retired the only batter he faced Saturday and picked up his first DWL win.
In Puerto Rico:
  • Charlie Fermaint went 7-for-10 over the weekend with a double and a stolen base. He's hitting .358/.434/.418 in 67 PWL at bats.
  • Eduardo Morlan walked a man but allowed nothing else in .2 innings of work Friday to pick up his third PWL save.
  • Efrain Nieves picked up his first PWL win Friday, pitching two scoreless innings with two hits, a walk and two strikeouts. He has a 2.61 ERA despite allowing 16 baserunners in 10.1 innings.

such a mixed bag

Where was Iribarren for 3 weeks or so? Sick or taking time off? Did anyone ever tell Katin, “hey take some walks”? Is Joe Bateman good enough to be in the bullpen next year? Is Morlan a find? What’s up with Charlie Fermaint, classic small sample joy?

Eduardo Morlan

Has to be on the roster all year or we have to offer him back to the Rays for half the 50k claim fee from the Rule 5. While his WB is a small sample size, he seems to be acquitting himself rather well.

And I’m guessing he gets a shot to be on the roster for a good part of the season. The best part is, if he pitches well, we got a steal. If he pitches poorly, we just offer him back. If the Rays don’t want him back, we send him to AAA.

I tried translating some news stories with Iribarren

Here are some of the quotes I’ve found:

In the legs of the gardener Hernan Iribarren, arrived three of the endorsements by Cardinals capitalized. Scored three times and detonated an indisputable in four visits to the batting box.
More than three innings it took to the offensive again be the star of the night. For Cardinals, Luis Jimenez again boost at the feet of Hernan Iribarren the third entry.
Cardinals took the loss through injury of their opener alignment, Hernan Iribarren, baseball player who proved to be the best bat first circuit, also located between the leaders in several offensive lines, including the bases and triples connected scams.
He also indicated that the injured Hernan Iribarren is ready to return to the alignment but will give you a few more days and would be playing the weekend.

Based on those, it appears Hernan must have suffered a minor injury, simply needed a boost or was off tending his garden.

I don't specifically articulate my motives, because that wouldn't travel as well as a boo does.

Actually, the next quote gives a better clue:
Hernan Iribarren served eight days without being in the lineup for their illnesses in the left femur,

Sounds like it’s probably a hamstring?

Sounds like a prison sentence

Maybe they locked him up for stealing some bases and he got shanked in the left femur during the process?

ya gotta love those translations

"Scored three times and detonated an indisputable… " There goes the G rating.

That's why you only drink bottled water

"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"

I find this amusing

Scored three times and detonated an indisputable in four visits to the batting box.
