2008 Final KUG Rankings
Though a bit late, I finally tweaked the formula to construct the final KUG ratings for last season. Here's a quick overview in the changes in the formula:
- I took out the penalty for stolen bases, but kept the bonus for caught stealing. That's a bit of a compromise, instead of finding the mean absolute deviation of league SB+CS numbers. Hopefully Pags is happy about this.
- I added Contact % into the multipliers part of the formula. Kendall led the team, Counsell was second. It's a gritty stat.
- Instead of multiplying the three rates together and then multiplying that by the raw grit rates, I added them and then multiplied to decrease the effect a bit.
- I took out the age and height modifiers, we can just factor them into our grit evaluation methods without me trying to factor them into the formula.
- Finally, per Battlekow's suggestion last time I published the rankings, the final numbers are now expressed as a percentage of Kendall's 2007 half-season with the A's. That gives us a constant to judge the numbers on without the problem of setting it on a scale. Kendall did far exceed his 2007 Oakland grit production this year, as you will see below.
Once again, if anyone wants the formula changed again, just post a suggestion in the comments. This stat may be useless-- but I think it's tweaked to the point where it gives a pretty good indication of how gritty a player is, and I can update it easily.
I also uploaded the spreadsheet to Google docs, in case anyone wants to see the full methodology, or see if I made any stupid mistakes.

Who would have thought that Rickie Weeks would be grittier than Gabe Kapler.

Kapler was way too good to be really gritty
A regression in homers and stuff like that will improve his grit next season.

Disclaimer: Not being racist!
But there should be a grit bonus for white players. Kendall, Counsell, Eckstein…the list goes on.

Yeah, only the white players get an "s" in front of "crappy"

Branyan is only at 5%?
Is TTO the anti-grit? The Slushy?
