Another one bites the dust: Giants sign Randy Johnson
Well, the number of credible #2 starters just decreased by one, as the San Francisco Giants just signed Randy Johnson to a one-year deal. Financials not available.
If you're keeping track, that gives the G-men three Cy Young winners in their starting rotation. That's crazy.
That also leaves only John Smoltz as a pitcher I would be OK with (maybe) as a #1/#2 starter. That's crazy too.

But one of those three Cy Young winners is Barry Zito.
I think right now, most people would really rather take Cain…or a lot of other people…over Zito.
Also, I thought that I had heard Smoltz wants to pitch in the bullpen if he pitches next season. Maybe I’m wrong, or getting quotes mixed up or something, but I thought thats what I heard.

I actually had to look up the Giants' rotation to make the connection of Zito as the third Cy Young winner
That’s how far removed Barry Zito is from relevance in my mind.

Shut yo mouth
That’s practically begging Melvin to trade for him.

I’d still take Sheets as a #1/2.

That's right
Plus there’s still Derek Lowe. I forgot about those two, or I’ve already assumed they won’t be in Milwaukee next season.
Though I think he’s a bit overrated, there’s also Oliver Perez. I was surprised to learn that he’s had more strikeouts than innings pitched. He’s kind of all over the place, though. Good in 2002, horrendous in 2003, fantastic in 2004, horrendous again in 2005 and 2006, really good again in 2007, and then pretty good last season. How does one have a WHIP in consecutive seasons of 1.6, 1.1, 1.6, and 1.8?
Anyway, he had a 1.40 WHIP last season, which for me is the cutoff between “hey, this guy is OK” and “hey, this guy is Jeff Suppan.” He might be OK to have, but rely on him at your own peril.

I'd think they'd have to break up the 3 left handers
but hopefully the Brewers see those 3 a lot.

This is where we implement the strategy!
I think it was battlekow who suggested they let CC lead off the game when he’s not pitching and then bring in Weeks or whoever in the bottom of the inning to play defense. You do this with Clung when the Brewers face Johnson to get him the AB.

...he was only a little bit below replacement last year
Sad when your shiny new replacement CF is a 1-win upgrade over your old one.
I kinda feel bad. A lot of Brewer fans complain about Melvin, and I don’t think they realize how good we have it.
If he plays +10 run defense, it might not be too terrible of an acquisition, but UZR hasn’t liked him the past two years.
And two years? What the hell?
I like how they spelled Jockettty in the press release. Too many ttts there.

Bruce to RF then?
That’s kinda weird.
Also, hey, it’s nice to see that Cincinnati.com is still beta. Wouldn’t want to jump the gun on this whole internet thing in case it’s just a fad. We all remember what happened with the Cinci-nappy™, the city’s version of the Chia Pet.

Bruce mostly played RF
The plan has always been to play him there instead of RF. I believe when he was in center, Ken Griffey, Jr. was still blocking him in right.

Crazy number of steals. Jocketty had to see plenty of him when he was with the Astros.

From the SF Chronicle (via CNNSI)
“Johnson’s arrival may fuel speculation that a starter will be dealt to improve the offense.”
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

Rangers GM on Sheets
Since the subject is pitching and I’m not sure where to stick this (no not there thanks), but Jon Daniels did a radio interview with Norm Hitzges. Paraphrasing from memory, Daniels said that he has maintained contact with Casey Close (agent), hasn’t made an offer yet, and was waiting because the market for Sheets was still unknown. He was starting to talk about that and the idjit interviewer cut him off and changed the question.
It sounds like Daniels is waiting to see what anyone will offer Sheets and he might not have had any serious offers. Daniels has also said elsewhere they aren’t going to contend next year and are shooting for the year after, so I would think the offer has to be for 3 or more years.
Are the Brewers doing the same and offering the one year deal?
A weird thing to me from reading the article about the interview was that they said Sheets has a home in Highland Park in Dallas. That’s the old, snobby, wealthy, elite neighborhood and I didn’t picture Ben as a Highland Park kind of guy. Actually I didn’t picture him as a Dallas kind of guy.

Brad Penny is now a Red Sock
The hoser. A cheap deal, too: $5 million base, with another $3 million in incentives.
