Brewers Sign RHP Jorge Julio
1-year deal. Probably the first of a few random relief pitchers to be signed. Not a whole lot of downside here, and he's had some decent numbers. Pretty good K rate throughout his career. Something like Mota without the big salary.

"Something like Mota without the big salary. "
Precisely. I’d much rather have three guys at $1 – $1.5MM to see who looks good in spring training than one Mota.
(Not that Mota would be bad in that price range, but he certainly wasn’t in that price range last year!)
Also, cheese.
Ooh, plus:
He’s got 99 career saves. The Brewers will surely get a huge attendance spike in April as the fans show up to watch Julio try for #100!
Also, cheese.
He's only 29?
I could’ve sworn he was in his mid-30’s.

It's all the time he spends hanging out
I don't specifically articulate my motives, because that wouldn't travel as well as a boo does.
nice.
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

don't encourage him
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
I wouldn't have minded
getting Renteria for 2 seasons @ 18.5mil

“with eight walks and 19 strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings”
So he has no idea where it’s going once it leaves his hand.
I like the signing.
Sounds like another guy who the Brewers cut loose last year

ERA+
121 ERA+ overall last season, and finished with 12 IP at ATL with a .73 ERA for a 583 ERA+. If he can roll that momentum into next season, outstanding. If he can only pitch to his season total…its still 16 points higher than Mota’s ERA+ of 105 last season.
All in all, I think its a good signing. Put him in the 7th, let him throw 95-98, McClung in the 8th 96-100, Villanueva 9th 82-86 with his 70 MPH change. Sounds like a tough day for hitters.
might be wishful thinking

Sure it is
Aren’t most signings? At least of free agents who don’t even make the Elias rankings?
But if he can pitch better than Mota did last year (and statistically, he did, though in less IP)…and that won’t be too difficult with a 105 ERA+…doesn’t this turn into a great signing?

We also don't lose any draft picks for him as he was not a type A or B player.
Eric Gagne DL time: May 23-June 29 Brewers record in that span: 20-9
Some interesting stuff about velocity
Fangraphs only has velocity and pitch selection data back to 2005. The first three years his FB velocity was 94.3, 95.3, 95.1. This year was 93.5, a pretty substantial drop. He also threw a lot less fastballs and a lot more changes and sliders, and hitters only made contact on 80% of his pitches in the zone compared to 90% the other 3 years. Looks like he really did some things different last year, hopefully they were conscious and good.
And neck size to baby eating ratio.
I like it
good “buy low” signing without much financial risk if he stinks it up in spring training.
