Rumorville: Randy Johnson
The Brewers appear to be in the running at landing Randy Johnson, a pitcher with the greatest porn name this side of Stubby Clapp.
According to the East Valley Tribune...
Randy Johnson may have a chance to win his 300th game in the NL West after all. The Diamondbacks' division foes San Francisco and the Los Angeles Dodgers are among the teams that have inquired about Johnson's availability for the 2009 season, according to major league sources familiar with the situation.
Milwaukee, Oakland, Texas and the Chicago Cubs also have expressed varying degrees of interest, sources said.
[snip]
"Randy is a well-known commodity. Teams that are pursuing CC ... if they can't sign CC, they could be very interested in signing Randy."
Stats on the Big Randy Unit are here. Since leaving the Expos, only once has he had a "bad" season, in 2006 with the Yankees, when he had an ERA of 5. (Even then, he went 17-11.) Keep in mind, though, that his days of 300 strikeout seasons seem well behind him, as he hasn't accomplished that feat since 2002. He's also had his share of injuries the past couple of seasons, which gives one pause when looking at a 45-year-old, and even in last season's comeback season, his WHIP and BAA were the highest they've been since 2003.

Heard yesterday
That Lowe is waiting to sign until CC signs. That means the Big Unit has to wait until about 15 other pitchers sign.

Johnson would be a ridiculously good signing
He’s willing to sign for 1 year, around $10-$15 million, no compensation required. He had a 3.91 ERA, 173 K and 44 BB in 183 innings last year. If he has another year like that, we’re playoff contenders. If he gets hurt, we probably wouldn’t have made it anyway. He’s a perfect guy for the Brewers to invest in if they don’t get Sheets or Sabathia.
And neck size to baby eating ratio.

But will he be there long enough for Melvin to get around to considering it?
I suspect Johnson’s market is pretty much set regardless of what Sabathia gets, so if the right team expresses some interest, why would he wait?

A lefty!
You know, they do say it take southpaws a few years to figure out their stuff…
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"

Is it true that he once owned an SUV...
… with a caricature of himself throwing a fastball painted on the side? I heard he did at one time.
If true, he’s a human “you might be a redneck” joke.

He once killed a bird. Doesn’t discount that value in a division with the Cardinals.

Gee, if the Brewers sign Johnson, this is really going to drop McClung’s batting average right in the tank.
