Let's Play GM: Corey Hart for Franklin Gutierrez
2008 Numbers for the principals:
UZR/150:
Corey Hart: -0.7
Franklin Gutierrez: 22.5
Gap: Gutierrez PLUS 23.2
SLASH STATS --- VORP
Corey Hart: .268/.300/.459 --- 11.6
Franklin Gutierrez: .248/.307/.383 --- -3.2
Gap: Hart PLUS 14.8
Combined: Gutierrez PLUS 8.4
Gutierrez: Four years of control, born 2/21/1983
Hart: Three years of control, born 3/24/1982
Do YOU make this trade? Should the Brewers sell low on Hart and get an elite defensive outfielder back who'll challenge Jason Kendall for the rights to the eighth spot in the order, or do they keep the faith in the hacker free-swinger Hart and hope he gets close to his mint numbers of 07 where he posted .288/.358/.527, good for a 34.2 VORP?

I'll take the better offense that Hart provides.
And assume that he will be better than he was last year. I think he’ll be close to his 2007 numbers again next year. I certainly am not guessing he is in for a Jeff Franceour-like dropoff. (Namedrop: My spanish class partner in school is cousins with Franceour)
Eric Gagne DL time: May 23-June 29 Brewers record in that span: 20-9
maybe you should learn to spell it then.
or just call him Frenchy. ;-)
"Nothing is working right now with a lot of the guys. We're trying to see pitches and see what we can do. ... I'm not going to sit there and walk, though. I'll eventually find it, and hopefully we'll still be in it." -Corey Hart
Eh. I figured I was spelling it wrong.
Too lazy to look it up.

Yes, but mispelling french names is fun.
Mostly because it annoys the french, which is always a positive.
I have an unreasonable dislike of Bill Hall.

If the Indians really undervalue defense
..which I don’t think they do, then it’s a good idea.
Ideally, you trade Hart for a better pitcher and then get a guy like Gutierrez to take Hart’s place for something less, because his GM undervalues defense. That’s how you find inefficiencies; however I think Shapiro is smart enough to realize how important defense is.
I personally wouldn’t do this trade because Hart has been a better defender in the past as well as a much better hitter. But I wouldn’t mind trading him and finding a replacement RF that produces similarly.
And neck size to baby eating ratio.
Is it undervaluing defense
or valuing it correctly at the margins? There is no shortage of all glove/no stick guys in the minors. The Brewers probably have a guy or two in their system right now that could produce comparable numbers. Why give up something that is rare, an average to above average glove/above average stick, to get something that isn’t? That’s a Sal Bando move.

Thinking about this again
You can’t really compare UZR/150 to VORP, because VORP is cumulative. You have to use regular UZR.
Franklin’s UZR was 17.4, and his VORP would have been a bit worse if he had played the full year with the same offensive production. So it’s really close in total value, and with Hart having a down year in my opinion, I wouldn’t do the trade. But my point above stands, that I wouldn’t mind dealing Hart and then picking up a guy like Gutierrez to take his place.
And neck size to baby eating ratio.
No problem
It is awesome that we can use this stuff, though. It wasn’t long ago that a post like this would have been:
Hart: .268, 20 homers, 91 rbi
Gutierrez: .248, 8 homers, 48 rbi
And neck size to baby eating ratio.
