Rumorville: Jake Peavy to the Cubs
The mlb.com Hot Stove Blog is reporting that the Cubs are close to completing a multi-team trade (perhaps involving the Phillies) that will bring in Jake Peavy.
That would give them a starting rotation of:
- Jake Peavy
- Carlos Zambrano
- Rich Harden
- Ryan Dempster
- Ted Lilly
What's that, 4 #1 pitchers and a #2 making up their starting five? If there were a time for a Scott Bakula/Quantum Leap "oh boy," this'd be it.
Good thing we have Jeff Suppan.

If they give up
all of their trade chips— Vitters, Marshall, Fontenot or Derosa, Cedeno— it makes it a little better. I’m not planning on winning the division anyway… Wildcard! This would make them older and more likely to collapse in 2 years.
Re: Suppan sucking, I’ll write a post a little later about how much he really does suck.
And neck size to baby eating ratio.
Ugh
It’s frustrating that they could very easily keep us out of the playoffs, yet they have no chance of winning the world series.
That's a pretty scary rotation
Would the MLBPA be upset if we just kidnapped Sheeters and CC back?
CC
Sheets
Gallardo
Parra
Bush
Rotation wouldn’t be something to laugh at!
Sad that that rotation still wouldn't be as good as the Cubs with Peavy.
Sigh.
Eric Gagne DL time: May 23-June 29 Brewers record in that span: 20-9
That rotation could be the deepest ever
Assuming all healthy- may not be as top heavy when Randy Johnson and Schilling led the Dbacks… but they could have a 3 man rotation and move Harden or Dempster to the bullpen
4 legitimate candidates for NL Cy young at the start of the year.
If they do get Peavy, I think I will put money on them winning the World Series, that team would be ridiculous… I don’t care about the history
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
3 man rotation for the playoffs that is
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
I'll agree that's a dang good team
But there are potential problems. Peavy’s not as good away from Petco, Zambrano’s been trending downward for years and has had health issues, Harden has made it through 1 full year in his career and has had numerous arm and elbow problems, Dempster won’t replicate his 2008, and Lilly is getting old.
They would have absolutely no trading chips.
And, if by chance they’re hit hard by injuries or catch a flukey first-round exit in the playoffs again, that team does not look good in 2010, 2011, 2012 and beyond.
Who is the potential sixth starter in that alignment if they trade Marshall and Hart? Spellcheck might be the only starter they have left if someone goes down.
And neck size to baby eating ratio.
Let's Hope
That Peavy is this year’s Brian Roberts.
We've got uniforms and everything, it's really great!
had the headphones on while shoveling and shoveling... and shoveling
I forget what station was on but they talked to Seth Everett. He said that the reason they are cutting payroll was to reduce the value of the team. The owner is getting divorced and in order to keep the team he has to make it worth less so that when they divide property it fits in his 50 percent. He also suggested that Peavy didn’t really want to be traded. Part of the way he was manipulating the situation was to require that the team he was traded to didn’t give up too much for him because he wanted them to be competitive.
At least that was what he said.
I think drezdn got it right
This is Brian Roberts all over again. The Cubs don’t have the pieces themselves to get this put together and I don’t see them getting a 3+ team deal together.
Plus, while I’d obviously love to have Peavy, the starting rotation isn’t what let us down last year. Marquis was frustrating last year, but he still isn’t bad for a 5th starter.
