Brauns S-O-M Card!! YUMMY

I've been playing Strat-O-Matic since the 60's and I KNOW some of you guys play it.

Take a peak at Ryan Braun's card.  And look at his fielding LOL.

HMMM - OK - I need more words.  Did Ryan actually use a glove?? Did anyone know HOW bad he was at 3B?  I mean WOW!!  No wonder Cappy's and Suppan's ERA was  higher then normal.

Wow
I understand maybe 10% of the surface area of that card, all in the bottom left hand corner.  Might as well be Sanskrit.

Heh!
I agree. Certainly, the numbers look good for any overall season, but I'd bet he hits more dingers than that...

I would take a gander
on more walks too, since nearly all of our youngins have improved their patience from year to year.  I see Braun trying to be more of a Musial than a Jackson, and am sure he understands the offensive importance of a natural power hitter in taking his walks.  In two or three years I wouldn't be surprised if he begins drawing 90+ a year.  That is my 'gut' scouting report.  Take it for what it is worth.  (Very little)

I agree
So how do we read 3b-5e39, which I imagine is the fielding lol that you're referring to because Braun played 3b?  To scientists like me -5e39 looks like a very large negative number.

by keephopealive on Feb 13, 2008 11:20 AM CST up reply actions

It's simple
  • 3b = third base
  • -5e = a population decrease of 5 people ("e" = "everyone in the stands")
  • 39 = for every 39 throws that go over Prince Fielder's head.
In short, they're predicting that if Braun plays a season at third base, 39 throws to first will go over Prince's head and into the stands, killing 5 unsuspecting fans.

Remember when Jenkins' had "Jenkins Jungle"?  The first 10 rows directly behind 1st base should be "Braun's Bullseye."

:)

OK, that's not nice.  Ryan, I take it back.

Sorry - family Crisis
SOM is a stat based card game that is in the Hall of Fame.  What you see is Ryan's card.

you have three dice (or computer).  ! dice says what column to look on and the sum of the other two show results.

The good thing about the game is that it is VERY realistic and tells you about players in a way most people to not see.

3b-5e39   Means he has NO range.  "5" is the worst rating you can have for range.  e39 means in a full year he will have about 39 errors.

also of note - slow runner, can't H&R and can not bunt BUT can steal.

Something else shows up - against Lefties he gets walks, against righties those walks become strikeouts.

Also - a lack of gbA which is a double play on the left side but a few more on the right side.

What I'm afraid of is with so many lefty killers on the Brewers that they might face very few lefties this year.

the defensive evaluation
is debatable. I'm in a small minority, but IMO he was already an average infielder with decent range. He usually throws the ball well when it is a quick throw, but he does terrible when he fields the ball and has time. I would guess that 10 or 11 of his errors were overthrowing when he had plenty of time.

I doubt any team would change their rotation in the regular season because the Brewers hit lefties well. What it does mean is that the Brewers may struggle against RHers who throw a lot of off speed stuff like Bronson Arroyo or Jason Marquis.

the defensive evaluation
I'm not sure what your getting at.

Braun DID have the worst zone rating in the majors last year - by a LOT!! In fact he had the worst zone rating of any 3B in the last 10 years.  The guy was a lead foot.

Don't get me wrong - I love the guy but he was the worst full time 3B in the Majors in the last 10 years and that does not include his Fielding Pct which was ALSO the worst in the Majors.

Look at who was 2nd worst

Kevin Kouzmanoff had 1135 innings at third with 21 errors.  Ryan had 945 with 25 errors.

People don't realize just HOW bad of a fielder he is!

As for teams changing their rotations - depends. The Cubs faced something like 5 lefties in their first 80 games last year (or some other amazing number).

Granted - most teams think the Cubs are a bigger threat then the Brewers but with Cameron ANOTHER lefty killer and with the Brewers lack of hitting vs. RHP - it's a worry

UZR and RZR et al
are crude estimates that have flaws. The very people who created them don't consider them accurate enough to apply over short periods like a season. Braun hasn't played a season yet.

Defense is also a team activity unlike batting. There are multiple individuals involved in the production of almost all outs, especially for Braun. For instance, his usual first basemen is fairly short. If it was someone like Derrek Lee and his rating increased significantly would he be a better fielder?

The fielder's position are not calculated either. You've seen Yost's shifts. He loves them. When a ball is hit in a zone, the rating doesn't consider whether it is reasonable or not.

And like all science, the calculations are built on raw data. That's a guy looking at videotapes. How good is that? Its unknown. The Brewers, including Braun can have their ratings radically affected by the competence of the individual or how well he correlates to others doing the rating. The Brewers could be affected by camera positions or lack of cameras. I've read that the two sources of raw data, BIS and STATS, don't match very well.

I'd be interested in seeing calculations done when Braun's overthrows that weren't hurried were taken out.

And think about working backwards (or in my mind forwards) and looking at team defensive performance. Using runs allowed, the Brewers are about middle of the NL. Supposedly Prince isn't very good, Hardy is mediocre without much range, Ricky is poor, Billy was bad, Jenks was average to above average and you could say the same thing about Corey. Oh, and everybody will tell you that Johnny was really bad. That's the description of a bad defense. That defense and pitching and luck I suppose are the elements that determine runs allowed. With a bad defense, the pitching would have to be pretty good.

Is Braun a bad fielder? Maybe yes, maybe no. A lot depends on how you define it and how you measure it.

Granted - I agree - however
Granted - I agree - however. I'm certainly not a person that can tell what is good what is bad unless I look at every play by every player.

Watching one guy for 162 games tells you nothing about if he is good and if he is bad when compared to all other players.

All you can do is see that he was the WORST of any starter in the last 10 years for that ONE year with hard data that is currently available.

Is he the worst?  We will never know but we do know he was closer to being the worst then to being only below average.

Again - I'm not saying I dislike Braun.

Actually I'm HAPPY he was so bad because it is something that can be fixed.

by Grinder12000 on Feb 15, 2008 10:36 AM CST up reply actions

your hard data
is based on soft data. You can assign a number to any soft data and then it becomes hard data which is what is going on in the process of producing zone ratings. They make repeated qualitative judgements.

I'm curious what was so bad and how it will be fixed by moving him to the outfield?

by ol Pete on Feb 16, 2008 10:11 AM CST up reply actions

well pete
you seem big on not using stats to tell how good a player is, you like to use your own observations. So i will use no stats, i watched about 150 of the games last year. Along with god knows how many games of other teams. And strictly by my observations, braun was by far the worst third baseman i saw. So there, the stats say it, as do my obersevations, he sucks. Every system has flaws, there is nothing that will be perfect, but when every system we have says that he was awful, its pretty hard to deny that he was a horrible third baseman.

by DoubleJ235 on Feb 15, 2008 5:56 PM CST up reply actions

No
I prefer to use statistics scientifically. I use stats all the time. I provided a rock solid statistic of Brewers defense, runs allowed. No commentary followed.

Just because people invent statistics in entrepeneurial efforts doesn't mean they're good.

But go ahead with those observations. What was Ryan Braun sucky at?

Speaking of Ryan Braun
What a cool guy.

T-shirt
Apparently, its a new type of fashion. Ive seen a lot of those type shirts, along with that one, at The Buckle. I can see you wearing that type of shirt ol Pete.

okay
I'm thinking there is humor in there, but I don't know about The Buckle. I need another clue.

by ol Pete on Feb 14, 2008 2:10 PM CST reply actions

The Buckle
Its a retail store for guys between 20-30. Really no joke intended anywhere other than you being named ol Pete and I can't see you wearing a shirt with a big skeleton on it.

by brewfan2 on Feb 14, 2008 2:20 PM CST up reply actions

crazy me
I was thinking it was one of those, uh... nautical themed bars.

Somewhere I actually do have some t-shirts with skulls on them. Of course they're old grateful dead shirts and not ones from the Buckle.

Buckle
...is a mall store you go to after leaving Spencer Gifts.  A friend of mine bought some shoes there while our wives were shopping --- we were the only ones there over 30, including the store managers.
