Cubs Vs. Brewers

Everyone is obviously, picking the Cubs to win this division, but I thought I would compare our players with the cubs players at each position. I really don't know how to adequately compare them, so I'm going to use an arbitrary 1-5 number system. Maybe I'll get crazy and throw some decimals in there. Consider this an overall grade, with an obvious bias towards offense. My numbers equate to 2.5=average  3+=very good  4+=All Star  5=Hall of Fame

Catcher:
Kendall 2.2
Soto      2.6

1st Base:
Fielder  4.5
Lee        3.7

2nd Base:
Weeks   2.9
Derosa  2.5

3rd Base:
Hall         2.8
Ramirez 4.2

Shortstop:
Hardy      3.2
Theriot    2.8

Left Field:
Braun      4.4
Soriano   4.4

Centerfield:
Cameron/Gwynn   3.4
Pie/Johnson            2.8

Right Field:
Hart                 3.9
Fukudome      2.8

Ace:
Sheets              3.6
Zambrano        4.2

#2 Pitcher:
Gallardo         3.9
Lilly                 3.7

#3 Pitcher:
Suppan           2.7
Hill                  3.6

#4 Pitcher:
Bush                2.4
Dempster       2.9

#5 Pitcher:
Villy/Manny    3.4
Marquis           2.8

Closer:
Gagne               3.8
Wood                3.6

Setup:
Turnbow           3.3
Marmol             4.2

Riske                  3.6
Howry                3.9

Mota                  2.9
Lieber                2.5

Shouse               3.1
Hart                    2.6

Torres                3.5
Wuertz               3.7

That's what I've come up with. I really tried to be as objective as possible, but my Cubs hatred runs pretty deep.

Here are the final tallies:
Brewers:  63.5
Cubs:       63.5

I really did not mean for the numbers to be exact, but I guess that shows what kind of season we have in front of us.

Feel free to agree or rip apart any of these rankings.

my own analysis

"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"

Pace yourself RJ.
If you spend all your anti-Cub vitriol in March you won't have enough left to snicker your way through the Brewers march to the division title in September. :)

Remember
It's a marathon (of loathing) not a sprint.

I don't think we're in any danger
of anti-Cub vitriol running out.

Even if RJ exhausts his energies, there are hundreds of us waiting to fly the flag in his place.

It's a marathon, not a sprint, but that doesn't we can't run fast the whole way :).

Also, cheese.

In spirit of Yosting
Will we designate anyone for 7th, 8th inning and closer vitriol duty?  I volunteer for the LOOGY vitriol position.

Mop Up
Can I be the Mop Up taunter, coming in when we're way behind? Like a Chuck Crim of troll defense.

Marty could manage the taunters
...then we'd start a site criticizing him when he leaves the 8th inning taunter in too long when he clearly doesn't have his best stuff.

Hey
I sent a guy out there to do a job and he didn't get it done.  Plain and simple.

two bits i like
Everyone is obviously picking the Cubs to win this division

did you mean "obviously, everyone is picking the cubs to win this division" or "everyone is obviously picking the cubs to win this division?"

;)

Also, i like this:

Maybe I'll get crazy and throw some decimals in there.

And then at no time were you not crazy. that's crazy awesome.

It's fun ranking players like you did. However, one of the problems with totaling it up like you did, or any straight 1 to 1 comparison is that you have brian shouse as important as aramis ramirez by weighting them the same (1).

So break it up into three groups, hitters, starters and bullpen and see how your totals come out, might be a little more interesting.

Also, I take sheets over lilly and hill easy, and both suppan and bush about equal or slightly better than dempster.

Thanks for the advice
Also, comma needs to be added to my sentence, and I'll change that.

I see what you mean about the weights, and I originally thought about it. However, I was so surprised that both teams ended with the same number that I thought I would leave it.

Sheets
I think wins are a very stupid stat when looking at pitchers.  So, to make myself look stupid, I'm going to say that until Sheets can win more than 12 games in a season, I'm not going to rate him very high.

Strange comparisons
According to the baseball-reference website (I think that's it). One of Riske's top comparable players: Mota. So the two are interchangeable.

Gagne's top comparison: Francisco Cordero

D. Lee
is almost assuredly a 4+, but good off the cuff comparison none the less.  Baseball is almost here!

by Braunstalker on Mar 28, 2008 8:59 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah
I thought about rating him higher, but even though he has been hurt, 30 total homers in 2 years isn't very good. However, his defense is outstanding.

Okay, so in a unitless metric...
...you just made up, that (admittedly) is biased toward offense (and presumably away from defense, the Brewers' biggest liability)... the Cubs and Brewers are a dead heat.

Does this maybe explain why the Cubs are favored to win the division? Just... maybe?

I'm so glad you have shined the light on this obscure subject for us.

Wanted to create conversation
I felt by creating my own numbers, it would stir up more conversation.

With defense, I think the brewers will be better this year and I don't think the cubs are that much better.

i expect better from you.
