Brewers 2008 Payroll

The Journal Sentinel was nice enough to break down the salaries of your 2008 Brewers, which I will steal in its entirety.

Milwaukee Brewers 2008 Payroll

LFRyan Braun$455,000
RHPDave Bush$2.55 mil.
CFMike Cameron$6.25 mil.*
LHPChris Capuano (DL)$3.75 mil.
LHPRandy Choate (DL)$500,000
INFCraig Counsell$2.8 mil.
INF/OFJoe Dillon$393,000
1BPrince Fielder$670,000
RHPEric Gagne$10 mil.
RHPYovani Gallardo (DL)$404,000
OFGabe Gross$414,000
OFTony Gwynn$397,500
OFBill Hall$4.8 mil.
SSJ.J. Hardy$2.65 mil.
OFCorey Hart$444,000
OFGabe Kapler$800,000
CJason Kendall$4.25 mil.
RHPSeth McClung$750,000
RHPGuillermo Mota$3.2 mil.
LHPManny Parra$392,000
RHPDavid Riske$4 mil.
CMike Rivera$395,000
RHPBen Sheets$11 mil.
LHPBrian Shouse$2 mil.
RHPJeff Suppan$8 mil.
RHPSalomon Torres$3.2 mil.
RHPDerrick Turnbow$3.2 mil.
RHPCarlos Villanueva$413,000
2BRickie Weeks$1.056 mil.
Termination pay$885,246**
Total$80.02 mil.

*Cameron's pay includes a $1.25 million signing bonus. His pay will be docked during a 25-game suspension.

**The Brewers paid one-fourth of RHP Claudio Vargas' $3.6 million salary upon releasing him.

That's a lot of value for $80 million. I'd be curious to compare the Brewers' record to the Yankees when the season is over, especially at, what, one-third of the salary.

It's weird to think that Sheets, Suppan, and Gagne are making $29 million of our $80 million. Or that Weeks is making more than Fielder.

It is awesome

that Mark A. is willing to bring it up this high, and then say that there is money available to add someone at the deadline.

And I agree on the value part. You can't do too much better for $80 mil.

This is great

INF Craig Counsell $2.8 mil.

The guy who says the Brewers will be better the less he plays. Grit is a valuable skill.

Money turnover

Another good thing is the roughly $34 million going to guys who will be free agents after the season.

True, but...

A lot of those guys will have to be replaced, also on the FA market. I don't think we'll have an internal solution for CF (unless Hart or Braun moves to center and LaPorta is ready), which means we could end up spending double the money to keep Cameron. We're certainly not getting a catcher for much less than $5MM unless by some miracle Palmisano emerges.

All that said, though, definitely better to be freeing up money than not.

Also, cheese.

uh oh

That sounds like doubt about TGJ. Haven't you gotten the memo that he's changed his whole approach, and that he's the super-mega-awesome choice for center field?

by Marty McSuperFly on Mar 30, 2008 11:21 AM CDT up reply actions

another memo

super-mega-awesome doesn't win championships.

grit wins championships.

Also, cheese.

I would think

LaPorta will be ready- maybe they keep him at AAA until May like they did with Braun, in which case they could find a cheap platoon to cover while he's gone

I have a possibley irrational fear...

that Braun (LF), Hart (C) and LaPorta (RF) might constitute one of the worst defensive starting outfields in the majors.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Mar 30, 2008 4:55 PM CDT reply actions

Hart Catching? That's a novel concept

I understand though. However, I think LaPorta's a LF regardless- Braun would have to play right in that situation. But that would involve moving two guys again. Oh well, I can handle it if they mash like they usually do.
