Prince's Homerless Streak

As we're all too well aware, Prince Fielder remains without a home run in 2008. Some ascribe this to his new vegetarian lifestyle and others have pointed out his slow home run start last season. I thought I'd take another look at his struggles.

Dating back to the September 26 game last season, Prince has gone 13 games and 43 at bats without a home run. This is just over half the length (in games) of his longest homer drought: from September 1, 2005 to April 7, 2006, Prince didn't hit a round-tripper in twenty-four straight games. A look at that streak, though, reveals another possible reason for the power drain: he only batted more than once in eight of those games and only started six of them. It might just be he has trouble hitting for power as a pinch hitter. All in all, he only got 41 at bats in that 24-game stretch and had one at bat before his home run in the would-be twenty-fifth game.

Added to the trouble of having to pinch-hit is the fact he was 21 and still in his first go-round in the majors. Those aren't particularly great circumstances in which to hit in the first place, much less to mash the ball. There's no similar excuse for his second-longest streak by games (longest in terms of at bats). Last season, Prince went without a home run in 18 straight games from July 14 to July 31. He started all but one of those games and ended up with 65 at bats in them. Adding on the two final homerless at bats from the July 13 game, Prince went a total of 67 at bats without a home run before hitting one in the first inning of the August 1 game. Note that his current streak is just about two-thirds of the way to that mark.

In addition to his current streak, Prince has two other 13-game homerless streaks. From April 4 to April 19, 2007, he went 50 consecutive at bats without a home run in those thirteen games. He went homerless in his final two trips to the plate on April 3 and in his first two at bats on April 20, meaning he went 54 total consecutive at bats sans homer. His other streak was in the 2006 season from May 14 to May 28. Adding the three at bats after his home run on May 13 and the two before his home run on May 29 gives him 53 consecutive at bats in that span.

Here's his top ten homerless streaks in terms of at bats (Updated through 4/15/08 - 0 AB on 4/15):

1. July 13 - August 1, 2007, 67 AB
2. June 27 - July 16, 2006, 58 AB
3. September 26, 2007 - present, 55 AB
4. April 3 - April 20, 2007, 54 AB
5. May 13 - May 29, 2006, 53 AB
6. September 1, 2005 - April 8, 2006, 42 AB
      May 29 - June 10, 2006, 42 AB
      September 16 - September 29, 2006, 42 AB
9. April 29 - May 12, 2006, 40 AB
10. August 13 - August 24, 2006, 39 AB

The dates listed are often days he hit home runs. I've listed the streaks as starting (ending) then because he usually had at bats after (before) his home run on that day that began (ended) the streak. That's why it looks like his #4 streak and one of his #6 streaks could overlap - his home run on May 29 broke them into two separate streaks.

Still not too worried

Nice breakdown, though

perhaps

switching braun and fielder back to 3-4 respectively would help. I seem to remember prince playing much better in the 4 spot last season even prior to braun being called up and he assumed that spot full time. I would like to see his splits at 3 v. 4 from last season until that point.

by SunglassesAtNight on Apr 11, 2008 9:07 AM CDT   0 recs

for the whole season

batting 3rd: 262/345/524
batting 4th: 304/424/677

That sounds like the kind of math Ned would have on his side.

Plus, while I understand the reasoning of putting Braun behind Prince, batting Prince 4th would mean you're breaking up the lefties on days where Gross or Gwynn starts and bats second.

Also, cheese.

I heard

he's going to become a doughnutarian. Maybe that'll help.

So what I'm taking away from this...

Is this:

Last season, Prince had two homer droughts significantly longer than his current drought, and still hit 50 HR.

Not worried.

but...you don't understand!

he's on pace to hit ZERO HOMERS!

Also, cheese.

well

not sure if this has been posted anywhere else yet, but apparently PRince will be on good morning america in the morning to talk about being a vergiterian. Maybe Tiki Barber will ask him the hard-hitting questions we've all been wondering about,

by SunglassesAtNight on Apr 11, 2008 12:54 PM CDT   0 recs

hard-hitting questions:

"Has it been hard hitting?", "Why haven't you been hitting it hard?", or "Are vegetables responsible for your hardly hitting?"

by keephopealive on Apr 11, 2008 2:05 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It's time to stop kidding ourselves.

Today's game clinched it for me. Whether it's the vegetables, the pants, or whatever, it's clearly time to flip flop him in the order with the guy who's showing more power, a better average, and run-producing capability.

That's right, I'm talking about Gabe Kapler. Prince is on pace to hit 0 home runs and Kapler's on pace for over 40. I think we all know it's time to move Fielder to the #2 spot and Kapler to #3 so Braun can give Kapler some protection. If Ned doesn't see that, he's an idiot.

It wasn't, but hey, we've all been there. :)

Probably comes down to this: If Jeff writes that, they know he's joking, and it might be at least moderately funny. If I write that, I might be serious, and instead of funny it's just kind of sad.

Swing mechanics

I think his swing mechanics are screwed up. He looks like Kendall up there right now, just really off-balanced.

The past two games it has gotten better, but his hits have been the other way. I think eventually the hits will start going to center, then to right, then out of the park.

He'll be fine. If anything, it's the sad attempt at dreadlocks and the larger helmet he has to wear at the plate.

Well

It looks like the Jay has updated the post since it was initially posted on the 10 and the streak runs through the 12th. factoring in yesterday's 0-4 performance, however, he is not 0 for his last 59, making this the second-longest streak f his career.

Still no cause for concern?

by SunglassesAtNight on Apr 14, 2008 7:32 AM CDT   0 recs

Whoops

I forgot to change the date when I updated - the at bats (55) are right through the 13th, not the 12th. Sorry.

It's a little alarming

that his OBP is higher than his SLG. Maybe we should have him lead off?
