Hill Out of the Cubs Rotation?

Just a quick note here: Rich Hill might be bumped from the Cubs rotation.  He hasn't pitched well this year, and while the Cubs don't exactly have a lot of *quality* SP options, they do have options, namely Jon Lieber.

This may well just be a hiccup on Hill's way to being a solid major league pitcher, but if it's not, it's a major blow to the Cubs.  Lieber is ok as a 6th starter, but Hill was projected to provide a whole lot more than that this year.

My favorite line

was when they mentioned the Cubs "wealth" of starting pitching. I wouldn't consider Lieber to be part of a wealth of talent

A wealth of starting pitching

It's a measurement, like a murder of crows, or a pride of lines. I think a wealth of starting pitchers is 6 potential starting pitchers.

It said

"wealth of starting depth". If we're judging depth, then the Cubs have it, with Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Marquis, Dempster, Hart, Lieber, and Marshall all available as starting pitchers. Whether or not it's a "wealth of talent" is a different question, but it's not what the article said.

As for the major blow, Hill has made two starts this season. He may get back on track and he may not, but we can't tell which after just nine innings of 2008.

They moved too slow

...could have had Vargas. Wouldn't that have been fun?

Lilly hasn't been all that great either

Zambrano is variable, either great or laboring with walks, too many pitches and some HRs mixed in. Dempster could be their most consistent quality pitcher... and yes, I'm saying that with doubt.

On a Cubs related note, last nights game included a nice running catch by Fukudome (in center) and Soriano bumped into him and knocked the ball loose. Proved critical in their loss.

Featured Poll

Poll
Who is the Brewers' top prospect?
  • Brett Lawrie - Cana-DUH!
  • Mat Gamel - A great pure hitter who could potentially play a position of need.
  • Alcides Escobar - The Brewers sorely need his defensive wizardry and contact-hitting approach. He also solves the 3B hole by shifting J.J. over.
  • Jonathan Lucroy - The best catching prospect in the system by virtue of the fact that he can actually catch. His hitting numbers at Brevard are very good on the face of it, but even better after accounting for Space Coast Stadium.
  • Angel Salome - He's leading a Huntsville team that's loaded with prospects in all three slash stats, and he has the tools to be a good defensive catcher.
  • Jeremy Jeffress - The only real pitching prospect in a sea of hitters, Jeffress could potentially ease the pain of losing two aces by blossoming into one himself.
  • Carlos George - Hey, Derek Jeter can't play defense either.
