Sheets.
I don't like the sound of this:
It's really sore," Sheets said. "It's kind of up in that region, top of the triceps and near the lat that I injured a couple years ago.
"It's hard coaxing yourself through it, especially with me tearing it once before. I'm cautiously optimistic about how it feels tomorrow."
Sheets said the triceps felt better each day leading up to his start Friday, but that going into it, he was still hurting. It really flared up in the third inning during an at-bat by opposing pitcher Bronson Arroyo.
"That's when it felt the worst," Sheets said.
I won't engage in utter speculation regarding the nature of the injury, but those comments sound to me like he's about to miss a start. Or more.

Speculation from
http://www.disabledlistinformer.com/ says it might be a rotator cuff issue. But that guy’s kind of apocalyptic, I think every injury is either a severe rotator cuff injury or will require Tommy John surgery according to him.

The image link shows the triceps passes through the rotator cuff muscles at its attachment, that is, the end. If the nerve were to cause the sensation of stiffness that would be referred pain. It doesn’t seem logical to me that if the problem were rotater cuff “issues” or nerve impingement or damage, that he would go out and pitch in Cincy. I’m not an expert and that is uninformed speculation.
I also wonder how people can get advanced degrees and use headlines that say “less sliders.”

never overestimate advanced degrees
Many smart people have advanced degrees, but that doesn’t mean that people with advanced degrees are all smart :).
The more time you spend in academia (fortunately for me, not very much) the clearer that becomes.
Also, cheese.

to clarify
First off, thank you for reading!
When a nerve is irritated, it can create referred pain, but it does not have to extend far away from the site of the nerve entrapment. The nerve can be mildly inflamed and create a more localized sense of irritation. In this case, the stiffness is likely from the rotator cuff. This is called “Quarter Dollar Syndrome”, where the axillary nerve and rotator cuff are irritated and produce symptoms in the upper portion of the back of the shoulder.
I apologize about the headline of “less sliders” – “fewer” should have been used. After reading this, I can see how blatant an error this was. I will take note of this for future posts!

Hey thanks for stopping by
Could a person with “Quarter Dollar Syndrome” go out and pitch in a baseball game, and quite effectively as well?
Could throwing a new pitch, a change up (others have said it is a ‘circle change’), cause triceps or rotator cuff problems?

ol Pete,
Yes, a person with “quarter dollar syndrome” could pitch in a game, and do well. It really all comes down to the individual’s pain threshold/tolerance. Yes, a new pitch could create mechanical problems that lead to triceps or cuff problems.
Thank you for reading!

I did not say it was a severe rotator cuff injury. I was simply stating that often times, Triceps strains are misdiagnosed as a rotator cuff strain in the area of the quadrangular space.
I would agree that most times, I do have a stern outlook on what is really going on, but this is only because I see these injuries first hand on a daily basis in the clinic. Often times, we receive vague diagnoses that are, in actuality, something else.

paul wagner
yes, the former brewers pitcher, on the wssp post game show mentioned how during sheets opening start in chicago that sheets should have been taken out during the rain delay. he felt that since sheets couldn’t stay loose in chicago because there’s no room in the clubhouse or down below to play catch that it would be hazardous to sheets health and apparently predicted on the air, didn’t hear him personally say this at the time, that you’d see the after affects in his later starts.
this may just be speculation, but i found it interesting none the less.

Hopefully,
if he does go on the DL, the other pitchers won’t all press like last year. However, it sounds like he hurt it against the Mets, and we had a pretty tough starting pitching week already.

Besides all the obvious worries
that Ben is hurt again and we are not sure if he will miss his next start this is also just another reason for Yost to keep Bush on the Roster in a starting rotation. Damn, that guy is blessed. I wonder if he schuck away to NYC for a brief visit with the Pope and a quick blessing or something. Jeff you seen him hanging around the City per chance?

Weaver
Does anybody think Sheets’ soreness after his start against New York has anything to do with the Weaver signing this week?

Yes, now that its obvious they've known about it for a while.

Clearly
Someone needs to tell Sheets about the miracle drug Icy Hot.

With that out of the way, I think the fact that he pitched after the tightness is a good sign that it shouldn’t be that bad.
