(Post-)Game Thread #21
I don't know about you guys, but I was really suffering for want of a place to vent after Yost left Bush in to bat in the 6th only to remove him after Werth doubled to lead off the 7th.
Anyway, feel free to use this thread to talk about the game; belatedly, PRINCE!!!

Jinx
I thought BA and Rock totally jinxed the Crew when after scoring one run in the first inning they start talking about how we’ve rocked left-handers all year, now including Hamel. Then what does Hamel do? Completely shut down our offense for five innings. Luckily Braun and Prince got things back on track in the seventh, or else the blame for the loss would have been hung squarely on BA and Rock.
Anyone see the post-game show? I really liked the segment with Bruce Froemming. I thought the insight about the catcher and umpire talking was interesting.
Go Prince! Now he’s on pace for 24 HRs this year.
Boy, bad day for Rickie on defense. I liked that he was able to get to those balls to his left, though.
"My fellow nerds and I will retire to the nerdery with our calculators."
How the hell do you misspell Hamels and then nail Froemming?
Brian and Bill really got on my nerves falling all over themselves to cover up for Yost after botching the Bush thing. Really nice job by Stetter to get through two innings at the heart of Philly’s order, though it is lefty-heavy. Kinda sad that everyone is so excited about Turnbow getting through Bruntlett/Taguchi/Werth/Feliz, but hey, I’ll take it.
He's extremely quick and good.
Let-down
It is like how you can give up a lead-off double to the pitcher and then come back and strike out the top three in the order. I must have been amped up for the challenge of Froemming and been complacent about spelling Hamel(s).
Another thing about the telecast I didn’t like was how Rock praised the fans for being such good fans when former players come to Miller Park. That’s a crock. Very few former players get applause. Jenkins and Cirillo are the only ones who come to mind. But then these same “great fans” go and boo Carlos Lee. Why boo Carlos? He was great for us and then WE traded him. I sorta understand the booing for Cordero. But what about Victor Santos? I was there when the crowd booed him when he came in for relief, the year after he was one of our starters. Sure, he kinda sucked, but he never bad-mouthed the team or anything or looked like he wasn’t trying. He was just a below-average player, that’s all.

Bush in the 6th
I had no problem with leaving Bush in to hit there. No right handers on the bench (obviously not counting Rivera), he handles the bat okay, the pen is bushed, runner not in scoring position… Then in the 7th anything but a lead-off double and you probably leave him in there. But w/ a runner in scoring position and lefties coming up, you had to go with Stetter.
Bullpen
Only 5 teams in the NL had used their bullpen LESS than the Brewers going into last night.

I was wondering about McClung. He hasn’t thrown much. He threw one inning the night before, but he’s a former starter and he seems to throw easy heat if that makes any sense.
That Bush decision
was retarded. I would rather have a lefty off the bench hit than a pitcher. Plus, Bush has a track record of blowing up in the 6th and 7th innings and there were a ton of lefties coming up. On a positive note, I updated my signature!
Good time for Prince's fourth homer
Yeah, but
They’ve also played a bunch of extra inning games recently. The bullpen has had to cover four innings per game for the past week. Leaving Bush in to hit reeks of bad roster management (14 pitchers and no non-catcher righties on the bench), but the pen has had to work a lot recently.

Turnbow quote speaks for all of us
“There are a lot of emotions going through me right now. I’m both relieved and excited. A mix of everything. I couldn’t believe I got a save. I can’t really describe it.”
Apparently
Turnbow’s last save was exactly a year ago, April 23 at Chicago. Looks like he’s settled in at a solid 1 save/year pace.
"My thing is that you guys eat meat all day and you can't hit a ball. That's my thing." - P. Fielder
You have to love Charlie Manuel
"When the guy hit the double, I definitely was going to leave him in there on Fielder," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "Fielder had a good at-bat. He fouled off some pitches, and he got him. But at the same time, I liked (Hamels), I still liked him in the game. I liked him there, and I wanted him to stay there."I’m pretty sure the other 28 managers in baseball have heard of Ryan Braun
He's extremely quick and good.
Favorite part of the game:
Fielder’s two home runs, or the Jenkins standing ovation?
Ned Yost's Brewers: Braun Over Brains
Bush v Hamels
Gettin a win from that is a big woohoo.
I followed a couple of Phils forums. What a bunch of knobs. It reminded me of high school as the pudgy girl walked down the hallway. Non-stop insults. And a bunch of pics of women with breast augmentation – I guess I’m one of those people who don’t get it.
Does anyone know the rule Rock referred to that would allow the umpire to call an out when Bartman redux grabbed that ball?
No.
Personally, I think he’s full of crap. I’m sure Jay will enlighten us if Rock is right. I thought the crowd was surprisingly kind to that guy and I was pleased to see that Jenkins got an ovation.
I also like Fielder’s post-game quote (from JSonline): ”... my thing is a lot of people in the stands and you guys eat meat all day (and) you can’t hit a ball.”
And the award for least honest quote from a manager in a post-game news conference goes to Ned Yost (speaking of Turnbow): “I have faith in him, and as long as I have faith in him, he doesn’t have to worry about nothin’.” Apparently when Ned Yost has faith in you, you make only 3 appearances in 15 days and then only when the team significantly behind, and you only get used in crucial spots after you complain to the media and virtually the entire bullpen is unavailable due to arm fatigue.
Can you believe they left Hamels in for the 8th when he was already over 100 pitches and almost all of Philly’s vaunted pen was available?

Fielder
I like how when FSN cut to commercial after the inning with his second home run he mouthed “No meat! No meat!” at the camera.
I think Rock was making stuff up. Maybe if the batting team’s dugout interfered with a catch the umpire could call an out, but I don’t think it matters for fans. An umpire could toss a fan from the game, I guess.

I missed Fielder doing that.
That’s awesome.

If the ball is in play
and a fielder would have clearly recorded an out except for the fact a fan reached into play and interfered with the fielder then the umpire can call the batter out. It is akin to the interference rule on a double play. Very rarely is it ever called for the home team, even less when you are backhanding a pop-up at the wall while on the move.

Brewers' Struggles With Bush on the Mound
I think it’s my fault, guys.
Each week, a friend and I get together to watch a game, and each week it’s just happened to be when Bush is on the mound.
Last night we were both running late from work, so by the time we got done grilling and sat down in front of the TV, it was 3-0, and Bush had just cruised through the two easy innings. Over the next six innings, the Phillies outscored the Crew 4-0. My little guy was getting cranky so my wife and I left to put him to bed. We’d be gone no more than three minutes, and my buddy called and said Prince just hit another homer. So I missed every good part of the game. grrrrr

Struggles?
Once again, he pitched “great.” /sarcasm
I wish I saved all the quotes from Bulldog’s appearances. Last night allowing 4 runs in 6 puts him a notch below Sheets according to all the love in the postgame.
Hardly a ringing endorsement
In the JS story:
Brewers starter Dave Bush, a fill-in for a hurting Ben Sheets, gave his bullpen just enough of a rest and did exactly what was asked of him, throwing six innings and allowing four runs to keep the Brewers within striking distance.

I think everyone knows how Yost feels
Both from what Yost says and your making sure to point it out as much as possible.

Bush
At least we didn’t lose this game. After the 0-3 start, I was worried that he was coming down with Cappyitis
Just a quick note on Fielder's awesomeness
After a real slow start Fielder now has a .391 OBP and a .850 OPS. While The slugging is still down everything else is basically in line with his insane year last year. He now is at 14 walks and 14 strikeouts. Compare that to some other Brewers: Braun 19/3, Hart 18/5, Weeks 18/11, Hall 26/2(!), and even Hardy 12/7 and Fielder comes out looking real good. He is on pace for just over 100 K’s this year (Howard is on pace for 235!). Please Doug, get that man a long term contract if at all possible.
So let's be Cubs fans for a moment...
...and assume that the last two games are the true indicator of Fielder’s abilities. Fielder will definitely hit .714 the rest of the way with an OPS of 2.35. And he’ll finish with somewhere around 140 home runs and 360 RBI.
That aside, the BB/K rates for the rest of the team is horrible. It’s hard to even see Hall come to the plate these days.

I don't know if you saw the postgame
but they talked with Froemming and he said that umps get a “disc” the day after they pitch that shows how well they did, based on Questec I think. He said that umps were up to 95% accuracy. When Rock asked him about increasing the number of parks from the Questec 12-14, he said something about another system and putting it in all parks.
Details may be wrong…
That's all accurate
As for what was said during Froemming’s segment. Definitely sounded like something better than Questec was in the works.
Although I thought he said the accuracy was well over 95%.
