Game Thread #23: Marlins (13-9) at Brewers (13-9)
Suffice to say that while the records are the same, these teams are very different. For instance, all of their center fielders are young and gritty, and the overall salary of their bullpen is less than what's in my jar of coins.
The matchup for the opener tonight at 7:05 CT is Scott Olsen vs. Yovani Gallardo. It's tough not to get excited about a Gallardo start, and while Olsen is off to a good start, his 2007 ERA of 5.81 promises good things for Brewers fans as well.
Here's the BR Game Preview. Project-a-tron is down for site maintenance.
Go Brewers!

Can one be both young and gritty?
I thought grit was much like ear hair, it doesn’t really show up until your thirties.
Olsen's 2008
he’s had a pretty easy road—WAS twice, ATL, PIT. He pitched very well against the Braves, which is saying something, but the rest of it…eh.
Also, cheese.
Uhoh
Didn’t those things pretty much curse us last year?
"My plan is my plan," Yost said.
Over Under Fun
1: 7 innings pitched – Gallardo
2: 6 innings pitched – Olsen
3: 2 hits – Kendall
4: 0.5 stolen bases – Hart
5: 10 – Number of times BA & Rock say “He got a good/bad jump”
6: 0.5 throws in the dirt – Weeks
7: 5 runs scored- Brewers
8: 2 homeruns – Brewers
9: 1.5 at bats – Counsell
10: 1.5 errors – Brewers

I started up gameday
thought I’d check the Flubbies – and Johnny Estrada is up to bat!
lined out… 5 pitches

Gabe Gross just walked to load the bases
He’s 0-3 with two BBs so far as a Ray.
He's extremely quick and good.
What 38 yr old former Brewers RP...
is still pitching in the minors for Round Rock?
Still playing…

Holy crap
I can’t believe Weeks tagged on that. I actually thought as Amezaga released the ball so quickly, “Too bad, Rickie could have tagged on that.”
He's extremely quick and good.
Lotsa flyballs
6 up 6 fly ball outs

Gallardo
It’s like he’s a “pop up” pitcher. That seemed to be how many of the Reds were getting out.
Yup
Hart
as your fantasy baseball manager…I give you the green light to steal

LaPorta facing uber-prospect Clayton Kershaw tonight; flied out in his first AB.
He's extremely quick and good.
on my list for 1 year +
has been to run the numbers on minor leaguers (and college players, I suppose) against some subset of highly-ranked prospects.
maybe now would be a good time to start :).

Elbow UP, dude.

random question
today’s js online blog post started a big discussion among my friends over the kendall batting 9 . are there any stats anywhere that show i) with the pitcher batting 8, the avg. number of innings the 9 spot leads off v. the 1 spot, and ii) avg. no. of at-bats per game for the 2, 3 and 4 batters – again with the pitcher at 8

great play by Hall
and not too bad of a dig by Prince
Can't pitch Gagne in rain. He’s like the B-2 bomber of baseball.--TheJay
It was a nice dig by Prince, which is a welcome sight
Prince sucking at scooping balls combined with Weeks insisting on putting everything in the dirt spells trouble.
He's extremely quick and good.
Josh Butler had a good Brewers debut
4 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 4 K for High-A Brevard County.

The Manatees are facing former first-rounder Jeff Allison; I had no idea he was still in baseball. Apparently he kicked the heroin again.

Olsen...
...let’s at least make him sweat a little out there.
Do Umpires actually...
know which pitchers throw more strikes and then in turn call more strikes for those pitchers? I’ve never understood what the “rock” just said to be true. Do umpires actually follow all the pitchers and how often they throw strikes?

Gallardo
Marlins look like a bunch of free swingers, so hopefully Gallardo can keep the ball down a little more.

he would’ve gotten thrown out. the ball got to the wall that fast.

Just Curious
Is there a way using Baseball-Reference or some other site to see what players on a teammate have been teammates on other teams.
For example, Kendall caught Shouse in AAA in ‘95, and I believe Kendall would have caught Torres at some point too.
Yeah, Torres actually didn't like Kendall
Rock talks about it every other game, about how now Torres admits Kendall was “right”, whatever that means.
He's extremely quick and good.
I think baseball cube has a "top teammates" list or somehting
but not as complete as what you’re talking about.
it would be an easy thing to do for major leaguers, not so much for minor leaguers back more than a few years.

Drawing a blank
Who’s that hitter from the 60s-80s, normally considered a Cub, considered a jerk, but played for so many teams that he was going to go into Copperstown with a hat with all the teams logos on…
He could be baseball’s Steve Buscemi
hmmm
are you thinking of bill madlock? dave kingman?
fergie jenkins is the only HOFer who fits the profile, i don’t know if he was considered a jerk though, and he wasn’t a hitter.

Jew Power!

And again hitting lefties quite well
I have to believe that is a good sign for him going forward. I seem to remember most of the big power guys that fizzle out early as not being able to hit lefties well.

117 pitches for YoGa

Relieving Clayton Kershaw
...Tanyon Sturtze! Just a bit of a difference in stuff.

20?
How much possible strain can it put on your arm throwing 73 sidearm?
He's extremely quick and good.
If we don't score this inning
it must be close to some sort of record for getting a lead off guy on and not scoring
I just started listening late, but
have the Crew completely refused to move that lead-off guy over like they did in this inning? WTF!?
Could a fan have gotten in there?
the other day some fans backed off to let the other team catch a ball?
I have faith in Gallardo and all
but no way I expected this to be scoreless for longer than about two innings.
Also, cheese.
Also
It’s got Gagne things going against it
1. It’s wet
2. He hasn’t pitched in a few days
3. It’s not a save situation
it is eerie how many extra inning games we've played
since going to >12 pitchers.

Top of the order for the fish
I want Stetter up in case things gets dicey and the big lefties for the marlins come up.
So, this trend of extra-innings games is going to correct itself, right?
I’m waiting for the regression to the mean to kick in so we can go a month without putting exta innings on the pen…
