Bush Sent to Nashville

From the JS Blog:
The Brewers cleared a spot on their roster for the return Tuesday of centerfielder Mike Cameron by optioning right-hander Dave Bush to Class AAA Nashville.

To say the least, Bush was stunned when told after the game today that he was going down.

"I didn't have much choice in the matter," he said. "No one prefers to to to the minors."
I guess this means Sheets is 100% going to make the start on Tuesday. I'm surprised Bush was the guy sent down, but not displeased. I hope Manny Parra rewards the team's faith in him by going a full six innings at some point.

Attitude

It seems like Bush was mad about being sent down to Nashville. Compare that to Wes Obermueller back in 2004:

Obermueller took the setback positively.

“It’s something they knew I need and something I know I need,” he said. “If I have a more consistent rate I think I’ll have more consistent pitching, and more confidence.

“They know I’ll work hard. I’ve got some goals to accomplish here.”

I’d rather see a guy be upset about being sent down than saying, “I needed this.”

Ill take what Obermueller said

I like a guy that can admit his faults and understand his need to get better.

It doesn’t show a weakness to admit one’s problems. That sentence was for a certain manager or for a certain president.

not too happy

i definately thouhgt Bush should have been the odd man out of the rotation once we had everyone healthy, but this is ridculous. what happens now when Sheets goes out in the 3rd inning on tuesday?

by SunglassesAtNight on Apr 27, 2008 6:51 PM CDT   0 recs

Presumably McClung comes in as the long reliever

Stetter is the only reliever that has options, I think, so if it wasn’t Bush being sent down, it would’ve been him.

among relievers, yes

though of course villa or parra could be sent down.

Even if Sheets does have a short start, we do have SEVEN relievers still … one per inning the rest of the way, and if-g-d forbid-sheets is hurt, we can bring bush right back up.

Also, cheese.

Damn

So we’re basically straight-jacketed with an excess of mediocre relievers on the major league roster? It suck to have to send Bush down, even though he could probably be used as a more effective long reliever than McClung, because of options.

agreed

I think McClung should have been sent down. I realize he’s out of option, but if he were to get claimed, so what?

by SunglassesAtNight on Apr 27, 2008 9:10 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm shocked.

Really I am. Though maybe I shouldn’t be. I thought Ned would veto the idea of sending Bush out without much thought, leaving Parra the odd man out of the rotation and likely headed for AAA. I would prefer having him in the pen as the long reliever to McClung, or even in addtion to McClung instead of keeping TBow around as a virtually useless 25th man. Given the lack of options among the relievers, and Ned’s Bush love, I assumed that Parra would get the boot when he couldn’t make it out of the 5th today. I like keeping Parra in the rotation though.

Shocked, 2

The obvious “odd man out’ is. . . should be. . . must be. . . . Turnbow.
It’s clear he has lost the confidence of Ned (despite what he may say—-actions speak louder than words).
Do YOU want him pitching in a close game?
Didn’t think so.

Cut him loose.
The Pirates just ate $11 mil by saying good bye to Matt Morris.
The Brewers should say bye to Derrick Turnbow.

I wonder if its just move one of a two part move

Maybe Turnbow will still end up gone and this is just the one that is announced first because they’re trying to wangle something with another reliever.

by battlekow on Apr 27, 2008 7:57 PM CDT   0 recs

there's a gentleman's agreement

amongst GMs to not claim guys off of waivers that still have options left, or so I am told. Otherwise the system would get clogged up with players getting put on waivers, a team claiming him, and his old team deciding to put him back on the major league roster. If he is out of options, however, it is another story.

Just occurred to me.

Looking at the bigger picture, we should be very, very pleased with what the FO and/or Yost have done.

Right now, for the first time all year, we’re counting on all of our starters to be healthy the next time through the rotation. The brain trust didn’t have to make this decision all at once, but they’ve chosen Gallardo, Villanueva, and Parra over the vets. It’s temporary, sure, and Bush didn’t make the decision that hard, but still…if you had told me they would have made this call by May 1, I wouldn’t have believed you. I would’ve guessed Bush would be in the rotation and after all of the set-up shenanigans, Villa would be pitching short relief.

Sort of like the pitcher-batting-8th business, I don’t know that choosing Parra over Bush makes much of a difference, but I really like having a manager/GM/whatever that is willing to make that choice. Can you imagine Lou or Dusty doing that?

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 27, 2008 9:06 PM CDT   0 recs

Well, I like having a FO that is willing to make the right decision, even if it's a tough one

Is Parra a better bet to help the team win than Bush? I think probably, but then you have to ask if Bush is better than any of the members of our million-man bullpen army; I think it’s pretty obvious that he is, so I’m not really willing to give the FO that big of a pat on the back yet. I want to see what they do with Turnbow, and how soon they do it.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Apr 27, 2008 9:18 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Turnbow has put them in a tough spot, and no mistake.

It’s certainly not an easy thing to eat his salary by letting him go. There’s probably just enough evidence presented by his recent save to allow their obvious emotional attachment to TBow to delay the possibility of simply cutting him loose. I can understand that given the force he was for this team a couple of years back. This move seems to me like it may be an attempt to delay the inevitable in that they can maintain control over all of the pitchers on their 40 man by sending a guy with an option left down instead of having to actually cut someone outright. That may not result in them having the best staff in Milwaukee right now, but from the FO’s perspective, it allows them to extend their control over this entire group for a while longer in case an injury crops up.

I don’t know that I buy that argument myself, but there’s some logic there, I guess. The problem remains, however. Sooner or later TBow will have to regain his effectiveness and consistency, or he’ll have to be cut (assuming there’s no interest). They can’t keep this many pitchers forever, particularly when one of them is a guy you’re afraid to use.

another consideration

bush is going back to the minors to start, meaning that he’s insurance right now, and insurance that is pretty badly needed.

if he was shifted to the bullpen, he’d either be
a) a long man who couldn’t be used very often, or
b) a short guy who would need to be stretched out before his next start

In a), you have someone worth no more than Dbow and worth less than mcclung, and in b), you have chris narveson as next in line to replace sheets.

You’re right, there are more decisions to be made, but in the short term, I’m convinced this is the right one.

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 27, 2008 9:34 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I don’t see why Bush couldn’t operate like Villaneva last year and provide rotation insurance while also providing value out of the bullpen. I just think it’s a shame to have Bush in AAA for any portion of what promises to be an extremely tight, year-long pennant race.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Apr 27, 2008 9:44 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

point taken

but that still leaves us with the problem of stretching him out, which I suspect is most important in the short term as we see whether sheets is really over this latest malady.

Villa had a few long-ish outings last year, but he only made the one spot start. (Though looking at the game log, that may just be because we didn’t ever need him to. Amazing we got through the season with only 8 starters.) There were times he could’ve, but only because at times he was used very sporadically. The better corollary to 2008 Bush, I think, is 2008 McClung, and I’m not at all sure I’d rather have Bush in the pen than McC.

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 27, 2008 9:50 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

i agree with battlekow

we need that long-relief/spot starter on our roster and would like to see him used as such. I would much rather have him in our pen than mcclung. when one of our starters is having an off night and has to come out early, would you honestly rather get one inning each out of torres, riske, turnobow, mcclung than 3-4 out of Bush? i wouldn’t. and it’s not even really that close

by SunglassesAtNight on Apr 27, 2008 10:21 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

but we *can* get 3-4 out of mcclung.

and ned isn’t afraid to use him that way.

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 27, 2008 10:29 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I wouldn't be surprised if Bush fails in AAA

McClung can go multiple innings. Friday or so on WSSP, Melvin made a comment about McClung’s role still being determined and also mentioned that he had pitched for the Brewers in the minors as a starter.

What does that mean? I dunno.

by ol Pete on Apr 27, 2008 10:30 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I know you really hate Bush and all that

But you really think he’ll fail at AAA? Two words: Ben Hendrickson.

by battlekow on Apr 27, 2008 10:50 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I said I wouldn't be surprised

I doubt he’ll do well though. Don’t follow the Hendrickson thing.

by ol Pete on Apr 27, 2008 11:57 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Hendrickson being a great example of the difference between AAA the Majors

AAA hitters kept swinging at his curve. ML hitters took it for balls and he was screwed. I’m pretty sure Dave Bush will do fine in Nashville.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Apr 28, 2008 12:36 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Hendrickson

I really don’t think they should’ve used him at all as a starter. If I recall correctly he had some good bullpen outings and then they threw him in there and he stunk.

I like it

I agree with Jeff because this move sets our best rotation.
If another injury to the rotation occurs then obviously they will be forced make another move. The bullpen is another issue that will also work itself out over the next few weeks. There are going to be games (blowouts, extra innings) in which they must use McClung and Turnbow. If those guys don’t perform then I bet they won’t get many more chances, and in that scenario Bush is probably back as the long man.

Will Brad Nelson give up #31 to Dave Bush or will Bushie have to adjust to a different uniform number as well?

Mgl hates the move.

http://www.insidethebook.com/ee/index.php/site/article/what_do_teams_use_to_evaluate_pitchers/

But this guy gets sent down to the minors. On a team that is clearly in contention. Do they have any idea that he has been a decent to good major league starter for over 4 years now? Did he lose his velocity or break into the clubhouse kitchen and steal some sodas?

Seriously, how can a half billion dollar business not be able to recognize that one of their employees is and has been for many years as solid as you can get without being a star. There is NOTHING in his performance record that indicates that he is anything but.

Bring Back The Old Logo!

by jacob on Apr 29, 2008 11:24 AM CDT   0 recs

I'm actually disappointed in MGL here

I completely agree with his point that Bush is an average starter, has a proven track record, and would probably continue as such.

But that’s not the question. All that matters in terms of who should be starting for this team are six guys: our current five plus Bush. Is Bush demonstrably better than Sheets, Suppan, Villa, Parra, or Gallardo? Maybe, but that’s a MUCH thornier issue than he makes it out to be.

Statheads are supposed to have moved beyond a simple, context-neutral idea of replacement level by now.

(Of course, whether Bush should be in the MLB bullpen instead of AAA rotation is a different argument.)

Also, cheese.
