Just got home

great to see the crew kicking butt, but the stat line on Sheets has me worried: 4 runs and 7 (!) walks in 5 innings. Did it look like he was pitching hurt or compensating? Is there reason to think this triceps is more serious than we thought?

by keephopealive on Apr 29, 2008 9:47 PM CDT reply actions

It seemed like he might be hurt

But then again the 40 degree weather could be playing a role too. This has to be the most walks in Sheets’ career, anybody have the stats to confirm that?

by battlekow on Apr 29, 2008 9:52 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't see anything to make me think he aggravated his shoulder...

... but I don’t think that matters. My guess is his shoulder feels pretty close to the way it did when they pulled him. His control was poor early, but I thought it actually got better as the night went on. The strike zone was tight low in the zone, which cost him a couple of strikeouts, and one of the runs and at least one of the walks came after errors fom Prince and Hall.

I don’t like that they ran him out there for 108 pitches, and I wish they would have sat him down after that long break after the 2nd. But I didn’t see any sign of a new injury…

Big question

What’s the condition of the pitcher’s mound? Did it have a manicure recently?

Just got back from Wrigley...

I’m a Brewers fan in Chicago and just got home after leaving a 9-4 game (it’s cold and I have to get up at 5am and I’m going tomorrow – that was just to make me feel better). As a Brewers fan whose gone to many games at Wrigley the last few years, I must say that there are a lot of Brewers fans that enter this stadium and become stupid.

Maybe it’s the luck of the draw on my seats, but never see Brewers fans act so stupid at Milller Park. Whose been to Wrigley lately? What do you think?

I used to live in Wrigleyville

Always tried to be cool. Never put up with any crap, but didn’t really give it either.

Never saw much obnoxiousness personally.

Class Cub Fan Comment Of The Game

from the other BCB:

“does anyone think sheets looks like a fag with his long sleeves that dont reach his wrists? Devin Hester, you are rediculous! -Jeff Joniak

by ARAM FOR MVP on Apr 29, 2008 11:33 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs”

Sheets was the second person whose sexuality was questioned during the game over at the other BCB. There was much infighting, including an 8 post (or so) exchange over whether it was appropriate to announce you were leaving before you did so. Interestingly, the poster who previously insisted he was leaving because the Cubs suck, and who then insisted it was OK to announce he was leaving via post, never left.

To be fair to the more rational posters over there, the comment about Sheets drew several condemnations in the thread, and I’m pretty sure the guy got flagged more than once for his efforts…

Cub Fan

On the other BCB, a fan created a post that complained about other fans disrespecting the cubs. I think it had to do with the picture at the top of the page.

I added my thoughts on the subject, which will probably lead to my banning on that site.

Obviously I'll admit...

... that I cruise through the other BCB’s game threads when the Cubs play the Brewers, mostly because I always find something that makes me laugh, and also because I’m a bitter guy. But I’ve never posted over there. It seems to me the best practice is to leave them to their own devices and hope they leave us to ours. The infighting in the threads at that site, which I’ll admit I find amusing (tonight was particularly funny), would be enough to drive me from that site if I were a Cub fan. There also is ALWAYS a comment or two like the one I posted above, which doesn’t seem to happen here (at least not to that extreme). That may be because there are just fewer people hitting this site than those who hit the other BCB every gamethread.

I don’t like it when they troll over here, so I choose not to troll over there. It seems like the best practice. I don’t mind cwyers so much because he generally has intelligent things to add to the thread, but occasionally even he comes over here with the obvious intent to annoy. I don’t do that and my effort to avoid doing so has resulted in my simply never posting there at all (mostly because I know myself well enough to know that even if I posted there with good intentions I’d end up being irritating), the idea being if I don’t post there, I won’t irritate them. BUT, if they want to come over here, read our gamethread and get offended, there’s nothing I can do about that, and that’s their problem. Not mine. As I said, I cruise their gamethreads too, periodically, but instead of getting righteously indignant about it, I do it for laughs and maybe the occasional rueful shake of the head.

Thanks for pointing out that the homophobic comment was almost universally condemned.

And you’re also right about the ledgejumpers who crawl out of the woodwork whenever the Cubs happen to be trailing (“which happens a lot”, just to pre-empt). Some people just refuse to make the effort to be positive and almost always roundly derided for doing so. You’d think every loss signaled the coming apocalypse by some of the comments over here. But hey, they care about the team, so I guess I can’t really judge the ways they do so. But I can disagree.

Good game last night, here’s hoping we get you guys tonight.

Sorry, but the acceptable answer would've been
Fans of other teams hate Cubs fans because we’re the most PASSIONATE and dedicated fans in baseball. Those other losers can’t carry a Cubs fans jockstrap when it comes to cheering the home team. Sure, we boo sometimes but it’s only because we’re jaded over the years of getting so close but being so far from a championship and knowing theirs always next year. They all wish their team could have won 10000 games but we did it first and we will cheer them for 10000 more wins because we’re the best fans in the game and everyone else is just jealous of our tradition and history and the respect and honor that comes from wearing Cubbie blue. Maybe if they all grew up and learned what it’s like to obsess about a team for your ENTIRE lief, they’d know what it is to be a real fan.
