Brewers Centerfield

I'm a Red Sox fan but I enjoy watching the Brewers young talented team and will try and watch them as much as I can this season. Theres one thing that I noticed that would have helped both the Sox and the Brewers. I don't understand why The Brewers wouldn't be all over a guy like Coco Crisp. He has a very friendly contract, 3 years/$15.5M (2007-09), plus $8M 2010 club option, much better than MIke Camerons 1 year/$7M (2008), plus $10M 2009 club option. The Brewers don't seem too need more power with Fielder, Braun, and Hart. Coco brings outstanding defense and a number 1 or 2 switch hitter with great speed. I think once hes gone from Boston his numbers should get  better offensively. I know Tony Gwynn Jr. is there but if hes platooning with Kapler then he may or may not be the answer. The Red Sox need pitching with Schilling gone and are looking to trade Crisp to get Ellsbury in there. Claudio Vargas was out right released and has been a very good player for the Brewers. You would have thought the moment that Schilling went down, the Brewers must have known by then they wanted to go with the youth movement with their starters, they would have inquired about Crisp.  Also Mike Cameron brings some baggage with the suspension for steroids so who knows how good he will be when he returns. A team like the Mets would kill for a Mike Cameron right now with all their outfield injuries and the Brewers could get some middle relief help to bolster that staff. It seems like a win win for both sides I don't get it.

Crisp

I doubt the Red Sox would have traded Crisp for one or even two of surplus starters when we had them all. I think after this season the Brewers will look for Laporta or Gywnn to be the third outfielder. Cameron's contract also significantly less because of the suspension and it was for a stimulant not steroids. Crisp probably would have been a good fit though before Cameron was signed if the asking price was reasonable. I think it's also unlikely that they pick up Cameron's option unless Gywnn proves that he is just a fourth outfileder at best.

Melvin

I think from Melvin's perspective, a three year contract is worse than a slightly larger one year one. With the shorter contracts, it's easier to not have to worry about an injury hurting your team for a few years.

In addition, the Brewers have several good prospects that could be in the outfield within a year.

Cameron seems to fit what the Brewers are looking for from their players this year, someone who takes a lot of pitches, can run, has decent OBP and can also hit for power.

Also, the numbers Vargas puts up are very misleading.

Its only a 2 year contract its 07-09 07 is over. Anyone can get injured at anytime.

Tony Gwynn Jr

He and Coco are quite comparable, and TG jr. is younger. Im guessing Melvin never even thought about Crisp.

you lost me at

" Claudio Vargas...has been a very good player for the Brewers"

plus ops's of 77 and 83 the last two years for crisp...in an offensive league and on an offensive team...no thanks.

I like Coco Crisp

because he has one of the coolest names in the Major Leagues, but I still think Cameron is better (or comparable) offensively and certainly better defensively. Additionally, the one year contract is much more appealing since it helps clear the outfield for Laporta in a couple of years. Not to mention the fact that Vargas has the trade value of a bag of peanuts...

Well...

considering I just paid $.99/lb for peanuts at Pick N Save today...Yeah, I'd say that's about Claude's trade value.
