Game Thread #27: Brewers (15-11) at Cubs (16-10)
Tonight at 7:05 CT, it's Jeff Suppan vs. Ryan Dempster. Both starters have overperformed so far, and both starters are going to face a good offense tonight.
Project-a-tron sees this as a very even matchup:
- Brewers: 5.5
- Cubs: 5.3
- Brewers WinExp: 47.5% (home field swings it back in the Cubs favor)
Go Brewers!

Wasn’t he the umpire who took over for Crawford behind home plate last night? He’s back there again.

Lineup
good to see the same lineup 2 nights in a row. I guess even Ned knows how to ride the hot lineup
Good time for Prince's fifth homer
That glove rotation move
is strange and I would think distracting.

Derek Lee

"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."
he was running
the opposite way to the base. Not the easiest play
Good time for Prince's fifth homer
That's true
But he keeps getting to balls and failing to even knock them down.
He's extremely quick and good.
He was running to second
but that is the wrong way to make the play. As the boys on ESPN pointed out his footwork was incorrect on the play. Basic stuff for a guy in the majors.
The Wallbangers won because they played the game like kids! Let's do that again!!!
He went straight
to the bag to cover the running going. “straight” in the sense in that hge stepped directly towards 2B.
I am sure he has been taught to play the ball first. With a runner going and having to cover the bag a 2nd baseman should take his first steps towards the batter so that in case the ball is put in play (like here) he is moving to the ball and still in position to make the play. If the ball is not put in play he then slides to his right to cover the bag for the throw from Kendall. Looking from above the path to second would be in the shape of an “L” not a straight line.
If the ball is put in play to him, with the correct footwork as noted above, he is moving towards the ball and makes the play, probably a DP in this case.
His mistake was taking a series of steps directly towards the bag, leaving a hole and being unprepared to play the ball. You teach to play the ball first then cover the bag.
The Wallbangers won because they played the game like kids! Let's do that again!!!
They should have had Lee at second
Damn. Theriot somehow failed to score from second on a double.

Yep

Many teams use AAA as a holding tank for possible roster fodder
But judging by precedent set with Fielder, Weeks, Hardy & Braun, most guys are going to at least catch a couple hundred ABs in Nashville.
LaPorta and Gillespie, being “old”, have the best chance of getting jumped directing from Huntsville to Milwaukee, if Corey Hart or Ryan Braun goes down for a significant amount of time and the team doesn’t want to use a guy like Brendan Katin.

Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
"completely" and a "good month"

But like I said – extremely able and performing well are relevant.
Extremely able?
I guess I don’t see how he’s “extremely able.” That’s just the potential that’s had everyone drooling over him pitching poorly in his MLB career.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
pitching poorly and pitching well aren't the same thing
I sure don’t want to go back and forth about the definitions of ability, performance or potential, especially when this is probably more about him taking up a roster spot that you want for Dave Bush.
Huh?
”...this is probably more about him taking up a roster spot that you want for Dave Bush.”
Aren’t you the guy who bitches about people putting words in your mouth? If you think Seth McClung has been a quality MLB pitcher in his career, that’s fine for you, but it’s just one more example of why I have trouble taking a lot of your opinions on players seriously.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Excuse me for not understanding why.
I also don’t get why McClung is a quality pitcher now.
Is it because he had a couple scoreless outings in a row? That’s the same sort of cherry-picking crap that leads to saying Eric Munson is a streaky hitter because he went 12-20 in six games once in his major league career.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Is there some reason you're on this crusade?
Seriously, pick another guy to go against the crowd on, already.
I don’t care if they call up Bush to replace McClung or not. There’s a reason guys like McClung or Bush are at the back of the bullpen: they’re not very good.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
lol
I tried to talk to you about it, but you don’t want to. The crusade is yours not mine. I’m shocked you say Bush isn’t very good. What about his K/9 and BB/9 over his career of course, we don’t want to isolate this year with some cherry picking crap.
You know...
Just because someone has a good game or even a couple doesn’t mean that they’re great players.
Their long-run stats are gonna give more of a hint at what type of player they are, not one game or even one year.
I don’t see why this being an issue you you Pete.
"Brett Favre looks like a man in a parking lot playing with boys." - John Madden
"great player" - your words not mine
How about 3? Seven? A year? How does it work? And isn’t it more important to win games this year?
Here's why that philosophy can be wrong
Just one example, but take a look at what this guy did in 2006. He was a good hitter then. But he regressed back to the type of production he usually had
Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"

But I’m not sure I can, since so many of them regard the Brewers as beside the point this year with the Cardinals posing the real threat. If we’re not a real rival, there’s no need to gloat, I guess.

Suppan was near that pace too... 92 in 3 2/3 IP.

Marmol?
really?
I guess Lieber worked yesterday, but this game seems to have been tailor-made for a 3-inning save.
Also, cheese.
Sure looks like a dumb call from here.

There's T-Bow...
Hope someone told him he’s not getting pulled until he gets 3 outs.

Hank White
I always forget that guy is on the Cubs’ roster.

understandable
he’s barely played as much as Rivera has this year.

In former Brewers news
Jenkins went 3 for 4 tonight with 3 singles and a K.
"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."
C'mon Turnbow
Walk in two more runs to make the Pays Big 21 person happy.

Only one more
Provided some Brewers guy doesn’t hit a solo HR to ruin it next inning.

So much for that
Turnbow not only continues to suck, he does it exceedingly in order to rob a poor guy of $10,000!

Cut maybe... but who would trade anything for him?
Send him home and tell him to enjoy his paychecks.

So is this it?
How much more of this do they need to see before they pull the plug on TBow?
This is painful to watch. I really do believe he’s a good guy, but he’s not going to fix whatever is wrong riding the bullpen bench in Milwaukee. It’s ridiculous that he’s on the roster.

No way man.
I’m no Ned fan, but this game is not going to get him canned.

You'd the think the Ump would expand the zone a bit...
he’s got to want to get the hell out of there too… :)

Well, if nothing else, this game is definitely going to get Turnbow DFA'd
He's extremely quick and good.
Either that or he's going on the DL with "fatigue" or some other made-up reason
He's extremely quick and good.
fatigue is real. very real.
i would be on the dl with it right now.
actually, i would be on the dl with hip and knee injuries, but i’m still tired! :)

One would hope.
I haven’t been this embarrassed for a pitcher since Ankiel melted down. I do remember Plesac having an outing like this when he lost it in Milwaukee, though he resurfaced elsewhere…

I feel awful for Turnbow after watching that.
For his sake I hope he figures it out. Poor guy.
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
Yep. He finally figured out a way to get them to spend time on someone other than the Red Sox and Yankees.

Ballgame.
Thankfully.
One of the great things about baseball is you only really have to live with a game like this for a day. In this case, not even that long.
Get ‘em tomorrow maybe.
