Gamethread # 5
It's just after 1PM on the east coast- do you know where your regular game threader is?
If you want the lineups Hyatt posted them below.
Manny Parra pitches today, and I'm pretty excited to see him...but not as excited as I am to see Sheets tomorrow, and certainly not as excited as I am that Sheets is matched up against Barry Zito and not Cain or Lincecum. That's right, I like 'em easy. (you might think that there was a sexual joke in there, but that's because you're a pervert)

I like weekend series in time zones far away from the West Coast, because it means I can sleep in and wake up to baseball.
I did not see Prince yesterday as I was at work, but wow. Looks like he's wearing the Babe's uniform.

Thanks for posting
I was about to post a game thread ... but I thought the game started at 1 central, not noon!

Parra in the 9 spot. Apparently the 'pitcher batting 8th' business is only for when Kendall is starting. I'll have to think about how I feel about that.

I don't like it
Particularly because Counsell offers a similar offensive skill-set to Kendall.
He's extremely quick and good.

since when is he not in Pittsburg?
Since he wasn't good enough for the Pirates nor the Marlins. Seriously. The Marlins thought Jorge Cantu was better than this guy.
So of course he fits with the Giants!

Bocock must be stopped.
someone needs to tell him about his zips projection already :).
Also, cheese.
I contemplated
posting a picture of Bocock, but I don't want Jeff to ban me.

IIRC someone was posting about Bocock on the ESPN message boards and it came up as Bo****.

Ugh
Defense really making up for the last four games today.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Without three errors today
Parra maybe goes another inning or more. Errors likely mean wasted pitches which is Yosty's point. (This may be the first time, I've ever agreed with any of his ideas.)
cubs take 7-5 lead over the astros
on a two run double by fukudome
This inning can end any time now
It should have already.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Finally
Sheesh. It'd be nice for the offense to beat up the Giants pen here.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
that's good to know
even with that, I think Parra would've been better off throwing batting practice to bocock.
Also, cheese.

Uh oh
That might have been Rickie's last at-bat.

oh yeah

time for a yosting
with a solid two run lead, we could be due for our first turnbow appearance coupled with a yanking of braun for defensive purposes. We haven't had one of those in a couple months
by SunglassesAtNight on Apr 5, 2008 2:38 PM CDT reply actions
thanks
i'm stuck in the office 6 days a week until the tax deadline, so brew crew ball and gamecasts are my only sources of following the day games.
they should really start including who's up in the pen on game casts, by the way. why is this not a standard feature?
by SunglassesAtNight on Apr 5, 2008 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions
They should
I don't know why MLB.com doesn't do it, but STATS, inc. requires their recorders to note pitchers in the pen.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
oh good
I'm glad that's tracked somewhere. that seems like valuable info to have when considering how much pitchers have worked, etc.
Also, cheese.
by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 5, 2008 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions
My guess
Is that the gameday dude sits behind home plate and might not notice people up in the pen (unless if they looked at the scoreboard).
riske
i noticed that earlier to, they still have riske with a KC hat. isn't there a mandatory photo day during spring training? i'd think they would have time for one photo beftween feb. and april

With the success
of the bench players today, I wonder if we'll rest Braun, Weeks, Fielder, and Hall tomorrow.

It's Prince bobblehead day. Perfect day for Yost to show he doesn't give a damn what the fans want.
by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 5, 2008 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions
better not
knowing yost, nothing would surprise me, but we need to take full advantage of every sheets start we get until he gets injured again
by SunglassesAtNight on Apr 5, 2008 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions
Then again, Sheets is starting
No matter what lineup is behind him, he'll get a no decision.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
this is good
Yost doesn't seem tied to Mota in the 7th, Riske in the 8th, etc -- he used Riske when he needed 4 outs. That's the right thing to do, I think.
Also, cheese.
that would make sense.
he's very possibly the best reliever out there, and it's often a better idea to use that guy to shut down a rally in the 6th than to save him for the 9th.
Also, cheese.
by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 5, 2008 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions
i remember
jeff making this point last season, and I completely agree. i've thought the same thing for a long time. whoever your best bullpen arm is, closer or otherwise, it makes no sense saving that arm until the 9th when you need to stop a rally in the 7th. just seems obvious to me. then again, i wouldn;t be smart enough to bat the pitcher 8.
by SunglassesAtNight on Apr 5, 2008 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions
well
using your best pitcher in the highest leverage situations is WAY more important than batting the pitcher 8th. so you've got that going for you :).
Also, cheese.
by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 5, 2008 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions
by the way
does it make me a bad brewer fan to cheer against kendall in the 9 hole? I'm glad he's playing well, but i don't want to see that move play off in any way, shape or form. i don't even really think getting production from him in that spot justifies the move at all.
by SunglassesAtNight on Apr 5, 2008 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions
turnbow
does anyone else find it curios that we still haven't had a turnbow sighting yet this season? not that i'm complaining

what's the term for a phrase that only returns one google hit?
because that term applies to "Brian Bocock will hit a home run"

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 5, 2008 2:50 PM CDT up reply actions
I googled it
Has to be a two word phrase with one hit returned...
googlemelon
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
google coffeepot
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
google platypus
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
i thought
that's how you describe cookie monster's eyes when you buy a cookie monster stuffed animal.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Prince
I don't like that I was suprised he picked that
I had the same feeling
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"

i was advocating the signing even before it happened, i still think he could have a decent year. i'm not going to get too worked up over 1 game, i just don;t want it to bite me in the ass

I love
Gagne. With the Dodgers he would come out to Welcome to the Jungle and a video of him being a big dork and pushing up his glasses, than K-ing everyone. I think he can put together a decent year.

Gagne
Go figure that the only guy to really go after Bocock gets him to strike out.

Gameday
Is only reporting 2 errors now, Fielder's throwing error disappeared. Wonder if he sent a veggie burger upstairs to the scorer.
The Wallbangers won because they played the game like kids! Let's do that again!!!
convoluted explanation by BA
of how Gagne treated the tie game on opening day like a save situation. BA then explains "That's what a veteran does." What did Gagne treat the actual save situation he was in as? Batting practice?
alright!
gagne can pitch!
we'll have to wait until another day to see how he does against a lineup full of major leaguers, but this is an important first step.
Also, cheese.
going for the sweep with a regular lineup tomorrow hopeuflly
"They're trying to make me the escape goat"-Michael Scott
Yeah
my guess is Braun feast's on his brain.
Is Matt Laporta
better than all of today's starting Giant's outfield?
interesting...
LaPorta would probably rack up as many strikeouts as all three combined, but that aside, it's possible.

I wonder how much love talk radio callers
and forum posters will give Gagne?
What's that phrase? Zero to hero?
He must've
officially been turned down for the part he wanted in 'The Last Full Measure'
I hope not much
retiring 8-9-1 in the Giants order is nice, but anybody in a major league bullpen should be able to do that most of the time.

if he doesn't do well next time
they'll just grab the big transmission lever and throw it from Hero to Zero.
