Worst Fears Confirmed.
Here's a Ned quote from JSOnline:
"You just go with your plan," said Yost. "For me, I fight it because I want to play (the starters) every day. But I've got other guys that need to play, too, to stay sharp. So, you just do it.
"My plan was to get Jason (Kendall) through the opening series in Chicago, because he knew them so well (from playing there in 2007) and past opening day (in Milwaukee), then give him a break and let him roll again.
"With Counsell, I can give J.J. a day off once a week and Billy Hall) once a week and Rickie (Weeks) once a week, when it all starts flowing. You try to keep everybody well-rested. It's just picking the right times to do it."
The outright lie in the first paragraph (I want to play the starters everyday), is probably the part where I would have liked to punch him in the face. I guess I'm not surprised, but watching Counsell play 3 times per week isn't what I had in mind.

Heh
"It's just picking the right times to do it." = all at once.
For Counsell, so in a given week, he'll play 3 times, and JJ/Hall/Hardy each play about 5 times? So long that Counsell keeps hitting, no one's going to complain, but as soon as the difference between a "starter" and a "backup" emerges, the idea of starting Counsell for 70-80 games will not look so smart.
I guess that also means in a given week, there will only be about 3 games or so when JJ, Rickie, and Bill E. Hall will start at the same time.
I wonder: if Molitor in his prime were on our team, would Neddy Ballgame sub him out regularly to put in Counsell?

also great point
about the starting infield being intact for only 3 games a week. that means we'd be playing our best team only 50% of the time. that does not seem like a winning strategy to me.
i'm all for days off, but how about like 1 a month instead of once a week?
ned, just cause you were a bench player doesn't mean that sitting out a lot is the right way to go. i know people like to draw on their experience and all...

Worst?
Oh no, you've barely scratched the surface. How about days where Rickie and Prince sit for Counsell and Dillon? Or, you know, Dillon can play 3rd, so it could be a Counsell and Dillon day on the left side of the infield.
Ned's a putz. It's why I found the concept of "Ned-proofing" to be laughable, but didn't want to destroy the preseason optimism.

Monday's
Hopefully, he realizes that he has three Monday's off this month and that can be the resting days for Weeks, Hall, and JJ.

"So, you just do it."
Why can't he use that as a justification for playing the starters every day?

Also, cheese.

Not bad. But you need to work more contempt into your response in order to perfect the Ned impersonation.

Ned's own career
I think Ned empathizes with backups, since he was a backup. I really think this playing the backups nonsense has nothing to do with coaching, and everything to do with Ned's personal emotions. He probably imagined himself as a "gritty veteran" back in his playing days.

They're called "starters" because they start.
...or at least they're supposed to.
With scheduling giving teams a day off every two weeks or so, there isn't a really good reason to just sit a starter because he needs a rest. I would only sit a starter if he was struggling.
Hardy actually needed a day off on Saturday. But as we saw, keeping our vacuum cleaner out on Saturday was almost a catastrophe.
