is it sad i'm laughing?

but one of the advertisements at the bottom of the page says, "need to create a blog?"

well, it's kind of a silly piece

the vast, vast, vast majority of bloggers don't have that pressure-cooker lifestyle, and neither are they paid by the post. (the vast majority don't make any money at all.)

and two deaths and a heart attack do not a crisis make. it's just standard-issue, "we in the mainstream media hate bloggers, let's start hinting that blogging is bad for you. as if your mother's basement isn't putrid enough!"

Also, cheese.

60 year olds blogging?

The mind reels.

Hey, anyone else going to the game today? I'll be the one in the Brewers hat.

Estimated Time about 1 day, 6 hours

If you want to go to the game Tuesday, you'd better leave now.

when I lived in Madison

I got an email at the last minute for a really great concert in new york ...like, my very favorite music by my very favorite group. I basically had enough time to hop in the car, get on the road, and make it. (18 hours, give or take.) If my gf hadn't talked sense into me, I would've done it.

not bad.

if you have to play a sunday lineup, i kind of like the idea of playing your sunday lineup on saturday. especially against the giants, when your sunday lineup can probably beat their regulars -- then play your regulars against *their* sunday lineup, and it's (on paper, anyway) an even easier win.

I think there's some statistical work to be done to prove that, but for now I'm going to take the easy way out and say it's intuitively true.

Also, cheese.

I almost forgot

Today's game is not only broadcast on FSN, it's also on Telemundo!

I should change

I was going with the blue Brewers jersey, but maybe the white Cerveceros jersey would get me on TV.

by Marty McSuperFly on Apr 6, 2008 10:55 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

If I remember correctly

They use only a couple basic feeds and don't spend much (any?) time panning the crowd. Maybe it's changed though.

Is that feared power hitter Bocock

in the lineup today? Wait, I don't think they have any other shortstops.

by jihad on Apr 6, 2008 11:07 AM CDT   0 recs

Yep

Batting eighth

Roberts, LF
Velez, RF
Lewis, CF
Durham, 2B
Castillo, 3B
Aurilia, 1B
Holm, C
Bocock, SS
Zito, P

It's Steve Holm's first career start! And to think before this year he never played above AA...

I wonder if Yost looks at the Giants and is in awe of their sheer grittiness.

Giants Fans

If any of the Giants fans read today, what would you do to turn the team around?

Bat Bockock third

Cubs Comment

I like this from Baseball Musings

A reader left this comment yesterday:

Hey Pinto, how bout a little love for the Cubs on this board? Fukudome's got a .600 OBP and is slugging .875. Maybe he's for real...

The Cubs aren't exactly off to a great start. The did do a job on Roy Oswalt yesterday (no strikeouts for Roy strikes me as unusual). The rest of the team is hitting just .230, however, and Kosuke drew better than 14 of the team's walks. There's not much to love about the Cubs right now.

last day of free extra innings

has the Brewers. I like our broadcast crew, but regardless I'm watching the other feed. FSN when it isn't tripping over itself, doesn't seem to value showing actual play on the field, the left side especially.

TBS Sunday baseball!!

Leading up to the Brewer game I'm watching Toronto vs Boston, Halladay and Beckett pitching. Life is good.

bobbleheads are often bad likenesses

but Prince's seems to be of some other person. That is besides taking about 75 pounds off for him.

I have one

or two --- a normal one, and a special 1982 pinstripe one.

It looks nothing like Prince Fielder, but imagine if the 1986 movie Soul Man had starred Bill Schroeder instead of C. Thomas Howell.

by roguejim on Apr 6, 2008 5:45 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

OK

I've run the numbers for today's game ... I've even put together a super-dorky spreadsheet so I can do it in the future.

Based on the lineups, here's what the offense is set to contribute:
SF: 3.15 runs
MIL: 4.84

Based on a very simple approximation of starting pitcher endurance and bullpen strength, here's the pitching expectation:
SF: 4.65 runs allowed
MIL: 4.59

Put it all together, and the projected score is:

MIL 4.8
SF 3.1

Which translates to a 69% chance of a Brewers victory.

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 6, 2008 1:01 PM CDT   0 recs

You should run

Yesterday's Giants lineup vs today's Brewers lineup and today's Giants lineup vs yesterday's Brewers lineup. And yesterday's Giants lineup vs yesterday's Brewers lineup. Raise your hand when you're done.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Apr 6, 2008 1:03 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I can handle dorky spreadsheets

But you've gone too far, Sackmann!

Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

by TheJay on Apr 6, 2008 1:04 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Why

If the Giants are expected to score 3.15 and the Brewers should give up 4.59 does that lower the expect score for the Giants, I would of thought it would go up

by Saltire on Apr 6, 2008 1:07 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

because both are below average

the average NL team is projected to score ~4.65 runs per game. So Sheets + bullpen is better than average, while the Giants offense is worse than average, which means the projected run total is lower still.

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 6, 2008 1:09 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Ah okay

Thanks for the explanation

by the way

no projection for Steve Holm, so I made him equal to Bocock. That might be generous.
