Off-Day Open Thread
No game today, but we can still congregate here and discuss such current events as Geoff Jenkins' first Phillie homer, the Chicago-Pittsburgh game on WGN, and devil facial tumor disease.
Play nice, and go Pirates!

Those littel devils
deserve better!
Lilly looks like he did against the Crew, pretty weak.
The Wallbangers won because they played the game like kids! Let's do that again!!!
DFTD
I thought that was going to be a link to something about Scott Spiezio's facial hair.

Nick Swisher wishes to apply also. It's presently even worse than that picture; he bleached part (but not all) of it.
He's extremely quick and good.
that sounds
vaguely pornographic.

What's with the audio on WGN?
It sounds like the radio feed, but it's the TV guys.
He's extremely quick and good.

Whatever happened to the one of Weeks running into Soto? Did the MLB copyright police show up and steal it?

That always annoys me
It really hurt MLB that people could see a play on the internets without going through them, didn't it? Ugh.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
You can see it here
Click on "Top Play"; I don't know how to extract the direct video URL from the Silverlight player, or I would.
He's extremely quick and good.
They're clamping down all around
There are limitations that broadcast people complain about. I think it hurts in the long run, but they're slurping up cash now. "Internet" revenues is some ginormous number, so you know owners are groovin' on that.
I wouldn't be shocked
If some of the owners thought the Internet was a fad, like zippers.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
not the regular SS Wilson?
and Freddy Patek... er, I mean Sanchez isn't fully healed. But you're right.
Donny Iris??
So they get Donny Iris to sing the National Anthem at Miller Park South. Who is next, The Knack, Gary Numan????
The Wallbangers won because they played the game like kids! Let's do that again!!!
WGN having a bad day!
The Wallbangers won because they played the game like kids! Let's do that again!!!
A bit of hope for the series against the Reds
Red lead-off hitter Freel currently has an OBP of .125
Just found this out today
Pitchers the Giants have traded away
Liriano
Villanueva
Boof Bonser
Joe Nathan
That's a pretty good staff, when you add in Lincecum plus you save the 120 million from the Zito signing. Are Brian Sabean and Sal Bando related?
5, now!
I guess they were just waiting for me to ask!

I come back to peek at the TV
and I see ARam with a cruddy throw even DLee can't shovel up. It thrilled the Cubs fans no end to talk about Braun's defense - actually to some it is still a thrill - but Aramis really is starting out the year badly.
And why oh why do they put something white on the black strips under their eyes?
Oh, and a poor job of playing a ball off the wall by the fantastic Fukudome...
Quick question
Are you ACTUALLY saying that's an easy wall to play off of? If that ball hits 1 foot down, it lands in front of Fukudome because it hits the chainlink. It's not his fault that they have a multi surface outfield wall that seems to change every few feet or so.
.... Edit #3: We're gonna go 159 and 3 this year, I can feel it!!!
Lol, please look at the wall
It's not easy at all, in interchanges between chain link and solid. So really, you got a coinflip.
.... Edit #3: We're gonna go 159 and 3 this year, I can feel it!!!
whether it's easy or not
(and I don't think I can judge)
it must be hard for Fukudome the first few weeks ... maybe even the first full year. In June and July he'll still be seeing parks for the first time, and it's got to be a challenge to live up to a reputation as a quality defender up against that.
Also, cheese.

D'Backs sign Young for 6 years
As per MLB.com
Would the value of this deal have any bearing on the value of deal Braun would get from the Brewers?
one difference
since Braun wasn't called up until May last year, he has one more year till free agency than Young does. That means he'll be more expensive in each corresponding year (probably) but there's one more of them.
It's tricky ... I'll be very curious to see what kinds of numbers are tossed around in the Braun talks.

Nothing to do with the Brewers
But just seeing hightlights of top of the first from Camden Yards and the Orioles will be lucky if they have 10,000 people there.
The only team I think they are going to beat in attendence this year will be the Marlins
It is a change days from a few years ago and all those sell-outs
That's sad
That is really an awesome park to see a game!
The Wallbangers won because they played the game like kids! Let's do that again!!!
Outside of Marmol
and Wood, the sCrUBS bullpen is not a fearful force.
correction
after Jason Bay was retired to open the Pirates 4th, it fell to 3.0%.

Lou
is going to give all of his bad relievers a chance to lose the game before using his good relievers.
Good strategy!
Also, cheese.
this is a hell of a game
regardless of who wins.
doumit leadoff double in the 9th, nady hits a groundout to the right side, so now one out runner on third ... and they're walking minky, so first and third with one out for bautista.
Also, cheese.
Bucs Dugout crew thinks Bixler (rookie runner on third) missed the sign
Seems plausible, although there's really no excuse for it.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Missed the sign that it was a squeeze play, I mean
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
One of two things
either Bautista missed a sign (and thought it was a suicide squeeze)
or Bautista is retarded.
or, as Jay says as I type this, Bixler could've missed the sign.

c'mon c'mon
I'm itchin' to put up the Cubs banner.

I started this thread primarily so that you could fly the L flag if (when) the Cubs lost.

I'd hate to offend ourCubs friends
who got lost and went to the wrong BCB.
No, that's not right. I like doing that.

wow
this is a nailbiter, and I don't even really have a dog in this fight.
This Pirates bullpen has the potential to be pretty decent.

Capps
Sheesh, nothing like having to get five outs in an inning.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
5 errors?
Man, not a lot of defense in the NL Central, it seems

It's possible they are
If you throw out all the misplays and errors...
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Position players
The Pirates are out of position guys with the pitcher's spot up fourth and the Cubs only have Henry Blanco left with their pitcher's spot up fourth in their next inning.

which is more than Blanco is, probably

Heh
Well, Lieber's in the game and he's at least had experience hitting...the only reliever the Pirates have left is Evan Meek so they're screwed if they hit for Capps.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Their "offense" took care of the issue for another inning anyway.

Evan Meek
It makes sense that he's a reliever, so Meek can come in and inherit the runners.

and 1/4 a pitcher
he's the anti-Kieschnick
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Kosuke
I thought all the preseason hype on him was ridiculous, but he looks like a very, very impressive player. I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive.
I don't know
I think there's the chance that once Pitchers figure him out, he becomes the Japanese Rob Deer.
No evidence
I'd just like to believe that he might have a tendency to K a bit, but the Pitchers don't have a book on him yet so they don't know what he goes for every time.
Like, say Jenkins went to Japan, and Japanese teams didn't know that he can't hit left handers.
Plus, I dislike the Cubs and would like to see them throw money after yet another over-rated player.
Also, cheese.

Brian Bixler?
Don't make him angry. You won't like him when he's angry. (He turns into Lou Ferrigno.)

Pirates
Their best hitting pitchers are Zach Duke and Matt Morris, which means they'll start their half of the inning with an out.

Does it seem to anyone else like the Cubs have been batting for an hour?

Through 10 1/2
The Cubs have thrown 174 pitches. The Pirates have thrown 230.

twice in a row
I bet it's been a while since the last time that happened
Three years
5/2/05. Not only was it the last time he was walked intentionally twice in a row, it's the only other time in his career he's had two IBBs in a game.

Its all about the Bullpen this season that is the key.
It's a water bear

Marmol
is the best reliever in the central me thinks.
I think it is often better
To use your best reliever in the 7th or 8th inn when its close though rather than saving him just for the 9th innings
no question
I doubt that's why Piniella made his decision, though.
If he did, and he's just hiding it to avoid the wrath of the traditionalist masses, well, good for him.
