Game Thread #7b: Extras!
Ok, Eric Gagne sucks.
But he's about to go 2-0!
Go Brewers!
UPDATE: I am complete idiot. When Patterson tied the game, I forgot that the Brewers got to hit again in the 9th.
Let's hope there are no extras.
UPDATE: I am still an idiot, but at least we're going into extra innings now. Gagne's a bigger idiot.

A new superstition...
I had been standing with the home fans, at my desk, with two strikes and two outs in the 9th. Scrapping that one.

With Torres and McClung able to go multiple innings, I think it's okay.
He's extremely quick and good.
This isn't pretty

Mucho leverage
a.k.a. why our cardiologists will make good coin when the time comes
we're saving Riske for higher leverage situations
wait...what?
Also, cheese.

Riske
seems like he's Ned's fourth choice, doesn't he?

today...
not so much the first few games.
maybe he's spending april experimenting.

i thought
He got the extra frame in Chicago after THAT blown Gagne save, with Mota and Torres pitching the 7th and 8th

this is why we pay our bullpen so much
Why did I make that pledge to pee my pants if the brewers make the playoffs?
what a shame
to waste an awesome (lucky?) start by Suppan if we don't pull this one out.

Gagne is French for...
Win.
No joke.
Ichiro, on facing Daisuke Matsuzaka for the first time: "I hope he arouses the fire that's dormant in the innermost recesses of my soul."
One of the reasons I wanted Riske
Is specifically for Dunn as he is good against lefties. I guess a walk wasn't too bad there.
well, we got that going for us...
not up anytime soon, but at least Braun wasn't pulled for defense this time.
I like Torres but...
will he ever throw a 3 up 3 down inning?

It does sound like a lame joke, it's true

Gagne
I'm not making excuses, but that was a good pitch that Patterson hit. His speeds were a little slower tonight, but that Patterson, every once in a while, reminds us why he continually is given a job.
My non-embarrassing thoughts on the Brewers:
Two Fisted Slopper
and it's one downside of power relievers
they throw really hard, so you don't have to provide all the power to jack it out of the park. fortunately that doesn't happen too often, but it does happen.
Also, cheese.
by Jeff Sackmann on Apr 8, 2008 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions
Again, it's not to worrisome
He'll probably straighten it out. Cordero blew plenty of saves last year, too, and his road ERA was over 6.
Theory
I'm guessing Ned is/was saving Riske in case the team doesn't win in the bottom of this inning. Torres will only get this inning unless he bats for himself, so Ned's probably setting up having Riske for multiple innings.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Possible
That does make some sense but the big lefties were up last inning.
by dixieflatline on Apr 8, 2008 10:21 PM CDT up reply actions
I think that's right.
And maybe not tonight either. With Bush going tomorrow it's a good bet the pen will have to go 4 innings tomorrow, and that's a lot easier if Riske throws two of them.

My non-embarrassing thoughts on the Brewers:
Two Fisted Slopper
At Sunday's game
They had a pregame video from the 70s or early 80s that explained the Two-Fisted Slopper. Now it makes sense! (You lush!)
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Yes
Did they show the actual Slopper? I'm still looking for the real image ... I unfortunately didn't think in 1990 that I would need a picture of the guy (or his son a few years later).
My non-embarrassing thoughts on the Brewers:
Two Fisted Slopper
Hardy singles!
Now it's Joltin' Joe Dillon time
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
The bunt worked
but I am not a huge fan of pinch hitting a position player just to bunt there.
Especially the last infielder
Tony Gwynn's hamstring is so bad he couldn't sac bunt there?
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
but you kind of have to
if you bring in parra, say, they can field very aggressively against the bunt, and you run a big risk of the dp, or at least losing the lead runner.
Also, cheese.

Kendall singles
and Sveum holds Hardy at third!
This is pretty exciting.

1st and 3rd... one out... potential win..
Reminding anyone of the game where Ned bunted in this situation?

You are ruining it for Gameday. Kendall just got his hit!

Ichiro, on facing Daisuke Matsuzaka for the first time: "I hope he arouses the fire that's dormant in the innermost recesses of my soul."
Now that I can think again
How retarded is Dusty for not bringing in Cordero there? What the hell else are you gonna use your best reliever for?
He's extremely quick and good.
Agreed
He may not have a better chance this series..
or at least I hope

Dude must LOVE playing on this team for real.
Gagne must be a bit pleased with the O as well...
Big, big win. There is no "early" against divisional rivals.
fuck yes
getting it done however gets it done
i'm almost worried about gagne...not yet but it won't take much longer
I think JJ and Rickie just became gritty veterans

At least he lowered his ERA tonight. It was over 10 coming into the game.

3-0
when Gagne pitches

Nice
But Gagne still needs to be drawn and quartered.
Right now I would feel better with Turnbow closing
Its all about the Bullpen this season that is the key.

My brother
I took my brother to the game, as a Boston fan besides (along with the Brewers) he hates Gagne. He kept telling me that Gagne was going to blow it, and I kept telling him to think positive.
He gloated after the homerun. I was pissed.
On the plus side, as long as we keep winning when Gagne blows a save, I'm happy.
Also
They need some sort of stat for starting pitchers (ala Suppan in this game) who are robbed of their win.
I just saw the vid
of his throw from the knees play on mlb.com...so awesome!
