Game Thread #36: Cardinals (22-15) at Brewers (17-18)
A winning streak! (Sort of.) Ben Sheets looks to keep it going against Joel Pineiro. Fun facts about Pineiro: he won his only career start against the Brewers, and he has faced Jason Kendall more than the rest of the Milwaukee offense combined.
More matchups, as always, at the BR Game Preview, which reminds us that Rickie now has an .833 OPS against Isringhausen. Hmm...did that go up last night?
Game time is a TV-friendly 2:40 CT.
Go Brewers!

Here's a fun projection game
Who has more strikeouts, the 5 odd-numbered players, or the 4 evens? I’m pretty sure the evens can overcome the one-man advantage.

if sheets goes 9
he might win all by himself!
Also, cheese.

boo
no TV for a Sheets start. Wait. Yay! I’ll just listen to Uke!
Let's Play Ball
Hopefully last rubs off on the team today
"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."

Great start Sheeter

Hmmm...
Isringhausen out of the closers role…interesting.

Jim's comedy hour
Bob mentioned Hanley’s Ramirez’s new deal
Jim: He did have a good series.
Also, cheese.
If good series against the Brewers
got people $70 million contracts, there would be a lot of teams with payrolls matching the Yankees this year.
The TV play-by-play guy's voice really annoys me
At least Brian Anderson’s voice doesn’t make me grit my teeth (just some of the things he says).
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
yeah
i was thinking that so long. where is brian

Also...
I never really got the logic behind combining team announcers for these regional games. I get that it’s probably cheaper for Fox, and these guys know more about the teams than the C team of Fox announcers would. But there’s no rapport at all…shoving two virtual strangers in the booth together doesn’t make for good TV.
damn

Wow.
Bronson Arroyo has an 8.63 ERA. I don’t think a FIP of 5.90 has ever been so reassuring.
Also, cheese.
wow
did they give Cameron the take sign after 0-2?
Did you see that shot of LaRussa doing a Muttley imitation
Man, I bet he can singe your ears when you F up.
DirecTV gamebreak
is a commercial for nascar. I guess they did that for the nedder.
Giants up 8-1
thought that was a misprint….then realized Lincecum was pitching
that still seems wrong
unless he also drove in those eight runs…
can't wait
till it’s on that instant replay video thing on gameday

I'm hoping
they go to the end of the Brewer game on FOX after the Yankees game ends here in Minnesota.
if they do
let me know…I’m in MN, watching gameday and writing a paper

You may know this already,
but I can usually get a decent radio reception of Uecker on the 106.3 station out of River Falls. I’m on the east side of the Twin Cities, though.

both Brian and Bill are a bit over the top at praising the opposition to me
and I would call myself a fan of them
he is getting really excited
about all of the pitches he think they can hit. He was loud on Hart’s fly out too
NO SHIT
why hasn’t the hitting coach tattooed this on his forehead yet?

Yost's postgame explanation:
“Well, those people that really understand the game will know why we sent Billy in that situation.”
And it sounds like Gagne is coming in
that could be a bad sign
Can't pitch Gagne in rain. He’s like the B-2 bomber of baseball.--TheJay
Acknowledgement sign?
Kendall has to give an ack. . . . .
Obviously, he didn’t. so the squeeze s/b off
ha, seems like
even the cards tv guy wants the nedder to be fired
exactly
not exactly looking good for our next four starts. We need wins whenever Sheets is pitching. He gave us a quality start today and we just couldn’t get it done. What on earth is to be done with Gagne?
Can't pitch Gagne in rain. He’s like the B-2 bomber of baseball.--TheJay
or any game for that matter
Can't pitch Gagne in rain. He’s like the B-2 bomber of baseball.--TheJay
NO MORE GAGNE!!
And another loss do to Gagne in the 9th… who’s with me when I say, Gagne needs to go!!!
Bases Loaded - 1 Out - Bottom Of The 8th
“The bottom line is I missed the sign,” said Kendall, a 13-year veteran known for his fundamental soundness. “It’s unacceptable. I can’t do that. I lost us the game right there.”
Now while I agree that it is unacceptable that he missed the sign and completely screwed us in that inning, I also think that he should have never been put in that situation in the first place. What is Ned Yost thinking putting on a suicide squeeze in that situation? All it takes at that point is a fly ball marginally deep for Billy to score and give us the lead. A base hit probably scores 2! (If Sveum doesn’t screw that up too) I just don’t understand why we would even try that and it is frustrating to say the least.
