Game Thread #38: Cardinals (23-16) at Brewers (18-19)
It's Adam Wainwright vs. Dave Bush. For more than you ever wanted to know about where Bush is at right now, just scroll down. For a whole bunch of matchups, here's the BR Game Preview. For instance, Pujols has a .490 career OPS against Bush, which may have something to do with why LaRussa is saving him for, oh, I don't know, a pinch-hit AB against Torres. 1.083 OPS in 28 plate appearances. Maybe, uh, Bush will throw a complete game.
Game time is 7:05, and it's the last time this year the Cardinals will play in Miller Park, at least until the NLCS.
Go Brewers!

Some preview material
So, since Gagne remove himself from the closer role, does that mean he decides when it’s his again?
Some bonus commentary from the fine people over at some blog you probably don’t read: http://www.walkoffwalk.com/2008/05/eric-gagne-the-wow-true-hollyw.html

And still more preview material
In case it hadn’t been obvious before, I do not believe that Ned Yost is the worst manager in baseball. That honor goes to Dusty Baker, whose team is finding all kinds of ways to embarrass itself.

I love it
So basically, Corey Patterson recorded an out without even setting foot in the batters box. Walkoff Walk’s favorite target of derision is simply finding new ways to make outs every day! He’s a Renaissance man of out-making!
He's extremely quick and good.
Dusty even confounded Gameday
It shows Patterson lining out to right field, which is pretty much the worst way to describe what happened.
Patterson was officially charged with a putout to catcher
There’s some good trivia.

that's the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard

I think I've been sensitized by the little woman's love of double entendres
She doesn’t really watch much sports, but I have it on a lot. There will be somethnig like bball on and an announcer will say something like “they need to penetrate more” and she’ll agree in a wry way.
I hope that was just a one pitch mistake

Heh
In reporting the Moustache/Neddy Ballgame meeting, Yost says that they found “mechanical flaws” in the deliveries of Bush, Villanueva, and Manny Parra, yet he would not say what they were. With Bush, Trenni says they wouldn’t elaborate, but that they saw “something a little bit” and he’s going to make an adjustment.
Oh, and that there’s a “light at the end of the tunnel.”
Do they lower the microphone in these interviews to make it easier for Ned to talk out of his butt?

I wonder when Ned revealed that the found all these mechanical flaws - before or after Moustache said “give me one reason why you should keep your job.”

Not sure how to relate that to the earlier discussion of Bush mechanics
As I recall, he took a shot at Maddux saying that he had tried to adjust his mechanics and was going back to the way he did it before.
Bush vs. the world
From the mlb.com recap:
Bush threw 92 pitches, 59 of them strikes, and pounded the inner half of the plate. That marked a bit of a departure from the philosophy espoused by Yost and other coaches - to own the low-and-away strike and work from there - and more of a return to the way Bush worked when he joined the Brewers for the 2006 season.
Bush has downplayed that philosophical difference, but he has been working on the adjustment for some time. He first mentioned it on April 15, after he surrendered three runs in six innings of a loss to the Cardinals at Busch Stadium.
“I like staying on the attack to both sides of the plate, and I felt like there were times that we were encouraged not to,” Bush said. “It’s something we’ve talked about as a staff and with the coaches, as far as taking maybe a slightly different approach after the game. I think the last couple of days we have done that and had good results.”
Said Yost: “His strength is really inside, and I think we’ve been trying to get him to command the outside part of the plate a little bit more than he was comfortable with. It opened up his game today.”
He's extremely quick and good.
brewers have been hitting a lot of pop ups lately
not just today it seems…
"If there is a more reactionary blog with idiotic commentary out there I'd be surprised." -On Bleed Cubbie Blue
They're always
lazy fly balls that don’t mean anything and are easier outs than a dribbler to the pitcher.
The Brewers are above average OPS-wise on groundballs, liners, and bunts, but they have an execrable 78 sOPS+ (78% of league-average) on fly balls.
He's extremely quick and good.

No, he's an okay hitter for average
It’s his secondary skills that are the problem. He doesn’t take walks and doesn’t hit for power, today’s HR notwithstanding. He’s still only 21 though, and with his defense, he only has to hit a little to be a ML-caliber SS.
