Marino Salas, one of the pitchers we traded for Salomon Torres, is making his ML debut right now

...against the Cardinals in a tie game in the bottom of the 9th. Yikes.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 13, 2008 10:32 PM CDT   0 recs

We did have him closing games at Huntsville last year...

that’s kinda the same thing as the 9th inning for Pittsburgh.

He's facing Pujols now

Two on, two down.

He's extremely quick and good.

Salas got out of it

Pirates just took a 5-4 lead in the top of the 10th.

He's extremely quick and good.

LaRoche just cleared the bases on a double

8-4 Bucs.

He's extremely quick and good.

thanks

I actually meant to say “didn’t,” so it was supposed to come off snarkier.

I, of all people, should probably be able to look these things up myself.

Also, cheese.

Ha, I like Rotoworld's recap of the end of the game
Gagne allowed a leadoff single to Russell Martin, bounced back to retire Blake DeWitt and Mark Sweeney and then surrendered a walk to Andruw Jones, causing the Brewers to get Brian Shouse up in the pen. Fortunately, that brought up Juan Pierre, and Pierre did what Pierre does best, popping up the very first pitch he saw to shortstop to end the game.

He's extremely quick and good.

gagne looks less gross

in that picture. maybe he should lose the neck beard and shave a little bit. that may be the problem.

Jeffress will be back this Thursday

as I mentioned in a fanshot, Jeffress suspension is up this Thursday. Hopefully he can stay clean and continue to flash some dominant stuff.

I also just realized he is still only 20 years old. Does anyone have any idea when people are projecting him to be major league ready if he can stay off the magic grass?

"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."

I would imagine about a year per level, give or take

He’s still fairly raw, not a Gallardo; late 2010 I would imagine, if everything goes well.

He's extremely quick and good.

I think he is more polished than you think

When I saw him pitch last year while he walked a lot of batters his slider looked a lot better then the billing it has got. He throws that pitch with a lot of bite and a considerable speed differential compared to his fastball. While I haven’t run the numbers yet for sliders, speed differential appears to be one of the most important things in throwing a good curveball. His change is still a work in progress but honestly I think he could easily start in the bigs with just his fastball and slider. He absolutely over matched the A batters last year and I would be shocked if A+ batters give him any trouble. The only reason to keep him at A+ all year would be for stability which maybe makes some sense. I have seen a lot of talent live for the brewers in A ball and Jeffress was a man among boys like no player I have seen since Fielder was in Beloit. I saw Gallardo pitch and while he was impressive his raw stuff is not close to Jeffress. Obviously, Jeffress’ control will probably never be as good as Gallardo right now but all the tools are there and they are mostly developed.

Interesting

I’ve never seen him pitch, so I’ll defer to you, but with one comment: I think it’s moderately surprising that Jeffress is even being placed in A+, given that he began last year in extended spring training and ended it early because of his suspension. As such, I guess my feeling is that he’s in A+ to stay for the year. I guess a AA-AAA-MLB trifecta next year isn’t out of the question, though.

He's extremely quick and good.

Turnbow II: Returnbow
  • Pitcher Change: Derrick Turnbow replaces Richie Gardner, batting 9th.
  • Jason Repko pops out to third baseman Russell Branyan.
  • John-Ford Griffin walks.
  • A. J. Ellis walks. John-Ford Griffin to 2nd.
  • Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Wilkin Ruan replaces Greg Miller.
  • Wilkin Ruan grounds into a force out, second baseman Steve Sollmann to shortstop Adam Heether. John-Ford Griffin to 3rd. A. Ellis out at 2nd. Wilkin Ruan to 1st.
  • Pitcher Change: Tim Dillard replaces Derrick Turnbow, batting 9th.

He's extremely quick and good.

Well at least he didn't give up any runs

But two walks to minor league batters is not what I would expect. I think there is no way he should get called back up until the K numbers return, especially against minor league hitters. I’m not saying they will or should call him up now, just saying. If my memory serves me correct, when Turnbow was being successful he was getting guys to K and I personally feel like that is the best indicator of how well he is pitching.

What are you saying?

After that outing Turnbow announced he is ready to setup again and Ned is considering moving him back into that role right now. You think he actually needs to show some good results before making that move? Silly man.

Crap

What was I thinking My bad guys, I let logic and common sense cloud my judgment. I’ll be sure to reread the Ned Yost Guide to Managing a Successful Bullpen 3rd Ed. immediately to refresh my memory on the one and only correct way to manage. After all, last night’s successful return of Gagne proves the method works.

"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."

My "exclamation point-question mark-exclamation point" dissappeared after thinking

Now it’s just an awkward run-on sentence.
