Game Thread #40: Dodgers (19-19) at Brewers (20-19)

Monday: Dave Bush quality start.

Tuesday: Carlos Villanueva quality start.

I don't dare suggest what might follow.

Tonight the matchup is Manny Parra and Derek Lowe.  Speaking of matchups, the BR Game Preview tells us something harrowing: Andruw Jones has a career 1.750 OPS against Gagne.  Apparently things could've worked out a little differently.

If Yost decides to play with his LaRussa-style index cards, I wouldn't be surprised to see a Counsell start tonight--he's got an .873 OPS in 26 career PAs against Lowe.

Game time is 7:05 Central.

Go Brewers!

Patience, please

I endorse playing anyone tonight who will lay off the sinkers below the knees that Lowe counts on for all those ground balls he must have in order to win.

by Bay View Brewer on May 14, 2008 5:15 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

And on that note her eis some more good news

It looks like home plate umpire James Hoye doesn’t like the low balls especially to right handed batters

He is a little more forgiving against lefties however

Here are the unshrunk links RHB LHB.So hopefully the crew will be very patient and the umpire will make Lower bring the ball up. On the other hand, Manny seems to work up in the zone a lot especially with his fastball. It appears Hoye likes the high strike so it seems we have the best ump working this game.

Too much knowledge?

It’s at times like this that I feel possibly too smart about what’s going on in the game and then start yelling at the TV when guys don’t lay off the low pitches. As if I could do the same.

Thanks for the graphs, dixie. Now I’m prepared to criticize the Brewers hitters.

I am pretty surprised we come out so well there

Lowe isn’t off to a great start but he is a very good pitcher and we have had trouble with sinkerballers in the past. They must feel the dodger offense isn’t going to do much. No idea how they generally fair against lefties but maybe they have some problems.

Another double play

I wonder how stats like RZR handle double plays. Anyone know? We certainly have turned more than our share this year.

Visit my baseball blog ...or else!

by dixieflatline on May 14, 2008 7:12 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think they don't

RZR is entirely about fielding balls and making successful plays on them.

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on May 14, 2008 7:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know...

a huge number of double plays are either gimmes, or context-dependent—say, pierre beating out the throw.

and to the extent it’s a “zone” stat - that is, it’s about range - dp’s are out of scope.

but that isn’t to say that a perfect defense stat would ignore them entirely.

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on May 14, 2008 7:17 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I see your point

I guess I really need to think about it as a “zone” and not think of it so much as a total defensive metric.

Yeah, his CS numbers this year suck too

Maybe he can be…a 5’7” RF? A really immobile 2B? I dunno. He’s hitting .390/.424/.545/.969 at age 21 (he won’t be 21 for a month, actually) at AA, so he’s gonna get plenty of time in the minors to hone his craft behind the plate.

Lucroy, on the other hand, was supposedly suspect defensively, but his CS numbers are solid and so are the scouting reports. He’s also hitting like the second-best offensive catcher in the draft, behind Matt Wieters. Only problem is, he’s a week younger than Salome and two levels behind him.

He's extremely quick and good.

And why do you always make shit up?

by ol Pete on May 14, 2008 10:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Facts like what?

Yes. West made the call on the check swing after Yost got in his face. Thanks for pointing that out.

Isn’t it possible the batter didn’t actually go around? Your supposition that West made his call independent of what the batter actually did with the bat isn’t a fact.

Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

by TheJay on May 14, 2008 10:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

my supposition?

and now its that West made his call independent of what the batter actually did… not that you can support that in any way, but that doesn’t matter.

And did you look up conspiracy and borderline?

And are you claiming that Ned being a freaky asshole to umpires is without effect? Like Cuzzi? C’mon, just say it.

by ol Pete on May 14, 2008 10:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can support it

You said West “had a choice” and “could have gone either way.” That doesn’t make it sound like you think he was calling the play like he saw it. Instead, it seems like you think West made the call to get back at the manager who just yelled at him.

by brewfan2 on May 15, 2008 12:16 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Of course you claimed to be right.

You insinuated that Jay isn’t accepting your “facts” because he doesn’t want Ned’s outburst to matter, implying that it did matter, just like you previously said. That’s claiming to be right, in my book. You really aren’t very good at this “structuring an argument” thing.

by Zeyes on May 14, 2008 10:17 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

LMAO

“structuring an argument” – that’s hilarious.

Good thing you added the disclaimer about “in your book.” Further weaseling with claiming insinuation and claiming “facts,” all without substantiation.

And no, you can’t “structure” a real argument that says I claimed anything other than a call went against the Brewers right after asshole Yost screamed at an ump and that the call was borderline.

by ol Pete on May 14, 2008 10:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I added that "in my book" because

it’s obviously not true “in your book”...in your book, all you’re ever doing is innocently pointing out facts – and then getting all pissy when people call you on the insinuations you’re attempting to make by pointing out those “facts”. Why else continue the subject after TheJay’s simple “I doubt they’re related” comment? Sure seems like you think they’re related, you just don’t like other people actually saying that out loud, too.

Oh, and gotcha on “structure”...would you believe the language barrier made me mix up “elusive” and “illustrious” on another forum earlier today? Boy did I have egg on my face! Though not as much as you should be having right about now about your massive lack of critical thinking faculties…

Anyway, it’s always fun to toy with a conspiracy nutball like you (especially since you’re the type who won’t even acknowledge their own conspiracy-mongering…talk about cognitive dissonance), but there’s other sports scores to check. See you around! :)

by Zeyes on May 14, 2008 10:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

right, right

And you got me there on the structure. Sure.

I have noticed that you haven’t provided a structured argument.

And you’re “toying” with a “conspiracy nutball” despite the fact I have yet to claim a conspiracy.

And somehow I’m “mongering.”

Sure.
