Game Thread #41: Dodgers (20-19) at Brewers (20-20)
Well, that sucked.
Fortunately, we've got a Ben Sheets start to look forward to that ought to help get the bad taste out of our mouths. Sheets has a 3.15 ERA in his last 5 starts against the Dodgers, which is nice to hear, but doesn't mean much, since that's about one start per year stretching back to 2003. Chad Billingsley goes for the other guys.
Here's the BR Game Preview. Start time is 12:05 CT.
Go Brewers!

unclear on the concept...
how easy is it to add and subtract players from the 40 man roster? Also I’m assuming you can play on AAA and be on the 40-man, right? Despite playing the game for years, I don’t understand some of the subtleties of pro ball.
by PagsBrewCrew on May 15, 2008 1:04 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
If you subtract then they have to go through waivers

Powell last inning was really feeling his Cheerios....
First, he flat out GUARANTEED that Selig would go down as the greatest baseball comissioner of all time when it was all said and done. Then he declares that although some pitchers throw better sliders and slower curves, he was positive that Sheets threw the best power curve in the game of baseball today and that nobody throws it harder. Lastly, speaking of GM Doug Melvin he described him as being more astute than any other GM anywhere today.
I mean, I like Sheets and the city of Milwaukee too, but could he tone it down a bit and include a “in my opinion” or “just really good” or “one of the best” from time to time? Does he discriminate at all, or does every single event that he witnesses pretty much qualify as the coolest most kick ass thing ever in the history of time?

was at the Sox-Twins series last week
It’s a shame that Buchholz had to go on the DL with the 15-day suck a broken nail because he was so atrocious on Monday. However, that’s exactly the sort of pitcher the Brewers seem to have issues with. It’s also too bad they’re missing Lester, but ditto. I didn’t see Beckett. Wakefield can pitch gems, but if he pitches anything like he did on Sunday, it’s going to be a run festival. Matsuzaka doesn’t give up hits that much, but his control has been off lately.
Also, their bullpen is a lot like the Brewers, except that they just DFA’ed their only proven long reliever. They have one lefty, Javier Lopez; my Sox fan friends and I call him the “left-handed no-out guy.” I saw Papelbon blow a save (and wasting Matsuzaka’s effort on not letting the guys he walked score) on Saturday.
by morineko on May 15, 2008 2:20 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
This is where Yost loses games
He tries to squeeze one more inning out of a pitcher because he is due up in the next half of the inning. Somewhere before 6 runs and three home runs are given up you should be able to make a switch.
It isn’t because the pitcher fails to make pitches, its that the manager fails to realize that the pitcher is incapable on that day of making the pitches. And it isn’t because they are down one pitcher in the pen, this has been the Yost MO for years.
by Getting Yosted on May 15, 2008 2:07 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs

It's not like its Parra
It’s Sheets, you keep him in, witha low pitch count, commanding stuff all game, sometimes guys get rocked, and it’s easy to say after that Yost should have taken him out here, but Sheets just as easliy could have retired the next batters in order
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.

Past performance is not indicative of future success
A. Jones homered to deep left
A. Ethier grounded out to third
- J. Kent homered to deep left
- J. Loney tripled to deep left
- R. Martin singled to left, J. Loney scored
- L. Maza singled to deep left center, R. Martin to third
- G. Bennett homered to deep left, L. Maza and R. Martin scored
Somewhere in there it should have been clear to a normal human that in the 7th Sheets was no longer making his pitches. And like I said, this isn’t Ned’s first time doing this.
by Getting Yosted on May 15, 2008 2:17 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
So then the questions are
How long does it take a reliever to warm up and when should he have started warming up? After the second home run? After the single-turned-triple?
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
by TheJay on May 15, 2008 2:18 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
After the second home run
The reliever should have been up. After the next batter reached there should have been as long of a mound visit as the ump would allow. During the AB to Martin, Kendall should have been stalling as much as possible to allow more time for McClung to get ready. If Sheets gets Martin you allow him to face another batter, but if Martin gets on in any fashion Sheets’ day is done. It leaves you in a three run hole instead of a six run hole on a day when your offense is struggling.
by Getting Yosted on May 15, 2008 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Of course
Because in my original comment I didn’t say that this is a continuing trend with Ned trying to squeeze innings out of a pitcher because of their batting order, which is where the problem truly lies.
And no other reliever on the planet is capable of warming up inside two batters, and no manager has ever thought to use stalling tactics to allow a reliever to get warm in that time.

do you want McClung coming in without having thrown warmup pitches?
by PagsBrewCrew on May 15, 2008 2:18 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
perhaps it would be wise...
...to just have some pitcher warming up in the bullpen every inning starting with inning #4, but no major league team does that – probably because that affects how frequently they can pitch in a game.
