Game Thread #42: Brewers (20-21) at Red Sox (24-19)

Jeff Suppan against Daisuke Matsuzaka.  I try to be optimistic, but this is just ridiculous.  We're in the weaker league, playing one of the best teams in the stronger league.  Our ace isn't pitching this series, and we just traded in one of our good relievers for someone who has never pitched in the big leagues.

So...one of out three is ok by me.  Maybe that one will be tonight.  Here's the BR Game Preview.  Among the Red Sox who have faced Suppan before, the numbers aren't pretty.

Game time is 6:05 Central.

Go Brewers!

The Brewers need everyone

Even the guys that have had a terrible time of it thus far. In order to beat the Red Sox, many of these guys need to come through, and I like counting on the regulars more than I’d like to see Gwynn or Counsell out there.

by Marty McSuperFly on May 16, 2008 4:10 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Although

I am surprised that Dillon is the DH instead of Kapler. Dillon is another one of those guys that I have never liked, but he’s rocking the small sample (yeah, yeah, same with Kapler).

channeling Ned

Matzusaki throws a lot of pitches and will walk guys. Joe takes a lot of pitches and walks, or rather “he gives me good at bats.”

DH

they should have called up Laporta or Gamel to DH in the interleague games… I’m desperate here.

by keephopealive on May 16, 2008 4:27 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nah, that would use up one of their options

Brad Nelson was a realistic DH possibility, though.

Jeff you sound like you need a drink or 5 to calm down.

The Brewers will take two of 3 from Boston then go in and get swept in Pittsburgh.

Now go have a beer and relax ;)

Personally,

I’ll be happy if they win one game in this series. But they need to find a way to win 5 of 10 on the trip or things could get ugly. You can’t win a division in May, but you can lose it if you drop behind 4 teams and fall back by 10 games or so.

Doug, please fire Ned.

Love,
Everyone.

He's going to have his own regular column

Once the other guy heals, RJ is going to have a regular feature called ‘Crabbe ‘n Choate’

I believe DBZ stands for Decibels

My guess is they use Decibels as the unit to measure the strength of the return they get off an object. I could be wrong I had a 2 day radar course 20 years ago in the Navy so it is all a little fuzzy lol

What's the Over/Under

On the number of times this weekend FSN will show Ned hitting his bomb over the Green Monster near the end of the 82 season?

Only 1 so far by my count.

by Brew Angel on May 16, 2008 7:15 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I saw it once, my first. It seems like some sort of punishment.

by ol Pete on May 16, 2008 7:29 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I remember it from when it happened.

When the Brewers named Yost their manager, my first thought was, “You mean the guy who hit that big homerun against Boston?” That was the only thing I remember from Ned’s playing career. Though I do have a Ned Yost 1983 Topps Baseball card somewhere. I think he’s bunting in the photo.

by Brew Angel on May 16, 2008 7:40 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If the delay's long enough

does DiFelice get to start?

(I’m “watching” the game on Yahoo [because everything else is blocked] so I have no idea what’s going on other than ‘delayed’ and at heart I’m just kidding about the alternate starter, but you never know with this team.)

by morineko on May 16, 2008 7:16 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I was right

from here: “Had officials tried to start the game with rain still threatening, Yost would have started right-handed callup Mark DiFelice, saving Suppan in case a doubleheader was necessitated later in the weekend.”

At least he isn’t doing what I had feared tomorrow and started DiFelice and McClung in place of Suppan and Bush. ;)

by morineko on May 16, 2008 10:41 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They’re not going to start McClung. Time will tell how Suppan and Bush do.

by ol Pete on May 16, 2008 11:51 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hopefully they add the night game to Extra Innings. The local Fox station actually has the afternoon game on, so I could go from not seeing a Saturday game all year to seeing 2 in one day. Although I would miss the Uek, who is the usual Saturday fill in.
