Game Thread #42-k: Brewers at Red Sox

Let's try this again.  Daisuke vs. Suppan at 1:35 CT (EDIT: Game time is actually 2:55 CT. -bk).  Those of us with mlb.tv won't get video, but really, is an afternoon with Uecker such a bad thing?

(No, it isn't.)

There's no Mug today, so if you see anything interesting on the Interwebs this morning, drop a note in the comments for us.  Thanks!

Go Brewers!

Wondering the same thing...

Maybe they figured out it would be impossible to hustle everyone out and the new crowd in during the 1hr break between games they originally had scheduled…

Doug, please fire Ned.

Love,
Everyone.

Drinking..

I think Jeff did a bit to much drinking last night! It’s Saturday and I still think it’s on for 3pm on FOX. At least JSOnline, ESPN, MLB, Rotoworld haven’t changed start times. Sundays at 1:35ct.

I guess I was thinking of the sunday start time.

Pitcher grades

This would be your mid-term, or first quarter grades given by Brew Town Beat. I like this blog and am starting to check this one on a daily basis. I don’t know if this has been discussed before, but is a links section not allowed by SBNation because they don’t want us visiting the competition? There are a lot of great blogs out there, and I know we all love BrewCrewBall, but this can be the homepage for a lot of fans, I when I check the site 15 times a day, sometimes there are no new comments or articles, and I need more Brewer information.

Conflicted

I can’t decide who to root for in the Cubs/Pirates game. It’s not good for the Brewers for either team to win.

3-2 Cubs in the top of the 4th

Dougie Alphabet just hit an RBI single to bring the Pirates to within one. Zambrano is pitching for Chicago.

He's extremely quick and good.

Soriano hit a solo shot

4-2 Cubs. Zambrano broke his bat over his knee after grounding out in the previous at-bat.

Pirates get the run right back

First & third, nobody out, after an RBI single from McLouth. Zambrano walked Zach Duke on four pitches to start the inning.

Ah, just what I was waiting for

Kasper and Brenly wondering whether the bad inning has anything to do with breaking the bat over his knee. After it happened, Brenly was quite obviously displeased. “No reason for that.”

Fausto Carmona is pitching for the tribe. He is seriously one of the best pitchers in the majors though he probably doesn’t get as much hype as he should. He also is one of the most interesting pitchers out there. I wonder how both the scouts and the stat guys missed on him?

So I have a theory

I think sinkerballs are consistently underrated by both the scouts and projections like PECOTA. Webb was never on a prospects list. Westbrook and Lowe only once and only in the bottom 50. If you look at PECOTA’s top comps to many sinkerballs you get non-sinkerballs which I think is part of it’s problem. It is only a theory right now however.

by oconnobe on May 17, 2008 3:54 PM CDT up reply actions

awesome

NESN is almost as annoying as the Mets broadcasters, who are just shy of the Cardinals announcers,

by Marty McSuperFly on May 17, 2008 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions

if so

won’t it be blacked out in Milwaukee?

by James Stanley Cocanower on May 17, 2008 3:56 PM CDT up reply actions

One more inning

Then Francona realizes the Brewers aren’t interested in scoring, and so he sits Ortiz and Manny so they’re ready for the night game

by Marty McSuperFly on May 17, 2008 3:53 PM CDT reply actions

who can i talk to

to get the Brewers to swap LaPorta and Gwynn for Zack Greinke and Joakim Soria?

by James Stanley Cocanower on May 17, 2008 3:55 PM CDT reply actions

I would start with the Royals

Say there’s been a coup.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions

The problem is that Greinke is about five times as valuable as LaPorta

It would take LaPorta, Gamel, and Jeffress to get Greinke.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 3:59 PM CDT up reply actions

it isn't worth it anyway

we should just focus on trading Sheets for Ian Kennedy in July.

by James Stanley Cocanower on May 17, 2008 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions

They didn't score!

That might be the highlight of the game.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 3:58 PM CDT reply actions

Uecker

interviewed on tv this inning.

by oconnobe on May 17, 2008 4:01 PM CDT reply actions

...about thongs

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I love the "they're being pitched differently" argument

Because in September of last year, no one had yet heard of these Braun & Fielder upstarts.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 4:06 PM CDT reply actions

excuse three from Bob

after 1) They aren’t really struggling because it’s early and 2) They are pressing because of the slow start

by molitorfan on May 17, 2008 4:09 PM CDT up reply actions

??

did uecker just say he had to take a crap!?

by BrewerBlue87 on May 17, 2008 4:12 PM CDT reply actions

As usual, at least there's Huntsville

10-1 in the 7th. LaPorta hasn’t done anything, but Escobar is 3-4 with a HR, Gamel is 2-3 with a BB, and Gillespie is 3-4 with a 2B.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 4:19 PM CDT reply actions

MLB Package

Looks to be MLB Package only as Boston is broadcasting it. As far as us suckers with out MLB Package, Bob it is.

by SgtClueLs on May 17, 2008 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions

sigh

A game that is televised is postponed and becomes not televised.

by ol Pete on May 17, 2008 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions

haha

yea sorry i noticed that after i posted n got too lazy to fix myself

by BrewerBlue87 on May 17, 2008 4:29 PM CDT reply actions

Favorable calls

The next time someone complains that the Brewers never get any calls lets remember the Lugo bunt out and the Hall non-pickoff.

by statsllc on May 17, 2008 4:31 PM CDT reply actions

Lugo out..

But wasn’t Lugo actually out? Course I missed the play and just caught a quick replay while half way watching it. And I had a bug in my eye…

by SgtClueLs on May 17, 2008 4:32 PM CDT up reply actions

He looked like he was still in the box to me

But it doesn’t really matter. That’s hardly a huge call.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 4:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Man, Ortiz is monstrously slow

His knee must really be bugging him.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 4:37 PM CDT reply actions

Ortiz might be the one pro I could beat in a foot race to first

well maybe lol

Its all about the Bullpen this season that is the key.

by WSB Chris on May 17, 2008 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Jesus Christ

Second and third, no outs and Hart & Hardy combine to see six pitches and strike out

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 4:47 PM CDT reply actions

I lied

Hart had a foul. Let’s throw a party.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions

didn't realize

that we’re on TBS tomorrow. more embarrassment on national TV. Sweet.

by James Stanley Cocanower on May 17, 2008 4:47 PM CDT reply actions

Phew..

Thank god.. we almost scored some runs.

by SgtClueLs on May 17, 2008 4:48 PM CDT reply actions

Nice start to the bottom of the 8th for Huntsville
  • Alcides Escobar walks.
  • Mat Gamel walks. Alcides Escobar to 2nd.
  • Matt LaPorta walks. Alcides Escobar to 3rd. Mat Gamel to 2nd.
  • Mike Bell walks. Alcides Escobar scores. Mat Gamel to 3rd. Matt LaPorta to 2nd.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 4:49 PM CDT reply actions

The Royals had a pitcher, Miguel Ascencio

He made his Major League debut and threw 16 pitches—all balls.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh thank god

If you’re gonna lose, guys, at least let me enjoy my cynicism.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 4:56 PM CDT up reply actions

wait

we’re in FIFTH now? What a disgrace.

by James Stanley Cocanower on May 17, 2008 4:55 PM CDT reply actions

For one more inning

Watching the bottom of the order against Papelbon should be pretty hilarious.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 5:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I was thinking the same thing.

The 8th will be our real chance to get the runs back

by molitorfan on May 17, 2008 5:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Cameron!

If only we’d scored some of those guys from third.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 5:06 PM CDT reply actions

Discounts!

OMG Discounts! Rick Sleshinger is pleased.

by SgtClueLs on May 17, 2008 5:06 PM CDT reply actions

Fox has really bad ambient sound

I can hear the PA guy but not the crack of the bat.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 5:07 PM CDT reply actions

All right Big Friendly

Time to finally get one.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 5:08 PM CDT reply actions

you know, it doesn't feel like a particularly good outing

but 4 runs in 6 innings against the Red Sox is pretty respectable for a mid-rotation NL starter.

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on May 17, 2008 5:10 PM CDT reply actions

yes

the couple of odd double plays really helped

by molitorfan on May 17, 2008 5:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

Especially getting out of the sixth without allowing a fifth run, Suppan did yeoman’s work today after looking like a ticking time bomb early.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 5:12 PM CDT up reply actions

great

Now we can give the runs right back.

by James Stanley Cocanower on May 17, 2008 5:22 PM CDT reply actions

What'd he say?

I have 620 on and no audio. What was the ump talk about? Changing balls for future Manny ABs?

by SgtClueLs on May 17, 2008 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree

I love that kind of stuff, the mechanics of what go on with those special balls and whatnot.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 5:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not disagreeing with you

its just that its not meaningful to the game itself at this point

by ol Pete on May 17, 2008 5:27 PM CDT up reply actions

this is

kinda McClung’s chance to fill the Riske void. It isn’t going well.

by James Stanley Cocanower on May 17, 2008 5:23 PM CDT reply actions

Jim is saying that Riske feels great

and Riske says he doesn’t think he’ll need his entire 15 days to recover.

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on May 17, 2008 5:25 PM CDT up reply actions

so....

can they get him some rehab starts in AAA or extended spring?

by PagsBrewCrew on May 17, 2008 5:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Nice job by Bigseth

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 5:31 PM CDT reply actions

Graceful, Joe

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 5:37 PM CDT reply actions

Ruh-roh

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 5:39 PM CDT reply actions

Does anybody know?

Will I be able to get tonight’s game on Extra Innings or will it be blacked out because I’m in Milwaukee?

by James Stanley Cocanower on May 17, 2008 5:40 PM CDT reply actions

my guess is it will be blacked out

Even though there is no good reason for it to be blacked out since the game is not in Milwaukee and not on local tv

but who knows why MLB does what it does with the black out

Its all about the Bullpen this season that is the key.

by WSB Chris on May 17, 2008 5:47 PM CDT up reply actions

That was scary

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 5:46 PM CDT reply actions

Zach Jack coming in

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 5:48 PM CDT reply actions

Oh...Shouse came in

Nevermind. Still, shit.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 5:52 PM CDT up reply actions

why

is he now facing Pedroia? Are we giving up? Why was DiFelice warming up with 2 outs then?

by James Stanley Cocanower on May 17, 2008 5:53 PM CDT reply actions

wow

Have their been more foul popouts in this game than in any in recent memory?

by James Stanley Cocanower on May 17, 2008 5:58 PM CDT reply actions

Looked like that girl

Had a Brewers hat on and she was cowering. S he should been all up on Kevin trying to knock it out.

HUGE BLAST!

by SgtClueLs on May 17, 2008 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions

was a dude

Wow.. a dude was cowering.. not a chick!

by SgtClueLs on May 17, 2008 6:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Braun > Papelbon

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 17, 2008 5:59 PM CDT reply actions

Oh well

let’s get ‘em tonight

by molitorfan on May 17, 2008 6:00 PM CDT reply actions
