Game Thread #43: Brewers at Red Sox
It'll be Dave Bush vs. Tim Wakefield, or more appropriately, Ryan Braun vs. the amount of runs Bush allows.
Game time is who knows, and it's not on TV.
Go Brewers!

Come on now...
Prince looked pretty comfortable at the plate in game 1. A few more feet on one of his doubles and there’s a different outcome. I know that’s not what happened, but there’s a chance Ryan Braun won’t have to knock in 7 runs for us to win. If Prince knocks in 3, then Braun will only have to knock in 4….
Bad game for Corey Hart this afternoon… the Red Sox were begging to get beat if Hart gets even one hit in his RBI opportunity ABs…

I wonder if watching Dickey pitch last year will help Braun or Dillon?
Charlie Haeger and that Zink guy are in the IL so this could be the first time a lot of our batters see a knuckleball.
no sense in tracking the game then...the outcome is clear
..assuming kapler is in the lineup that is:P

he's supposed to be
Tom H’s blog this morning said Braun would DH and Kapler would play left.
Also, cheese.

oh glorious day!
that’s the way game1 should have been set up. Perhaps with someone else at 3B too, but Ned either only makes one substitution or like 6 at once.

well, that's odd
It must be a national blackout on mlb.tv, because I can’t access the stream from Milwaukee or San Francisco (let’s assume that I quickly went to San Francisco to test).

That's nothing
I just popped over to London and then realized it had nothing to do with a national blackout

Amazing..
But what happens if the tubes are clogged? You know they aren’t like trucks, they are a series of tubes.
That's bad news
If the tubes are clogged, then I have to actually work

I’m in that area (northern Cal) so…if you want someone to check again, you can just e-mail me your mlb.tv password:P

Does this sound right?
Official rules: 6.05 (g) – A batter is out when his fair ball touches him before touching a fielder.
If so, Lugo was called out correctly.
Random Gripes
I read the Sports Illustrated article on the Brewers this week.
I saw their mention of Stetter having been the “Candy Man” for the bullpen. As any of my co-workers will tell you, I absolutely love all candy, especially milk chocolate based treats. However, I think the last thing a major leaguer needs on-the-job is a sugar high.
I’m not saying that they should have only health food out there and frankly, I’d rather have them chewin’ tobacco out there, as at least that won’t negatively impact their game (their lives, sure…but not their game:P). Ideally, it’d be good if they could have a trail mix or a protein bar or something…but not something that will leave them crashing in about 30 minutes.
Also, does hazing the new guys really bind a team together? If I was the new guy it would negatively impact my performance. I know I’m not a pro athlete, but I sure as hell do worse when others make me jump through unneeded hoops.
some FSN feature showed the clubhouse
Saw boxes of candy bars including one of Snickers. There is also a mini short order grill.
snickers has some redeeming qualities
seems to give me a burst of energy for my workouts without crashing me, but that might just be trying to justify my own habits.
Twix completely wipes me out though:P
In any case, i think a powerbar protein plus, etc would be better for them if they NEED a candybar. And if they’re just sucking on blowpops, someone should call their mommies to spank them for improper nutrition;)

What if Baker drinks more? That make Jockety feel more at home?
Heyo! Cheap shot low blow. I’ll be here all week, don’t forget to tip your waitress.
aren't knuckleballers
supposed to throw a lot in the dirt?
If so, does this mean we should get a lot of hits with the balls being this high in the zone?

2-0 lead with the way we are hitting right now
This game might already be over in the first ;)
It is going to be a long painful summer if this keeps up
Its all about the Bullpen this season that is the key.
naw...
...we’re only down two, and Braun hit a homer earlier and is having some 2 HR days lately. In other words, we’re quite a bit in this one.

A Bush fastball hit 92
he’s been throwing harder lately it seems. Could it be a Maddux mechanical correction?
And he’s out of the second. Maybe its the ol’ first and sixth where he gives up runs. Just don’t let him pitch the sixth.
so, I've lately said that the Brewers don't steal
Looks like ned wants to paint me as a liar

They really need to stop trying stuff like that
Cameron accidentally runs into some pitches, but counting on him to put a bat on the ball is asking for trouble.

hard to say from the angle

funny thought
2 years ago who would have thought that at this moment Rickie’s defense would be the strongest part of his game ;)
Its funny but not ha ha funny
Its all about the Bullpen this season that is the key.

Back to Mendoza Line
That K put Hall back to the mendoza line… That’s 3 starters below it. Not good..
Cameron
Though is numbers are probably skewed by his stint in San Diego, does anyone have a 3TO% for Cameron?
He's the round mound of profound
mostly off topic
I’ve been building a little javascript tool to calculate MLEs, and here’s what Branyan’s AAA line translates to (not adjusting for park in minors or majors):
309/373/564
Also, cheese.
But we need two slap-hitting lefties!
And a pinch runner!
Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"
branyan could slap a lefty
and pinch trenni…
Also, cheese.

This is why I hate interleague play

I turn the game on
and immediately Counsell gets an error. And now there is another run thanks to another error.
Also, apparently Good Wake and Bad Wake alternate starts.
Nedly
Hey…..I have been trying to give Nedly the benfit of the doubt as the Brewers just simply keep sucking. AND I completely understand that the players need to be held accountable, but I am starting to think that no one is “lighting a fire under these guys”. Therefore, if Nedly doesn’t do something soon….he is going to be going BYE BYE…even it its totally not his fault. I think Ned is an attitude himself anyway.
strangely enough
that ball hit Counsell right where i am injured.
let’s hope similarities end there. i don’t think of myself as particularly scrappy.
Also, cheese.
And Counsell doesn't have a website...

some people reading that comment are probably very confused right now
Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"
Rickie vs. Aardsma
righties hitting .167 against him. Rickie hitting .185. Base hit the only logical outcome
Cash is Money

He's heating up, I think.
Sooner or later he’s going to start cranking pitches into the seats again.

You can have your OBP and good-ness… I prefer the occasional clutch double down the line.

Keeping in mind that I'm a bit of a moron on the subject...
... exactly why is Bill Hall starting every game at 3rd? The power he offers? His contract? The lack of viable alternatives?
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on May 17, 2008 10:19 PM CDT reply actions
Past performance with the bat coupled with much better defense than Braun
He's extremely quick and good.
Ok.
But is “better defense than Braun” the standard we want to go by? :)
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on May 17, 2008 10:22 PM CDT up reply actions
Tell that to a OPS of over 1.100, with 11 homers
and his defense is pretty solid
Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"
Bring him up and see. I'm game.
But he’ll still be the same guy he was last time he played in the majors.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on May 17, 2008 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions
sounds pretty good
I guess then the problem is the roster juggling. Dillon down is about the only thing I can think of.
that's why it would be nice
to find him a team, like the Padres, that would play him every day.
Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"
If you bring him up, he has to stay...
... as hes out of options. That probably dooms Branyan at AAA barring an injury to Hall or Dillon. At least until we’re into the 2nd half.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on May 17, 2008 10:34 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't see why he wouldn't be able to stay as a backup for the remainder of the year
The team doesn’t need two backup CFs; if Kapler goes down, Gwynn can be recalled.
He's extremely quick and good.
Unfortunately
Doug Melvin disagrees. But that certainly makes sense to me.
Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"
Probably true.
I always thought it would be nice to have Gwynn on the bench for his speed, but its’ not like they use him that way.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on May 17, 2008 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions
Well
If Branyan is really bad enough to boot off the roster, is there any problem losing him?
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
There is if Hall gets hurt. Then Counsell's your everyday 3rd baseman.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on May 17, 2008 10:37 PM CDT up reply actions
I guess
I was thinking if Branyan’s bad enough that they’d want to boot him off the roster, Counsell wouldn’t be too much of a downgrade from him anyway.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
And you may be right about that.
But I’m picturing the Ned/Doug factor playing a role in dumping Branyan even if he does ok so they can keep Kapler and Dillon around.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on May 17, 2008 10:43 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah
If they like Dillon that much, they could platoon him with Counsell anyway.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
I'll certainly admit I could be wrong,
but aside from his power he’s always struck me as a AAAA guy who could give some power off the bench in the bigs. But that’s it.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on May 17, 2008 10:30 PM CDT up reply actions
exactly
that’s what he would do- provide lefty power off of the bench, which the Brewers do not have. And there’s this:
Hall’s OPS career vs. righties: .756
Branyan’s OPS career vs. righties: .811
Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"
I wrote it somewhere else
He’s not bad, and can also play at 1st and corner outfield
Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"
lack of viable alternatives
This man disagrees:

(vs. righties anyway)
Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"
I know you're frustrated
But Hall has been pretty good defensively for the most part this year.
He's extremely quick and good.
Maybe Rickie and Billy don't like Dave Bush...
