Game Thread #44: Brewers (NSFW) at Red Sox (26-19)

The matchup is Carlos Villanueva and Josh Beckett.  No, that's not lopsided at all!

Here's the BR Game Preview.   Fun fact of the day: In 14 PAs, David Ortiz has a 2.615 OPS against Seth McClung, including three homers in consecutive at-bats against him.  Wow.  Bring on DiFelice!

Game time is 12:35 CT.

Go Brewers!

about him being on the hot seat

only they called it “spotlight” and refuse to call it hot seat. Of course one point they brought up was the 24 news cycle and blogs. So I guess it’s our fault the Brewers have underperformed so far this year.

Gwynn's strikeout in the 7th...

...was pretty embarrassing. Caught looking on a pitch right down the pipe.

I'm beginning to think...

...some heads on the coaching or management staff need to start rolling. It is embarrassing to be as far behind in the NL Central. I know coaches don’t play the game and it’s the players that need to improve, but at this stage something significant needs to be done so the players start having faith in themselves.

Candidates for removal:
Maddox
Yost
Sveum

the bats are starting to come around – maybe – so I’ve laid off the hitting coach. It still seems to be homerun or bust there though.

Here's my wild prediction

Melvin makes a big trade involving a couple of the players that the fans are down on (candidates being Hall or Weeks) in order to give the impression that something is being done. It’s a tough sell to get rid of Yost or Sveum, and it’s not like the starting pitchers have underperformed, so Maddux is probably fine. The real problem is Melvin’s lack of production on the free agent and trade markets, and his refusal to deal with teams that he perceives as lowballing him has left the bullpen high and dry this year.

Short version – Hall or Weeks plus Gwynn for someone’s setup guy.

Depends on what you expected

If you thought that Sheets and Gallardo were their best pitchers, and that Capuano, Bush, Parra and Villanueva were a bunch of back-of-the-rotation guys duking it out for the 3-5 spots, then yeah, they haven’t underperformed. Oh yeah, and that Suppan is a bad pitcher that we’re stuck with.

Don’t get me wrong, the pitching has been bad overall, from both the pen and the rotation, but I think expectations were a lot higher for the pitchers than were warranted. I count myself among the group with too-high expectations with regard to Villanueva.

by Marty McSuperFly on May 18, 2008 6:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I expected more (too much?) out of both Parra and Villy.

What we’ve gotten from Suppan and Bush hasn’t surprised me.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on May 18, 2008 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Parra's been OK

I guess I give the younger guy a little more rope to get comfortable. Villy pitched so well at times last year that I thought he’d come right in and deliver 6-7 solid innings every time. I really had my hopes pegged on Sheets, Gallardo and Villy, and then maybe we’d get lucky often enough in the other 2 spots to have some good runs. Now, it’s basically down to Sheets, and hope that Parra settles in a lot faster.

by Marty McSuperFly on May 18, 2008 7:51 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's why I said I expected too much from Parra.

I didn’t factor in his inexperience and the likelihood that it could take much if not all of this year for him to settle in to the big leagues and start pitching to his potential.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on May 18, 2008 8:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wow.

I hope not. This is NOT a team that’s a set-up guy away from turning it around.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on May 18, 2008 7:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I hope not

I’m just cynical enough to think that their record is now so bad that something will need to be done, and usually things that are done for the sake of doing something are pretty dumb.

Even if that something is canning Yost?

I get the argument that he’s not the cause of the losing so far this year. Last year many, many losses seemed tied directly to one decision in which Yost asked a player to do something they didn’t appear to be capable of. This year it seems caused by the widespread and simultaneous underperformance of a bunch of players, not to mention the injury to Gallardo and the lack of qualitiy starting pitching, much of which is more easily tied to Melvin than it is to Yost. But I still think, perhaps naively, that the widespread underperformance of a team can be pinned back to the manager. I wonder if the clubhouse here is conducive to players, particularly young ones, playing up to their potential, and if not, I think that’s Ned’s fault. But even if that isn’t true, I’m still convinced after last year that Yost should go. If he gets canned for other reasons, I don’t much care.

Of course, I haven’t seen ANYTHING to suggest that Melvin is questioning Yost’s abilities, so I don’t really think a move along these lines will happen. I do wonder what Melvin is thinking. I wonder what Attanasio is thinking. The plan for this franchise has essentially been pointing to 2007-2008 for several years, only to see a collapse last season and a burgeoning train wreck this spring. Based on his business history I think there’s a pretty good chance this management team isn’t back next year if this slide below mediocrity continues throughout the season.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on May 18, 2008 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm down for that :)

I have no idea what’s going on in the clubhouse, so I definitely won’t go anywhere near blaming Yost for this season, since the games haven’t been lost with misguided strategery. However, given his past performance, and that I think his worst faults are both uncorrectable AND hurt the team (arrogance, pettiness, stubbornness and combativeness), I wouldn’t raise any objections if those with access to the clubhouse determined that he was the problem and sent him on his way.

I don’t think firing the manager is enough, though. The bullpen really is awful, and the starting pitching is nothing to get excited over.

Yeah, I know. *Sigh.*

how is the bullpen awful?

Subtract Turnbow’s craptacular 6.1 IP (almost all in near-zero leverage situations), and the bullpen ERA is 4.03 on the year…sure, nothing to write home about, especially given the price tag, but hardly what I’d call awful. Other than Gagne being miscast as a guy who can still close games successfully (any better than every other ML-capable reliever would, that is), I don’t see how the bullpen ought to be a major point of concern at this point.

I wonder what Jeffrey Hammonds is doing.

"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"

speaking of Jeffrey Hammonds

I once got to take in an inning of a game at Miller Park from his personal sky box

The lady who was the attendant for the sky box my wifes firm had snuck us in there one game and we hung out for an inning before going back to our box

I do not believe any of the current Brewers have their own sky box but I may be wrong.

Its all about the Bullpen this season that is the key.
