Game Thread #29: Brewers (16-12) at Astros (13-16)

It's Carlos Villanueva vs. Roy Oswalt.  Last year, that would've sounded like a mismatch, and if it still sounds like it's lopsided, it might be in the other direction.  Villa has give us two straight outings with 6+ innings and 2 ER, while Oswalt has an ERA of 5.75.

That said, I don't think it's time to talk about Oswalt being toast.  He's been unlucky in just about every possible way: very few popups (Rickie will help that), and a disproportionate number of fly balls leaving the part.  Summed up in the Hardball Times stat xFIP, Oswalt *should* have an ERA more like 3.64.  ZiPS projected 3.48, so that makes a lot more sense.

Here's the BR Game Preview.  Game time is 7:05 CT.

Project-a-tron trusts ZiPS more than a few flukish bad starts in April, so here's what it spits out:

  • Astros 4.6
  • Brewers 4.2
  • Brewers WinExp: 42.99%

Go Brewers!

I remember seeing it back then, but I can't give you a year.

They also broke it out years later for commercials, no doubt trying to sell tickets based on the viewers nostalgia for the late 70’s early 80’s period of relative success…

Hardly newsworthy

But it’s the normal lineup out there tonight. Plus, the Brewers actually have more .300 hitters (Hart, Kendall) than their opponent (Berkman)! That’s got to be a first in a while, kind of like having fewer hitters in the .100’s. :)

Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

by TheJay on May 2, 2008 6:26 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Common sense tells me the odds of winning any particular game

aren’t really any higher when you have 2 guys over .300 than when those same guys are hitting .285 or .290, Yet psychologically, I feel much better about our chances after seeing a couple of .300+ figures in the lineup.

never mind, they actually do. they don’t track every opposing position, just pitchers.

It's hard to tell

Whether guys are pulled because of injury or rain delay or something else. Take Kason Gabbard’s start on April 21: it looks like he might have been wild, walking three in the second inning, but it’s because he hurt his back. Merkin Valdez on April 2 of this year was pulled because of a rain delay, I believe, with the originally planned starter Tim Lincecum eventually winning in relief.

I can, however, tell you the last time a guy walked four or more in a start lasting less than one inning: June 22, 2004, when Chad Gaudin of the Devil Rays had a bad day in Toronto. He made his next start but pitched poorly and was optioned to Durham, so I guess he wasn’t injured.

Agreed.

But I was deliberately sanctimonious because reading the earlier posts on the thread serious pissed me off. I knew I was picking a fight when I put that post up. On the other hand, what they’re doing when they show up with that voice of reason garbage is really just another form of gloating, and a less honest one at that. That’s why it devolves to fast to the more common form when you don’t thank them for being so wise.

Needless to say perhaps

but I totally agreed with everything TSR said over on the other thread.

Born and reared in WI, I’ve always been a Brewers fan. Nevertheless,I never really cared about Cubs fans too much until I moved to Iowa to go to grad school. This is Cubs country and now I’m getting the unadulterated exposure to that perfect mixture of oblivious arrogance that only Cubs fans (and other mindless fanatics) are capable of.

So count me now a full-fledged, dues-paying member of the “universally disparaged” club. Cubs fans, in general, are the most insufferable jackasses in all of professional baseball. Hell, let’s just bump that up to all of professional sports while we’re at it (cuz it’s true).
