Crap is right
Here’s the link.
Dave Bush, start packing. Jeff Weaver, you better start pitching better, and fast.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Fuck me..
This is horrible news. We must bean dumbass Reed in the testicals for payback for his retarded ass slide that took out one of the best young pitchers in the game.
The good news is he’s 22, so hopefully it’s not as pronounced as it could be.
ands its his LEG
of all the FU*KING freak injuries.
You’d have expected this to happen to Ben Sheets instead.

Really?
You blame Johnson, and not the buffoon of a first baseman? I actually thought that Fielder would limit his defensive damage to his inability to catch the ball at first base. It never occurred to me that he would actually harm players on his own team.

Hey, you're back!
Long time, no see!
I wouldn’t necessarily blame the buffoon of the first baseman, unless Gallardo leapt to keep from getting run over.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
It was dumb
Fielder’s decision to charge into the area, instead of scooping it like Gallardo expected, precipitated the action. He turned it into a race to the bag between he and Johnson, and Gallardo had nowhere to go.
by Marty McSuperFly on May 2, 2008 2:45 PM CDT up reply actions
Are you watching the same play?
How is Fielder supposed to flip the ball to Gallardo when Gallardo is running full speed with his back turned? He wasn’t going to make it to the bag in time, there is no way Johnson is out unless Fielder goes for the tag. And furthermore, it’s not like Johnson would have slowed to a trot if the ball had been given to Gallardo, he would have slid either way.
But yeah, I guess it’s all that doofus at 1B’s fault. We should really send him down to AAA already, what a waste of space.

Well, then, I'm glad that out works for you
I would have rathered Johnson get the bag, and Gallardo not be caught in the middle of a bad play.
by Marty McSuperFly on May 2, 2008 2:54 PM CDT up reply actions
Obviously
But the game isn’t played in slow-motion and Fielder made the correct play. It sucks that Gallardo was hurt but it’s no reason to insult our own players.

by SRB on May 2, 2008 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions
I blame Fielder
It was an avoidable situation, and he’s been too big for too long to not realize the consequence of his actions in relation to other people. I’m not voting him off the island, but I do blame him for that play.
No matter how baseless you may think blaming Fielder is, there is ZERO reason to attribute anything to Johnson, which is what dragged me out of my hole to begin with.
by Marty McSuperFly on May 2, 2008 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions
If Johnson stays in the baseline
Gallardo only has to worry about not tripping himself. But since Johnson was almost in the dugout while sliding into first, YoGa had other worries.

So assuming he's done 'til 2009...
1. What is the best case scenario for the ‘08 Brewers? Are playoffs still possible?
2. What is the worst case scenario for them?
What’s the most likely outcome for this team?
3. If Sheets stays healthy, do we trade him and restock the minors?
Steve
http://nohuddleoffense.blogspot.com
I think playoffs are still possible...
...but the hitting needs to come around NOW and stay there, Sheets needs to stay healthy, and Villanueva and Parra basically become the key to the season.
I could see them
trading for a decent starter as the deadline nears, and still making a playoff push.
i think they may need to trade for a starter
unless they feel jeff weaver is that person… ... ...

Real good fans over there, when Soriano got hurt I didn’t laugh.
Karma is a Bitch
What goes around will come around they should know they have had this kind of luck for 100 years.
Its all about the Bullpen this season that is the key.
You hypocrite.
You advocate beaning Reed Johnson above and then have the stones to post this. Gimme a break.
Nanika Ga Okoru!
Oh, and remember, folks: Alfonso Soriano is NOT batting leadoff. He's batting first.
Ohh please
Please… you are comparing a payback beaning to the likes of getting your rocks off at an injury to one of the better younger pitchers in the game? When you go into a play involving 2 of our franchise players, and do an unnecessary ass slide endangering and hurting one of our best players and not expect some kind of pay back?
If this was hockey, Id say put out the fighting line. LaPerrier, it’s your turn.
Well I’m heading up to Moniqua to apparently drink till I forget what it’s like to lose Gallardo.
Chill out
Look at the posts on North Side Baseball – all but that one either say they’re upset to see Gallardo go down because they like him (how could you not?) or because it reminds them of their injury troubles, or they bash Ned Yost. That sounds a lot like this BCB to me. Even those who acknowledge that it helps the Cubs playoff chances aren’t really gloating.
C. Magruder scored, R. Weeks to second on balk
That's an idiotic assessment of the play.
Reed Johnson was busting his ass to get to first base—nothing more, nothing less. That’s how you’re supposed to play the game. There is no reasonable basis to conclude he was intentionally trying to harm either of your precious “franchise players.”
What’s more, it’s completely asinine to take an isolated blog post and assume it represents how any significant number of Cubs fans truly feel about Gallardo’s injury In fact, I would direct you here to see what some knowledgable Cubs fans are saying about the matter.
In short, it’s a damn shame what happened to Gallardo. But so go the inevitable risks of playing the game of baseball. And we Cubs fans know a thing or two about promising young pitchers going down to injury.
Nanika Ga Okoru!
Oh, and remember, folks: Alfonso Soriano is NOT batting leadoff. He's batting first.
Easy now
I agree with you, but take it easy on the guy. There are a lot of pissed off Brewer fans who need to vent.

I just want to make it clear that, as far as I can tell, the vast majority of knowledgable Cubs fans aren’t celebrating this news. (And I still think its classless to suggest throwing at Johnson.)

When it comes to their playoff chances, the Cubs signing of Reed Johnson might turn out to be just as significant as their signing of Fukudome. Other than injuries to Braun or Prince, and maybe Hart, this is just about the worst possible news.

Not Saying we should/shouldn't make a move for him at all
But supposedly the Cards are asking for the kitchen sink for him.
I saw that on mlbtraderumors
I know I mentioned before how much I hate really good hitting prospects, but it’s worth mentioning that Gamel is pretty well blocked, other than insurance if Prince leaves at the first opportunity. I’m definitely not in favor of it, especially when I know we’ll just be disappointed in the return, but it’s an option, I suppose.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Then again
I don’t know how much to trust mlbtraderumors, the site dramatically over-values Cub players, and makes huge mistakes discussing things like the waiver wire, so maybe the Cards are just asking for a handshake and a bag of balls.
What's with the desire for Reyes?
Disregarding the fact that I first thought you were talking about Al Reyes (Ahhh), is Anthony Reyes really very good?

Bad major league stats but
good minor league stats and good “stuff” according to scouts. May just not fit into the LaRussa/Duncan theme of using your change up a lot and pitching to contact.

One other thing on Reyes
He is pitching out of the bullpen right now for the Cards so if we trade for him and want him to start we are going to have to stretch him out. It doesn’t seem to likely he would be a huge upgrade from Bush anyway.
by dixieflatline on May 2, 2008 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions
Maybe not
I always thought he was all right, or at least had enough potential to wish he were a Brewer. It’s not easy finding other options, though. Ask Matt Morris to un-retire? He can room with Suppan.

We’re really going to need Sheets to stay healthy this season, hopefully that zero-sum Sheets/Gallardo theory holds true. The only problem is, Sheets already looks/looked hurt in his last start.
If its any consolation, last season we survived without 10+ wins from Gallardo. Hopefully the rotation after Sheets can step it up and make up for the loss.

While this is terrible news as long as nobody else goes down it isn't the end of the world
PECOTA has Bush’s ERA at 4.31 for the year and while that might now be a tad optimistic his current left on base percentage is 62% which won’t continue throughout the year. If he can stop walking guys he can go back to the mid to high 4 ERA guy he has been the last few years.
Here is the thing that really gets me. The training staff and Ned let him go out there and pitch with a torn ACL. Absolutely nothing good could have come of that.
ZiPS has Gallardo as a 3.66 ERA and Bush as a 4.64.
On that assumption, some quick figuring gives about a two win difference between the two over the course of a season. (The method I used was Tango’s WAR, with some aggressive rounding to compensate for the fact that I don’t have Excel or even a real calculator handy.) I don’t know what a two win difference means as far as the Brewers’ playoff odds goes, but certainly the season isn’t over yet. It’s not good news for the Brewers, don’t get me wrong, but they can definitely still make the playoffs.
That sounds very reasonable to me
Two wins is nothing to sneeze at but it isn’t a death blow. Now is Sheets goes down….

Ugh
I just updated the roster widget. Not cool.
I guess Yost was right about Bush not being in AAA for very long, and I was extremely, retardedly wrong when I assumed that the Dillon/Turnbow move meant Gallardo was healthy.
Oh well—at least his arm won’t get hurt compensating for the knee injury, and it will be relatively fresh next year. Guarantee someone at BP calls it a blessing in disguise.
He's extremely quick and good.
This sucks
If the Blue Jays are out of it at the deadline, maybe they would sell us Burnett’s expiring contract for one of our blocked minor league hitters.
Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"
I wonder if they fall out if they might not just blow it all up and trade Halladay?
A sinkerballer seems like just what the doctor ordered for our rotation. Also it sounds like Doug Davis might be the odd man out in Arizona. We have made a lot of trades with them in the past so it seems possible another one could be made.

It's not Bush that I'm looking at
If Bush can pitch the rest of the season with an ERA under 5, that would be fine. Villanueva and Parra, the pressure falls on them to pitch better than they have in April.
We’ve already lost Capuano and Gallardo (assuming the worst, that is), Vargas has been released, and once Bush is called up, I think our last serviceable starting pitcher in AAA is Weaver. This is sounding more and more like 2006. Joe Winkelsas! Geremi Gonzalez! Rick Helling! We need you! Allan Simpson! Tomo Ohka! Chris Mabeus! It’s an emergency!
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
One last thing
I wonder if Ned will go back to skipping the 5th starter on off days? The last few years we sure did that a lot and if Bush keeps struggling that might not be a bad idea. The Cubs are doing that right now.
does anyone know if CAT5 cable would hold about 160 pounds?
there’s no rope here…
"Cubs fans boo again – 99% of these people can’t see the plate." -Ueck
Sucks to lose Gallardo but...
He does only pitch every 5 games and he probably would have appeared in 26 more games. Therefore, if we can go .500 in those games, we still are in the playoff hunt. Its not the best thing, but I think braun or prince would have been worse (crossing fingers for them).
Bush won 12 games the last 2 years, so he’s on track to get those 13.

Sad day
The season’s a long way from over though. I think the team has plenty of ways to stay in and win the race.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
More wishful thinking
The short stint in Nashville has energized Bush and he puts up a career year ala Rickie at the end of 2007.
Isn't 1st base at Miller Park
where Jason Kendall shattered his ankle as a Pirate? Or was that in Pittsburgh?
If it was here, I think the Brewers should be allowed to go directly to second base on a single or a walk. Safety first!
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
It will be interesting to see how the team reacts tonight
They have to be a little down after hearing the news. Particularly Prince, I don’t think it was his fault, but being involved in the play and seeing his reaction after he say Gallardo go down you would have to think he is more than a little upset.
I’m also curious to hear the explanation for the training staff not identifying a torn acl when he first went down, that has to be sports medicine 101. I would think that would mean its not a complete tear, or at least wasn’t initially. Hopefully he didn’t do any further damaged by continuing to pitch.
"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."
Well
Hopefully he didn’t do any further damaged by continuing to pitch.
I’m assuming there’s no way to tell.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Melvin said the doctor told him that continuing to pitch did no further damage
He's extremely quick and good.
Probably true
I’m assuming this wasn’t the same doctor who cleared him to keep pitching? :)

The doctor's report:
“I am confident that at no time did I do anything wrong.”
Ah, of course.

From the interview
”...from the way Yovani responded to the on-field [medical] questioning…”
I’m assuming he meant AFTER the five minutes of Gallardo writhing on the ground in extreme pain.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Just thinking the same about Fielder
I’m hoping that Prince copes with this by taking out his anger on the baseball, big time.
Gord Ash's comments from memory (highly fallible)
Bush [obviously as he is back up]. Narveson pitched well in spring training [Cliff didn’t mention AAA performance]. Mentioned deFelice [I’m guessing as a reliever though]. Talked about stretching McClung out. Also mentioned Zach Jackson.
Also made it sound as if Turnbow is going to AAA eventually and may be back up [I’ll believe it when I see it].
You can listen to the interview here. Maas Haas over at bf.net thinks DiFelice is next in line, not Weaver. I haven’t gotten to that part of the interview yet.
Ash did confirm that continuing to pitch did no further damage to Gallardo’s knee, and that surgery is likely.
He's extremely quick and good.
WSSP: "[If surgery is required] is the book closed on Yovani for 2008?"
Ash:
Probably, but it depends on, I mean there’s so many variables, it depends on the significance. The MRI is a great diagnostic tool, but the end result isn’t really known until the doctor gets into the joint and sees first-hand what damage is there and what needs to be repaired, so probably gone for the season, but Yovani showed us after his surgery on his other knee in spring that he’s a very good worker in rehab, and he’s still obviously young, and that all works in his favor, but we’ll just play it by ear; we’re not gonna count on it I think is the best way to put it, and if he does come back, then that’s an extra added bonus.
He's extremely quick and good.
WSSP: Weaver next in line after Bush?
Ash:
Well I think it’s logical to think that, but you know, he’s only had one outing so far. He pitched last night in Nashville, and he did okay, but you know he’s still got some work to do there. There’s some other pitchers that we like. Of course, Chris Narveson did very well in Spring Training. There’s a veteran minor league pitcher named Mark DiFelice who’s done a nice job for us…then you got a couple of relievers, three relievers, we’re using Zach Jackson in the bullpen now, and I think that’s his ultimate role. Luis Pena’s done a nice job for us there, Tim Dillard’s done a nice job for us there, so there’s some options for us depending on which way we want to go. I guess Seth McClung has also started in the past, you could look at him in that role, get him stretched out.
He's extremely quick and good.
I guess?
Ash doesn’t know for sure whether McClung started or not?
Is this the kind of inside information that Tom and Anthony have privileged access to?
Also, cheese.

It's his alias
Not a very good one, if you ask me.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Ash pretty much shoots down any possibility of signing Matt Morris, thank god.
He's extremely quick and good.
WSSP also asked about Bartolo Colon
(Colon is pitching in the minors with the Red Sox currently.) Ash said that he doesn’t know anything about Colon’s contract specifically, which probably means he’s not on their radar, and also said that he imagines Colon isn’t a very good option if he’s still in the minors in Boston.
He's extremely quick and good.
so, basically, ash doesn't know anything?
I mean, I don’t follow the Sox, but Colon just renegotiated his out clause for June 1, and he’s still in the minors because he got hurt.
Is that so hard?
Also, cheese.

Ash on Turnbow
They’re still talking to other clubs and will be for the next couple of days. They’re not going to move him just to move him. They’re not going to “give him away”. The financial aspect is “not a consideration”. He hasn’t been put on waivers yet, and won’t be until/unless the Brewers can’t trade him.
He's extremely quick and good.
I would be shocked
if we got anything for him. He hasn’t been good for several years, and his ERA is over 15. I would be totally in awe if we got back ANY player —even, say, Estrada -- for him.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Ash's last comment was on Capuano
Said that he’s about a week away from throwing off a mound, and reiterated his thoughts from a couple weeks ago that if Capuano is going to experience pain, it’s going to be then.
He's extremely quick and good.
Our AAA starters
The JS Blog was talking about our AA starters a few days ago.
I didn’t know Action Jackson was moved to the pen.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
How about this one:
Ni ta ma de. Tianxia suoyoude ren. Dou gaisi. / Everyone under the heavens ought to die.
He's extremely quick and good.
That one sounds good
I am gonna read Celine and be bitter today.
DiFelice
Is he just a AAAA type of guy? It looks like he’s been in the minors a LONG time, but has he ever even got a cup of coffee?
nary a drop
he’s been as high as AAA since 2001, so clearly a number of teams are seeing something, and it’s not potential.
Also, cheese.

No clue
I’ve never flown to Milwaukee.
I’m not sure “available” is the right word, since he did pitch six innings on Wednesday.
Hmmm...
(Understatement alert). This certainly hurts our chances. And I do see that there’s been a lot of activity around here and elsewhere that confirms a lot of stereotypes, and destroys (for me anyway) any good will generated by recent good behavior. Not that that matters to anyone but myself. To me, even worse that the damage this does to the Brewers’ chances of reaching the playoffs, let alone actually doing something there, is that we just lost the first opportunity in 20 years or so to field a legitimate 1 and 2 in our rotation. I was really looking forward to watching Sheets and Gallardo tear people up this year, instead of having a rotation with one legit #1 and a bunch of 4’s and 5’s. And of course Sheets will be gone before Gallardo’s healthy again in 2009, leaving us with a #1 guy and (in all likelihood) a collection of 4’s and 5’s.
But what can you do? Mope around and feel sorry for ourselves is one option. Blaming a goat is another. Or we can shrug our shoulders and see if we an contend anyway, starting with a nice fat win tonight. I opt for number 3, I guess, cause the others don’t seem like much fun.

As The Jay mentioned somewhere in the purple mess above
We can still win the division. It’s harder without Yovani, but far from impossible.

Maybe I need Kendall-endorsed LASIK
But I don’t see anything purple above (well, besides your flag). Maybe that’s only a moderator thing?

Beats me
Most (though not all) of the Troll’s posts are now in purple, similar to when the recommended posts turn green. At least that’s how they appear on my screen.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
You know, I refuse to gloat over an injury suffered by another team.
After reading the above posts a little more carefully, I’ll say a little more overtly now that the Cub fans on this thread confirmed every stereotype I had of them. And I’m going to laugh my ass off (though refrain from posting on their sites) when the Cubs fail again this year. Truth is that outside of Zambrano, the Cubs generally seem like a nice bunch of guys. I don’t hate the team. Never really have. It’s hard to hate a team with the kind of history they have. Cub fans, howeve, who are often (though not always) self-aggrandizing, yet self-pitying, intolerant, arrogant and periodically ignorant, unforgiving, loutish and cruel, are easy to dislike. I say not always because everytime I’m ready to write off the lot of them I remember guys like Al of the other BCB, or people like him, who appear to be genuinely kind people. It’s a pity that they appear to be the exception, of if not, they’re overhwhelmed by the volume (in both senses of the word) of unpleasantness spewed by their compatriots.

In response
As a Cubs fan living in Milwaukee, I can easily say this is the most hypocritical statement ever. A small percentage of all teams fans are rude and ignorant, NOT just the Cubs. To assume that the team we root for influences our mood is a ridiculous over-generalization that far too many people support.
Yesterday was my birthday, and I went to the game. When celebrating my birthday in my regular bar, I recieved so much crap from some Brewer’s “fans” about how the Cubs lost that I began to wonder if they take more joy in the Cubbies losses than in the Brewers victories (as I often wonder about RogueJim). I find out that Gallardo is injured and I’m gonna sympathize with those same people who were amazingly rude to me and offer my deepest apologies. Does that make me a better fan that all of yours? No, it means that I’m not as mean as some of your rude fans. But I don’t assume that Cubs fans are better.
Understand that we have a larger fan base, so we have more rude fans, but you guys aren’t without fault either, so try not to continually cast stones. It may bust your pretty little glass house soon.
(Also, please rewatch the replay, why did Gallardo have to jump the basepath in the first place. Reed Johnson was about a foot to the right of the baseline, which is 100% acceptable. Gallardo wasn’t near touching the bag. So why was Gallardo trying to run towards Johnson in the first place? Seems a little odd to me to blame our player when yours was out of position.)
Good luck this season and I pray for a speedy recovery to a great player.
.... Edit #6: We're gonna go 156 and 6 this year, I can feel it!!!
If you're often wondering about me
You have bigger problems than being a Cubs fan in Milwaukee.

If you read my post...
... and I hope you did before declaring it the most hypocritical statement ever (a pretty bold statement after thousands of years of recorded human history) you’ll see I never suggested the injury was Reed Johnson’s fault. I have no problem with anything Reed Johnson did on that play, and I never suggested otherwise. Or were you, on the basis of your observations of comments made by others here and/or elsewhere, generalizing that I as a Brewer fan must blame Johnson for the injury? That would indeed be hypocritical of a person who accuses others of hypocricy for engaging in generalizations.
Might I also suggest that if you’re going to be so easily offended by posts on a website dedicated to a team other than the cubs, that maybe you shouldn’t bother coming here in the first place?
Now kindly go away.

First off, I apologize, I did not mean that statement about Reed Johnson to be directed towards you. In a set of posts earlier, people were saying that Johnson deserved to be beaned for his play. And while I agree that any player who is massively in the wrong may deserve to be beaned by his opponent, I don’t believe that Reed Johnson was wrong. However, I shouldn’t have posted this after your comment, and I apologize for that.
Second, there are two reasons I posted on this website. Number one, I happen to respect the Brewers (even though I am a Cubs fan), and will always appreciate up to date news about them, so I visit this site. Number two, anytime someone states an opinion that, to me, is massively unfair and wrong to a group of people who will never post a counter argument, I will state my argument.
If you don’t appreciate people disagreeing with your opinions, maybe you should get off of a message board in the first place.
.... Edit #6: We're gonna go 156 and 6 this year, I can feel it!!!
I don't mind people disagreeing with my opinions.
If you think that’s rare, you should read the responses to my posts more often. Also, due to my occupation, I rarely go more than 15 minutes during the day without hearing an argument from someone who disagrees with me. If I hadn’t carved out the exception to my description of Cubs fans (and even provided an example) i’d cede the point. But I did, so I won’t, because I think I’m right. And I wrote the post fully anticipating that a Cubs fan would respond, which was only reasonable given their numerous posts on this thread, so your suggestion that without you they would have “never posted a counter argument” looks to be wrong as well.
If you want to respond again, I’ll read it to be polite, but then I’ll leave it at that. If wanted to talk to a Cubs fan, I’d go to a Cubs site. Since I don’t, continuing this conversation has nothing worthwhile to offer me.

You’re right, judging by your ability to have never have your opinion even SLIGHTLY be changed, continuing this conversation won’t be worthwhile to either of us.
Good luck, and let’s hope for a Cubs-Brewers playoff series this year, I think it would be the pinnacle of sports entertainment.

good luck with that. i imagine it’s a full time job trolling the cub blogs given then insanity spewed there. what does your superhero outfit look like?

Gallardo's ACL
This ACL thing is beyond belief. Yo was just coming off the DL. He’s healthy young guy. Our pitching started out with a bang and now Turnbow implodes, Capuano implodes AND injures himself. Dave Bush is struggling. Soup gets gang-banged by the Cubs. Big Ben, bless his heart, will probably end with with a hang nail that’ll keep him on the DL for weeks. And now Yo pops an ACL. I want to go back to week one of spring training. To a happier, more innocent time . . .
Sure you can
Aren’t you in fact Reed Johnson, who unwittingly played a role in this tragedy, and now has to suffer with the guilt and horrible nightmares?
The only problem is, “Reed Johnson” already sounds like a made-up porn name, so you might be undercut to start with.
