Game Thread #46: Brewers (21-24) at Pirates (21-24)
Well, Ned held on to his job at least one more day. Ben Sheets will be starting tonight at 6:05 CT against Ian Snell. Multiple inside sources are telling me that Yost's lineup today will be:
- Hall, 3B
- Sheets, P
- Rivera, SS
- Kendall, C
- Counsell, LF
- Dillon, CF
- Fielder, 1B
- McClung, RF
- Weeks, 2B
Looks like a winner to me.
Go Brewers!

Quick! Someone email that lineup to Haudricourt!

I was going to write, where's McClung in that lineup?
And then I saw that he was in it.
Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"
So much for sources
The real lineup is the same as yesterday, except Counsell starts for Hall.

For the record:
The Lineup Analysis tool has that lineup at 2.865 runs per game. Could go all the way up to 3.229 with the following revamp:
1. Dillon, CF
2. Fielder, 1B
3. Hall, 3B
4. Kendall, C
5. Rivera, SS
6. McClung, RF
7. Weeks, 2B
8. Sheets, P
9. Counsell, LF

“Looks like home plate umpire Tim McClellan and Ned Yost are having an interesting discussion right in front of the Brewers dugout.”
Looks like Ned is making a new friend before the first pitch.

holy crap!
that 3rd strike on counsell was a bs call by the way

also...2 out inning?
gameday has hardy forced out at second, then sheets grounding out but counsell advancing. so…out 3 was….?
I like Jim Powell
but for some reason he’s ripping Branyan right now. He’s not going to be a savior or anything, but is it so bad to have a power lefty on the bench?
Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"
i wouldnt say he is ripping him.
i think he is being realistic.
i agree with you; it would be nice to have him on the bench; he doesnt need to start like powell has suggested (playing first for prince, right for hart, etc.)
go get em' seth!
Yeah, he's not really ripping him
but his main argument is that Branyan strikes out a lot and hits an occasional home run. He’s hitting .360 at AAA right now… let’s say he hits .240 with a .330 OBP and his traditional pace of home runs in the majors – that’s more than we’ll get from Counsell and Gwynn, and maybe even Dillon.
I’m guessing he’s getting a lot of comments or emails from “casuals” saying that they should bring up Branyan because he’s hitting so good and wants to let them know that he’s not Albert Pujols.
It seemed like he was almost writing him off, which will kinda look silly if he’s called up.
Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"
wow...and he stole on a fastball
whereas last week he couldn’t figure out how to steal on a 68mph knuckleball

stupid gameday
skips from cam batting to braun without saying what got cam (or weeks) out and where the runners are now…
I wonder if that is the pink bat with the finish stripped
I can’t remember him not using a non-black bat other than the pink.
Yeah. Hadn't you noticed that before? I've occasionally wondered if he's asthmatic...

I am going on record now
If Ben Sheets gives up back-to-back homeruns next inning, Yost should get a reliever up immediately. If Ben gives up any more hits he should be pulled. Apparently, this is a new and revolutionary stratergery that I am looking to employ so I will put it out there early.
so...
...you’ll spot him 2 runs plus an additional baserunner?

Please Ned, after today’s game, it looks like we are not just below avg, but probably one of the lowest IP for RP in the league

but we are beat up
without Riske, Turnbow, Gagne that started the season… I guess Turnbow got beat up by opposing hitters, but still
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
Yeah
He’s had eight games with more than 123 pitches in his career, but only one since 2004.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
I looked at the 120+ pitch games
He’s had eleven of those in his career, but one of them happened in the final game of the season so I threw it out. In the ten starts immediately following games with 120+ pitches, here are the results:
10 GS, 2 CG, 4 W, 3 L, 71.1 IP, 33 R, 31 ER, 9 BB, 64 K, 6 HR, 3.91 ERA
If you extend it to the next two games after 120+ pitches, it looks like this (again throwing out end of season games):
17 GS, 3 CG, 6 W, 6 L, 118.0 IP, 60 R, 58 ER, 18 BB, 114 K, 11 HR, 4.42 ERA
I doubt there’s anything magic about going from 118 or 119 (which he’s done seven more times) to 120 pitches, but there you go.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

we can convince Sheets to accept a 2-year contract?
by James Stanley Cocanower on May 21, 2008 8:38 PM CDT reply actions
He will sign a Zito like contract
maybe slightly less in the years category, but maybe something like 5 years for 100 million and then suck next year, or get hurt… the key is he stays healthy this year… athletes seem to do this on a regular basis in contract years

the Hall benching didn't work
Since I’m not actually watching the game, I have no idea what happened to Counsell earlier (some sort of injury that he played through?) but he’s clearly off whatever game he has left. Did he look slightly broken out there during the rest of the game, or is he just being faily?
Tom H
says Ned holding Hall accountable for poor production against RH pitchers. CC looked average tonight.
http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archive/2008/05/21/counsell-in-for-hall.aspx
Mendoza (Uecker) Watch: Weeks .200, Hall .207
Average for Counsell or for an actual starting MLB 3B?
The problem with that is “holding Hall accountable” means “starting Counsell” which isn’t exactly an improvement. I’m not even sure if it’s a defensive improvement anymore.
(And I’m not one of those people who can’t stand Counsell. He’s been one of my favorite players for about a decade. It’s just that seeing him in decline is downright painful.)
Hmmm
too bad we don’t have any other options to play 3rd base against some righthanders.
