Game Thread #47: Brewers (22-24) at Pirates (21-25)
I think a few runs will be scored tonight.
The pitching matchup is Dave Bush and Tom Gorzelanny. You may be shocked to learn that Gorzellany is one of the few starters in the majors who have been in a rotation most of the season and has an ERA higher than Bush's. Maybe tonight will be the night that Bush gets under six, and Gorzo heads over seven.
I'm just wondering, if the Brewers win this game and sweep the series, after winning 10 out of 16 from the Pirates last year, can we finally put the "the Pirates always play us hard / it's tough to win in Pittsburgh" cliche to rest?
Here's the BR Game Preview. It's kind of a shame that we missed Zach Duke this time around--four of our starters have 1.000+ OPSs against him.
Game time is 6:05 CT.
Go Brewers!

Lineups
The Brewers trot out their regular lineup, with Hall batting seventh since Gorzelanny’s a lefty. The Pirates have Doug Mientkiewicz batting second and a guy with a 3.000 OPS batting eighth.

I think "the Pirates play us tough"
Will have to go away with a win tonight, we would have beaten the 13 out of our last 19, a 13-6 record is a pretty good one. With a win percentage against the rest of the league, we would win 111 games, not exactly playing us tough.
Granted our success in years past in Pittsburgh has not there, but our team leader, Ryan Braun was not on any of those teams!
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
For the crazies out there, including me ...
Any believers in superstition or desperate to cling to any kind of lucky streak – like myself – it might be a good sign that I beat the Phillies 21-0 this afternoon on MLB 2K8. Of course, Sheets drove in 6 of those runs and Prince had two run-scoring triples in the game, so it’s not exactly the most accurate simulation.
Still, I’m taking it as a sign the bats will be alive tonight.

It gets better
Including an inside-the-park home run! The official scoring in the game is very generous, so a collision at the plate that led to a loose ball allowed Sheetsie to come around for the HR.
Actually, in all things Sheets-related, the game is very forgiving. I simulate a bunch of games and then play a few, and my season is in early August with Sheets hitting a shade over .300.

Bush hangs tough in the count
gets wood on the ball and yet another play at the plate with the Brewer called out. Corey as well.

Tell me ...
Is this game as boring as it looks while I’m at work, watching without sound on a TV hanging from the ceiling about 30 feet from my desk?
Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to see Bushie hanging in there, but there’s a lifeless vibe emanating from PNC Park and straight into this office right now.

Saving it?
Are Rock and BA at least cracking wise and telling great stories about … oh, nevermind.

it is a sleepy game
This is definitely the good Bush. The Pirates are helping by reaching for obvious balls.
Home plate ump is the one of the sleepiest with his delayed soft call – McLellan.
not to mention
that that was the second time in recent memory he’s brought in the infield on a bunt, only to hit it over their heads – over the outfield wall…

Bush!!!
It’s a good night for players with connections to music from my youth.

I've never heard of Mientkiewicz before though...
is he a classical composer?

I think he does the song parodies
Weird Al Mientkiewicz
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
No matter how this inning ends ...
... it must be really hard to be a Pirates fan. Look at this inning, how this is going down. Bottom of the order makes a threat after a leadoff homer.

Razor
I’m not sure I trust a clean-shaven Dave Bush. Now he hits a guy. Here’s the inning for Bushie. It’s always right around the corner.

ok, that was funny.
just as BA is mentioning the ‘mechanical fix’ in Bush’s delivery, Bay absolutely crushes a HR to center
Anybody listening to Jim Powell?
He just said something he’s going to regret, talking about former union chief Marvin Miller:
“At age 91, maybe it’s time for Mr. Miller to take a nap.”
Yikes.
Derek Jeter is day to day after being hit by a pitch and being gorilla press slammed by a Bizarro Ray.
I'm guessing
that was in reference to Miller telling the vet’s committee to leave him off their HOF list?
It was.

Christ!
Picked a bad time to go outside for a smoke break. HR, I’m guessing?
For some reason I’m optimistic they turn this around tonight.
by Bay View Brewer on May 22, 2008 7:28 PM CDT reply actions
uh,
Bay hit a 2 run HR and some hits and at least one HBP led to the other two runs. I know that’s vague, but this is a pretty dull game.
Inside info
Maddux just told him he has to hold down the L2 button when throwing the slider to get the turbo boost for added break.
This is terrible.

For what it's worth ...
... just to repeat myself, something in my gut tells me they’re going to score enough to get back into this. At least have the tying run in scoring position late or something.

zilch
I have nothing to say about Rickie’s one-out walk to bring up Cameron.
shhhh …
by Bay View Brewer on May 22, 2008 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions
Nice AB Rickie!
and did Rock just say the tying run comes to the plate? I swear he’s screwed that up so many times this year
Weeks' eye
It’s a funny thing: On a team full of free-swingers, Rickie’s problems have nothing to do with when the ball is out of the zone. He can’t deal with when the pitcher throws strikes. Go figure.

Sunday BP
Speaking of DiFelice, was any HR you’ve seen in ages less of a surprise than that shot by Ortiz on Sunday? It was like he was measuring him for it during the whole AB, like a cat playing with a mouse.

Nope, I refuse to feel that feeling again.

did prince get in a strange run-down after the force out at first?

good time for kendall's first home run

now all we need...
is 2 runs in one of the remaining innings and 1 run in the other. and hold them. to get the tie.
I have a shred of optimism coming back.
Seems odd to use DiFelice, a starter, for one inning
Jackson in to the delight of his family who made a truly poor effort at synchronized t-shirts.

Fastballs up are how many guys buy tickets to Nashville these days. Airlines actually accept ‘em as currency
by Bay View Brewer on May 22, 2008 8:30 PM CDT reply actions
I didn’t think he looked too bad – the guy hit a chest high inside fastball off the handle and the others were weak grounders.
I wonder what the ol’ Gameday pitch graphic thing showed. From my prespective, admittedly not the best here at work, the pitch looked like it was over the inner-half of the plate and up. I don’t know, seemed kind of fat to me.

... 8-6 will be your final. Book it. Dammit.

The next time this ump does that slow raise of the arm strike call, I want to snap it off at the elbow and beat him about the head with it.
No, not at all. This game isn’t frustrating me in the least.

it seems like an extraordinary amount of our hrs are solo shots

Left-orium
How many lefties does Pittsburgh have on the roster? Have we seen them all tonight? Maybe they’ll bring in Zach Duke to pitch the 9th or something.

Black humor
I love how the top of the 8th was so discouraging and sad no one even posts. Just silence on the board until an out into the bottom of the 8th.

doing other stuff on my computer. i guess boring script editing takes precedence over watching our asses get handed to us.
by PagsBrewCrew on May 22, 2008 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions
That's the problem
He’s never developed any sort of off-speed pitch. It’s fastball, cutter, fastball, cutter, etc.
Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"
Good night
Can’t bear to close it out. At least we’re going to Washington next. Maybe we can catch some luck there. I just hope the Brewers remember to pack all those men they left on base before heading to the Pittsburgh airport.

Brewer player of the game...
has got to be hall. never left a runner on without advancing them. I guess he does do well against lefties (3 for 4?)
statswise
cam, kendall and especially hardy were anti-clutch.

Cirillo is a natural - works well combined with his knowledge
I thought Ray King did well in the two TV things I saw him on in the past day or so. He looks good trimmed down.
