Game Thread #47: Brewers (22-24) at Pirates (21-25)

I think a few runs will be scored tonight.

The pitching matchup is Dave Bush and Tom Gorzelanny.  You may be shocked to learn that Gorzellany is one of the few starters in the majors who have been in a rotation most of the season and has an ERA higher than Bush's.  Maybe tonight will be the night that Bush gets under six, and Gorzo heads over seven.

I'm just wondering, if the Brewers win this game and sweep the series, after winning 10 out of 16 from the Pirates last year, can we finally put the "the Pirates always play us hard / it's tough to win in Pittsburgh" cliche to rest?

Here's the BR Game Preview.  It's kind of a shame that we missed Zach Duke this time around--four of our starters have 1.000+ OPSs against him.

Game time is 6:05 CT.

Go Brewers!

Lineups

The Brewers trot out their regular lineup, with Hall batting seventh since Gorzelanny’s a lefty. The Pirates have Doug Mientkiewicz batting second and a guy with a 3.000 OPS batting eighth.

I think "the Pirates play us tough"

Will have to go away with a win tonight, we would have beaten the 13 out of our last 19, a 13-6 record is a pretty good one. With a win percentage against the rest of the league, we would win 111 games, not exactly playing us tough.

Granted our success in years past in Pittsburgh has not there, but our team leader, Ryan Braun was not on any of those teams!

The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.

For the crazies out there, including me ...

Any believers in superstition or desperate to cling to any kind of lucky streak – like myself – it might be a good sign that I beat the Phillies 21-0 this afternoon on MLB 2K8. Of course, Sheets drove in 6 of those runs and Prince had two run-scoring triples in the game, so it’s not exactly the most accurate simulation.

Still, I’m taking it as a sign the bats will be alive tonight.

LOL!

6 RBI for Sheets. That is awesome.

It gets better

Including an inside-the-park home run! The official scoring in the game is very generous, so a collision at the plate that led to a loose ball allowed Sheetsie to come around for the HR.

Actually, in all things Sheets-related, the game is very forgiving. I simulate a bunch of games and then play a few, and my season is in early August with Sheets hitting a shade over .300.

injury delay

one of them or one of us? ie Prince/bush?

no clue – must have happened while I was getting food ready

Bush hangs tough in the count

gets wood on the ball and yet another play at the plate with the Brewer called out. Corey as well.

Tell me ...

Is this game as boring as it looks while I’m at work, watching without sound on a TV hanging from the ceiling about 30 feet from my desk?

Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to see Bushie hanging in there, but there’s a lifeless vibe emanating from PNC Park and straight into this office right now.

by Bay View Brewer on May 22, 2008 6:55 PM CDT   0 recs

Saving it?

Are Rock and BA at least cracking wise and telling great stories about … oh, nevermind.

by Bay View Brewer on May 22, 2008 6:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

it is a sleepy game

This is definitely the good Bush. The Pirates are helping by reaching for obvious balls.

Home plate ump is the one of the sleepiest with his delayed soft call – McLellan.

not to mention

that that was the second time in recent memory he’s brought in the infield on a bunt, only to hit it over their heads – over the outfield wall…

Really?

I seem to remember this.

Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"

I think he does the song parodies

Weird Al Mientkiewicz

"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"

Mientkiewicz

having a terrible time throwing the ball to first. Last one took two hops.

Scary dive by Bush

Nice hustle, though!

by oconnobe on May 22, 2008 7:02 PM CDT   0 recs

No matter how this inning ends ...

... it must be really hard to be a Pirates fan. Look at this inning, how this is going down. Bottom of the order makes a threat after a leadoff homer.

by Bay View Brewer on May 22, 2008 7:04 PM CDT   0 recs

oh well - no runs

79 pitches through 4 for Gorzo

Bush

is hitting the Mendoza line.

by PagsBrewCrew on May 22, 2008 7:09 PM CDT   0 recs

Razor

I’m not sure I trust a clean-shaven Dave Bush. Now he hits a guy. Here’s the inning for Bushie. It’s always right around the corner.

by Bay View Brewer on May 22, 2008 7:15 PM CDT   0 recs

ok, that was funny.

just as BA is mentioning the ‘mechanical fix’ in Bush’s delivery, Bay absolutely crushes a HR to center

by sheeter on May 22, 2008 7:15 PM CDT   0 recs

fix resulted in an 87 mph slider over the center of the plate

Anybody listening to Jim Powell?

He just said something he’s going to regret, talking about former union chief Marvin Miller:

“At age 91, maybe it’s time for Mr. Miller to take a nap.”

Yikes.

Derek Jeter is day to day after being hit by a pitch and being gorilla press slammed by a Bizarro Ray.

by KLSnow on May 22, 2008 7:21 PM CDT   0 recs

I'm guessing

that was in reference to Miller telling the vet’s committee to leave him off their HOF list?

by sheeter on May 22, 2008 7:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It was.

Christ!

Picked a bad time to go outside for a smoke break. HR, I’m guessing?

For some reason I’m optimistic they turn this around tonight.

by Bay View Brewer on May 22, 2008 7:28 PM CDT   0 recs

uh,

Bay hit a 2 run HR and some hits and at least one HBP led to the other two runs. I know that’s vague, but this is a pretty dull game.

by sheeter on May 22, 2008 7:31 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Inside info

Maddux just told him he has to hold down the L2 button when throwing the slider to get the turbo boost for added break.

This is terrible.

by Bay View Brewer on May 22, 2008 7:41 PM CDT   0 recs

For what it's worth ...

... just to repeat myself, something in my gut tells me they’re going to score enough to get back into this. At least have the tying run in scoring position late or something.

by Bay View Brewer on May 22, 2008 7:49 PM CDT   0 recs

zilch

I have nothing to say about Rickie’s one-out walk to bring up Cameron.

shhhh …

by Bay View Brewer on May 22, 2008 7:55 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Nice AB Rickie!

and did Rock just say the tying run comes to the plate? I swear he’s screwed that up so many times this year

by Scooter82 on May 22, 2008 7:55 PM CDT   0 recs

Weeks' eye

It’s a funny thing: On a team full of free-swingers, Rickie’s problems have nothing to do with when the ball is out of the zone. He can’t deal with when the pitcher throws strikes. Go figure.

ground ball out JJ to Prince

Sunday BP

Speaking of DiFelice, was any HR you’ve seen in ages less of a surprise than that shot by Ortiz on Sunday? It was like he was measuring him for it during the whole AB, like a cat playing with a mouse.

by Bay View Brewer on May 22, 2008 8:03 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Well, I hear ya

It was DiFelice’s debut in the majors and it is Ortiz though. Quick inning here.

by ol Pete on May 22, 2008 8:06 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

fielder hit the ball and it fell to the ground… :)

by PagsBrewCrew on May 22, 2008 8:08 PM CDT   0 recs

ol Pete

I’m not getting that feeling anymore about a comeback. What the hell?

by Bay View Brewer on May 22, 2008 8:08 PM CDT   0 recs

Well ...

Nope, I refuse to feel that feeling again.

? what happened there?

did prince get in a strange run-down after the force out at first?

by PagsBrewCrew on May 22, 2008 8:13 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

that would be a good description

by ol Pete on May 22, 2008 8:13 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah

got the force at first really quick and he was caught trying to put moves on to avoid tags like he was Barry Sanders

good time for kendall's first home run

by dux2bux on May 22, 2008 8:15 PM CDT   0 recs

now all we need...

is 2 runs in one of the remaining innings and 1 run in the other. and hold them. to get the tie.

I have a shred of optimism coming back.

by PagsBrewCrew on May 22, 2008 8:17 PM CDT   0 recs

Seems odd to use DiFelice, a starter, for one inning

Jackson in to the delight of his family who made a truly poor effort at synchronized t-shirts.
