Game Thread #49: Brewers (22-26) at Nationals (21-28)

The 2008 Milwaukee Brewers road show: Making bad teams feel better about themselves! (c)

Tonight opens the Seth McClung era, and John Lannan, whose era has already begun in Washington, goes for the Nats.  I want McClung to succeed, I really do, but this has "disaster" written all over it.

Game time is 6:10 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.

Go Brewers!

Hopefully the "Seth McClung era" is a low one

/bad baseball stat pun

Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"

And I am back

Kind of strange to leave for nearly a week and then return before the long weekend but then again I am pretty strange. I completely agree with you Jeff this could be ugly. I am not sold on McClung’s off speed stuff and if he has to slow his fastball down in order to not tire himself out what does he really have to offer as a starter? Then again it is the National offense so he could get off to a good start today.

McClung starting...

What’s the opposite of a perfect game?

Maybe

This will turn out like those forfeit lineup games where McClung only gives up one run through 7 innings.

He's the round mound of profound

I’m already sick of Bill’s lecture, surely they must hear that over and over.

wow I didn't think Guzman could hit it that far

Looked like it surprised Cameron as well.

This is the first time I've seen the Nats' stadium on TV

That’s a weird notch in the OF.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 24, 2008 6:26 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah you see things like that a lot with those stadiums kind of in the city

You can get some messy angles. Not sure if that is good for the game or bad for the game but interesting.

Hey, so I came across this blog post about pitchfx distortion

Is the quality of data of individual ballparks known?

by ol Pete on May 24, 2008 6:28 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It depends on what you mean by distortion

but yes if you plot certain variables you can look at things like distortion and try to correct for them. The worst part is that sportvision will mess with the cameras and then change everything.

Can I ask what site you were looking at Pete?

Just curious who was writing about it.

It was ike something I think – you commented on it so its one you already know about.

by ol Pete on May 24, 2008 6:33 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah Ike

He doesn’t like my correction system very much. He is trying to fix all the camera’s by looking at crazy things like that. Honestly, he isn’t having very much success but it would be nice if he would. The data that is coming out of those cameras is pretty crappy.

by dixieflatline on May 24, 2008 6:36 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

The one thing I saw was about barrel distortion of the lens. That is somewhat odd to me given the quality of modern lenses – but whatever. I guess what I really want to know is how accurate is the gameday graphic representation.

by ol Pete on May 24, 2008 6:32 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

That data is terrible.

Until the data was corrected the camera in Cincy had gameday saying that Gallardo threw 3 fastballs in his first start.

Yeah, that's still a work in progress

Still a bit of wishware going on there

by Lake County on May 24, 2008 6:35 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Once corrected it can be quite good

But before that you shouldn’t trust it.

It's early, but

McLung for Balfour already a winner in my book.

Yeah Doug and the boys sometimes look real good

Then there is the Safate for nothing trade though and you shake your head.

Lannan's shoulders look really weird

He either has horrible posture or is very embarrassed.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 24, 2008 6:29 PM CDT   0 recs

After that inning

No embarrassment needed

by Lake County on May 24, 2008 6:31 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Nice play Billy

I hope to remember that during the next routine E5

jeff; you couldnt manage a shout out to me in the preview? this is the best day, ever!!!

go get em' seth!

Nice scoop by Prince

McClung throwing strikes and looking okay … on tv, the pitches look quite hittable, though.

by oconnobe on May 24, 2008 6:37 PM CDT   0 recs

only 8 pitches

The thing I worried about most was a high pitch count where the Nats would get good looks at his off speed pitches. It looks like only one slider in that last inning and the rest fastballs. Not a very good approach by them.

Not in MLB

He had a double last year at Nashville.

So McClung is a switch hitter?

That is pretty crazy.

Even crazier.

McLung's Mechanics

Were they really that bad?

Give him credit for changing everything.

by Lake County on May 24, 2008 6:50 PM CDT   0 recs

go to the Brewers site

click on roster, click on him and they’ll have video highlights of earlier in his career. They were pretty dramatic.

Interest you say that

McClung still throwing in the mid 90's

If he can do that while starting that will greatly increase his chances.

McClung

I am shocked at how well he is pitching. Absolutely shocked.

Not sure

whether to be shocked or impressed. I do like the Grit though. He obviously recognized this was a huge opportunity and has grabbed it by the balls. The next couple innings will be the real test I think. I hope it continues to go well!!

A kind gesture

That’s an inexcusable mental error.

What exactly happened?

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 24, 2008 7:42 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Grounder to short and Nieves took off from second right away

Hall didn’t cover third, so Hardy had to throw to first instead.

McLarge

5 IP, 2 R.

Even against the lowly Nats, I like it.

by Lake County on May 24, 2008 7:39 PM CDT   0 recs

I agree

now it is time to turn it over to the pen. Can’t imagine that McClung has much left in the tank today.
