Game Thread #49: Brewers (22-26) at Nationals (21-28)

The 2008 Milwaukee Brewers road show: Making bad teams feel better about themselves! (c)

Tonight opens the Seth McClung era, and John Lannan, whose era has already begun in Washington, goes for the Nats.  I want McClung to succeed, I really do, but this has "disaster" written all over it.

Game time is 6:10 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.

Go Brewers!

Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"

And I am back

Kind of strange to leave for nearly a week and then return before the long weekend but then again I am pretty strange. I completely agree with you Jeff this could be ugly. I am not sold on McClung’s off speed stuff and if he has to slow his fastball down in order to not tire himself out what does he really have to offer as a starter? Then again it is the National offense so he could get off to a good start today.

McClung starting...

Maybe

This will turn out like those forfeit lineup games where McClung only gives up one run through 7 innings.

This is the first time I've seen the Nats' stadium on TV

That’s a weird notch in the OF.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 24, 2008 6:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah you see things like that a lot with those stadiums kind of in the city

You can get some messy angles. Not sure if that is good for the game or bad for the game but interesting.

It depends on what you mean by distortion

but yes if you plot certain variables you can look at things like distortion and try to correct for them. The worst part is that sportvision will mess with the cameras and then change everything.

Can I ask what site you were looking at Pete?

Just curious who was writing about it.

It was ike something I think – you commented on it so its one you already know about.

by ol Pete on May 24, 2008 6:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah Ike

He doesn’t like my correction system very much. He is trying to fix all the camera’s by looking at crazy things like that. Honestly, he isn’t having very much success but it would be nice if he would. The data that is coming out of those cameras is pretty crappy.

by dixieflatline on May 24, 2008 6:36 PM CDT up reply actions

The one thing I saw was about barrel distortion of the lens. That is somewhat odd to me given the quality of modern lenses – but whatever. I guess what I really want to know is how accurate is the gameday graphic representation.

by ol Pete on May 24, 2008 6:32 PM CDT up reply actions

That data is terrible.

Until the data was corrected the camera in Cincy had gameday saying that Gallardo threw 3 fastballs in his first start.

Once corrected it can be quite good

But before that you shouldn’t trust it.

Nice scoop by Prince

McClung throwing strikes and looking okay … on tv, the pitches look quite hittable, though.

by oconnobe on May 24, 2008 6:37 PM CDT reply actions

only 8 pitches

The thing I worried about most was a high pitch count where the Nats would get good looks at his off speed pitches. It looks like only one slider in that last inning and the rest fastballs. Not a very good approach by them.

you know

I am less and less worried when balls are hit to rickie. it’s when their pitched to him that i’m much more concerned. odd turn of events in his career so far, huh?

by Oakland Brewer Fan on May 24, 2008 8:35 PM CDT reply actions

Yep

I’d seriously put him in the 7 spot and just let him see ball hit ball at this point.

by Lake County on May 24, 2008 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, he’s 14th in all of MLB, and has the second-most OOZ (out of zone) plays, so I’d say he’s become a solidly average second baseman.

Definition of RZR:

Revised Zone Rating is the proportion of balls hit into a fielder’s zone that he successfully converted into an out. Zone Rating was invented by John Dewan when he was CEO of Stats Inc. John is now the owner of Baseball Info Solutions, where he has revised the original Zone Rating calculation so that it now lists balls handled out of the zone (OOZ) separately (and doesn’t include them in the ZR calculation) and doesn’t give players extra credit for double plays (Stats had already made that change). We believe both changes improve Zone Ratings substantially. To get a full picture of a player’s range, you should evaluate both his Revised Zone Rating and his plays made out of zone (OOZ). You can read more about the Revised Zone Ratings in this article.

He's extremely quick and good.

by Oakland Brewer Fan on May 24, 2008 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Just to restate, because I was gone when he came out of the game

But this was a hell of a start by McClung. 4/0 K/BB and only 68 pitches. Exciting and relieving.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 24, 2008 8:36 PM CDT reply actions

The slightly concerning part is that he’s throwing fastballs in the low 90s rather than mid to upper 90s. Maybe their is some difference in the radar. Seems like his style of pitcher needs to bring the heat.

by ol Pete on May 24, 2008 8:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe not

They took an intentional approach to vary his pitches, etc. So perhaps it was a strategic decision.

Look at all of the mechanical adjustments he’s made. It sure would be nice to have another bona fide Maddux reclamation about now, eh?

He really really looks a lot like Turnbow to me

Fastball/slider with a lot of speed. Marmol has more movement but it seems like not a lot of his sliders are in the zone. If batters can not swing at those he could implode like Turnbow. That said, he threw several sliders that looked low and away and was getting the calls with them in the 8th so as long as that continues he will probably be ok.
